Hi everybody, new to this forum and was wondering if someone could provide some advice with this weird noise I am hearing with my mothers new Elantra she just picked up. When starting engine has a knocking noise, not kinding. Letting motor run for a few minutes it goes away but is concerning. I was wondering if there is an issue with the MPFI engine which i believe is new this year which replaced the GDI engine. Definitely does not sound normal to me. to me it sound slike a rode knock or hydro lifter issue. Are these engines known for this. My mother traded her 2012 civic for this with 4500 miles. She did not like the seats and dash board layout in it and we got a good deal on this car. very disappointed right now.

Thanks,
Mar

Welcome, this engine has been in Elantra since 2011 model, never had GDI. It can be a bit noisy from a cold start especially when new. You have a 100K mile warranty so don't worry about a little noise just yet. Let the car break in a bit and visit your dealer if it appears to be a real problem.

Engine startup clatter is quite normal on the Elantra. If it bothers you, try listening to another Elantra on the dealer's lot.

Only if your car sounds unique would I ask the service department to look at it. Otherwise you run the risk of some overzealous (or enterprising... remember these guys are paid to do warranty work) mechanic tearing apart your engine for no reason. Somewhere buried in this forum you'll find a story about an Elantra that underwent pointless engine repairs and wound up with real problems as a result.

@Old_Motorhead - good suggestion, but unlikely given that it's a brand-new car presumably with an OEM filter.

A number of people complain about clatter in the Elantra. Try to get ethanol-free gasoline in your car. Using 100% gasoline, my own 2013 Elantra clatters only a little bit. I wouldn't have noticed it, except for the people posting here about their noisy engine at fire-up.

Unfortunately, you have no nearby stations dispensing 100% gasoline, as shown at pure-gas.org
But carefully checking your airports & many marinas in your area, you may find 100% gasoline pumps not listed. Often airport & marina stations pumping 100% gasoline are unadvertised, behind buildings or on fuel docks, where you may have to carry gasoline containers. It is inconvenient, but 100% gasoline has numerous advantages & well worth inconvenience. If you do find unlisted pumps & find out that 100% gasoline works well in your vehicle, please list your detailed findings on pure-gas.org

Hi everybody, new to this forum...
:00000732: If it's a "ticking" sound and not severe, I agree with the others that you should probably ride it out. My Elantra actually ran rougher overall during its break-in period than it did after broken in. Give it some time to see if it will either self-resolve or worsen.

The startup noise has nothing to do with using 100% gasoline. Your comments about gasoline are really getting annoying because you just repeat the same thing over and over again.
:amen:

I think Andrew already got onto this...

Did I miss something? Why did he get banned? Litesong and EasyRider gave a lot of informative advice.

Anyway. I was paranoid about startup clatter. Then I heard other people had the same experience and my anxiety disappeared. My next oil change I will use 5w30 to see if it goes away.

Litesong's on a temp ban, as myself and Andrew have asked him repeatedly to not insert his 100% gasoline rhetoric into every single thread, and he had a blatant disregard for our requests.

Likewise, Easy Rider had a lot of advice, but occasionally rude delivery, a blatant unwillingness to back down to arguments, accept requests to be kinder to other members from we mods, etc. He argued publicly and privately with myself, other mods, and members. It was an accumulation of smaller offenses across the entirety of the forum.

Any further discussion of this subject should be directed at myself or Andrew via PM. I will delete any further posts on this topic, as it has been repeatedly exhausted across all of the other threads which I moderate (Easy Rider was EVERYWHERE).

My 2013 Elantra GT recently developed this annoying sound when started cold. It sounds like tapping valves.
The noise gradually disappears when engine gets up to normal temperature.
I always get oil changed at the Hyundai dealership.
Is it possible that there is something wrong with Variable Valve Timing system?
I had state inspection done few days ago and I mentioned this to the service manager but the engine was hot during inspection and they could not hear anything. I might have to leave it over night so they can start it cold and listen to that noise.

Thank you for your feedback. The noise in my Elantra stays longer then 1 minute. Actually about 10 minutes. Maybe the difference in temperatures between FL and PA has something to do with this?
What bothers me is why this has started just recently? For almost two years everything was fine.
I wish colnago gave us some up date. There is someone on you tube showing exactly the same problem in his 2012 Elantra. Is it OK to post here links to other web sites?

Here is an update on my Elantra. Left car at the dealership over night. Next day they called me and let me know that I needed new engine. It was a rod knock!?!
So two days ago i got my wheels back.
Yesterday the engine light came on.
Back to the dealer where the lose plug was secured.
Today engine light came on again so tomorrow, guess what.....
back to the dealer.

Are you referring to your 2013 Elantra GT? If so you are posting on the wrong forum, can you start a new thread on the Elantra GT forum? You replied to an old thread, you will probably get more replies if you start a new one. Sorry you are having problems with your car, glad Hyundai gave you a new engine under warranty :) Hope the problems with check engine light are minor.

My 2013 does the same thing. It stated about 3 months after owning her, took it in for her first service with Hyundai and they asked to have her overnight to check. They said, they could hear the tapping noise on cold start ups, but after 3 minutes of idle and sitting there she stopped. The mechanic stated, if it's a major problem you would hear it all the time, hot or cold and the more you revved the motor, the louder she would get.
He said, don't worry about it and happy motoring.
