I've had the same problem come up in my week old SE. Took it into the dealership and they are going to replace the entire housing. Had to order it in though, because they didn't have any other Sonatas with sunroof to pilfer from. Oh well, it's not that big of a deal...just taped it closed for now. :)

When I test drove the new Sonata at the dealership last week, the sunglass holder came down when I put the car in park & turned it off. At first I thought, "well, that's convenient". lol. But not so much if it's constantly coming down or not staying shut. Seems to be a common issue.

I think I may have a quick and dirty solution to this problem. On the right side of the housing is a pivoting plastic piece, containing a short pin. The pin is meant to engage a system of tracks in the right side of the sunglass holder. In my case, the pin is too short and does not fully engage the tracks. Hence, the holder sometimes latches loosely in the closed position and most times will not stay closed at all.
I inserted two thicknesses of a piece of a playing card between the plastic pivoting piece and the housing. This acts as a shim and moves the plastic piece and the pin away from the housing and closer to the tracks. This instantly solved the problem since the pin is now fully engaging the tracks. My "fix" has been in place for two weeks with no problems.
Give it a try. You may need more or less shim thickness, so a little experimenting might be in order.
Good luck.

Great idea! We should call this the "Ace of Spades" fix! :)

Thanks to Joe N for the quick fix. I pulled mine out in about 2 seconds. I also went to my dealer 3 weeks ago and they told me they had to order parts. I just got off the phone with them and was told that there are no parts available as this is apparently a nationwide problem with the 2011 Sonata. My service dept told me that the problem is the pin in the swing arm is too short. He pulled the pin out some more and he is hoping that fixed the problem with one of the sales reps cars. He said Hyundai is trying to come up with some sort of "fix" that does NOT involve replacing parts.
We shall see!

You should try the Ace of Spades fix mentioned above!

Well, I think my dealer may be bonkers. The pin in the swing arm does NOT pull out. I yanked on that thing but it does not move at all. I am sure it is just molded into the arm and there is nothing you can do to change the length. I did use the Ace of Spades fix and put it back together (minus the spring) and that seemed to work.

Bump. Has anyone gotten a replacement sunglasses holder from Hyundai? My dealer hasn't said a word about it, had the car 3 months now and still can't use the sunglasses holder b/c I have to keep something wedged up in there to keep it closed.

My 2011 Sonata is having the same problem. It hasn't been happening too much since the outside tempature has started to cool down with summer coming to an end. It's a bit of a disappointment that Hyundai doesn't seem too interested in fixing this issue, as it seems like quite a few people have had the same problem. We've also had some problem with the i-pod interface. When trying to use the touchscreen to scroll through the different artists on the i-pod, everything seems to freeze up. It doesn't have the same problem if you just use the aux jack, but then you can't use the stereo to control the i-pod. I guess what you get with going with a cheaper car. I doubt that a Lexus would have the same problems. Does anyone have pictures of the "ace of spaces" fix?

Has any one gotten theirs replaced yet. I brought this up to my dealer two months ago and the part still hasn't come in yet. Supposedly their coming in from Korea. It's not the best thing thats its taking so long, but in the grand scheme of things, this is peanuts. I would rather have an issue with you sun glasses that have a power train issue

those of you who have used the 'ace of spades' quik-fix, what kind of cards did you use and if you have one...a link would be nice!! :whistling:

when in this morning... didn't end well. They were going to replace the whole head unit in the head liner, but they ordered the wrong part. The part they ordered was for a GL(no sunroof). I have a GLS (sunroof), So now i have to wait for them to find the right part again and have it shipped to me dealer. The service manager was just as **** off as i was, so hopefully it gets resolved quickly
