Hi all!

So I've pretty much decided I'm going to just do a drain and fill myself on my 2007 Sonata. My friend who has a 2004 Santa Fe did his, and he told me the ATF was quite expensive. I started calling around, and I thought the results were quite interesting, and figured I would share.

Within about 30 miles of me...
Hyundai - $10.09/quart (most expensive quote)
Kia - $6.39/quart (least expensive quote)

Hyundai and Kia ATF are the same. The cheapest I found Hyundai ATF $7.02/quart (290 miles from my house, and obviously the cost of driving there would not outweigh the $10.09/quart. The cheapest I found Kia ATF was $6.39/quart (this was at three different Kia dealers). The most expensive Kia ATF SP-III was $8.05/quart.

What are you guys paying per quart? I would like to know.

Very interesting that the prices vary so much between Hyundai and Kia and location.

I would use the Castrol Import Multi–Vehicle fluid. Its around $6-7 a quart. People say its better than the stock stuff, you can search through these forums about it.
Yes. People here (me included) have been witnessing an improvement in the quality of shifting after switching to that Castrol product. It's not like night-n-day, since the Sonata's shifting has not been bad in general, but those occasional hiccups (especially when driving a little more aggressively) have vanished, at least in my case.

Hi ya'll again!

I didn't really want to start a debate on what types of fluid to use. There are too many of them on here! Yeah, I understand there are alternatives. I haven't decided what exactly I am going to do. I just think it is quite odd the different prices from Hyundai to Kia. If there was a Mitsubishi dealer in the area, I would have called them too.

@Hyscott - Your just jealous you didn't go on the cruise with me and that you have no pennies to pinch.

BTW everyone, Hyscott is my friend who I'm always referring to who drives the 2004 Santa Fe.

I paid about $8/qt at the Kia dealer. Until I discovered the Castrol Import fluid, now I pay around $6. :)
Oh no Castrol. :innocent: I would feel very funny doing a drain & fill using 5.2 quarts of Castrol, mixed with 7 quarts old OEM fluid,
but that's just me. Hyundai SPF 3 is selling for around $9 now. Mitsubishi seems to be about $7

Really nothing wrong with and actually my car feels and shifts a lot smoother then it did but to each his own just wanted to put my two cents in since castrol is cheaper and a approved fluid for our trannys

The difference in cost is because we "upscale" Hyundai owners have more disposable income than the "lowly" KIA owners.

Yes V you are right and even my Dealer uses it, but unless you do a true flush I do not see the benefit in the mixture. I even read

somewhere it whips up foam. Hey Snow or killer Ice for Barstow/Victorville tonight! :57:

I have two Hyundai dealers in my area. I've never checked with any Kia dealers. Anyway, one Hyundai dealer quoted me $6.50 per quart for Hyundai SP-III. Another quoted $11.85 or something like that (I wrote about this in another thread...). The second dealer was much closer to me, so I told the parts guy about the other price, and he went down to $6.37 per quart. Yes, they have some uh, "discretion" in their pricing. The parts guy--at this dealership at least--makes commission on sales. But in any case, I pay $6.37 per quart.

Do you know why I see a double 'Edited By' in all your posts? Different

I use the castrol last time I did a "pan drain". To me, best of both worlds, alittle Castrol, alittle OEM. Last time I bought SP lll at the dealer it was just over $7 a quart. I sure wish I had a filter to change though, Thats what bothers me the most.

When I did my fluid "change", I was idiotic about it. I simply did a drain and fill, but I did it twice, driving a bit between changes. So my fluid is now about 75% new. I should have disconnected the ATF cooler line and done it the right way. When you drain, you get 4 to 4.5 quarts (out of 8.5).

There is a filter, but it is internal. The only way to get at it is to tear the transmission apart.

After recently joining I did some research on this topic and some others so I opted to get the Hyundai SPIII fluid but I didn't want to get hosed in the process. Thanks for all the great threads and posts!! I called the dealer in my neighborhood in Staten Island and he wanted almost $9 a quart. I decided to call the dealership I bought my 08 Sonata from in NJ. They quoted me $6.60 a quart. I went there today and decided to ask for a case since my brother has a 06 Santa Fe as well. The person in the parts department gave me a discount since I took a whole case and charged me $5.99 a quart. Couple that with lower sales tax and I actually got a deal in comparison.
