Shiftronic Problem

Today my shiftronic died on me. The car has almost 80k. In auto it works fine. When I put it in shiftronic mode - sometimes the display changes from D to blank, sometimes to D1, sometimes to 1.
No matter what it displays it still keeps working as if it's in Auto. Shifting up or down does absolutely nothing. Other then that everything looks ok. No CEL, no warning lights, drives normally.

Any ideas?

Strange problem... I think it is transmission selector range problem (or the equivalent in Hyundai because that is the name in Chrysler/Mercedes ). Keep in mind that shiftronic is not the advanced and fast DSG system (VW, AUDI) with double clutch so that even in manual mode the computer changes the gears just you tell to the computer when to do so. It is kind of semi automatic.

Should be covered by car maker!

Both Hyundai's shiftronic and VW-Audi DSG's gear shifting mechanisms are computer-controlled, although DSG does it a lot faster. No more real manual shifting (clutch pedal may be soon a thing of the past).

Saga continues...

This morning it worked fine, and died again in the evening. Was really wierd. So I started playing with all the switches and found that the moment I have ANY external lights on - shiftronic is screwed. And I mean - ANY LIGHTS. Whether it's just parking lights, headlights with or without fogs or auto when it's dark. So the only lights that work in any of these situations are the interior lighting, rear lights, and front parking lights. Looks like this is some sort of electrical glitch that screws up everything. Now, how do I find it?
The only 2 things that are not original on the car are - fog light bulbs are 37 watt instead of 27 watt, and couple months ago I had some rear light or brake light relay or something replaced under the recall. Plus, I have the radar detector and GPS hardwired to the fuse box, but both devices always work no matter how the lights are, so I think they're not related.
Remote starter is installed since the day I got the car, and I think it's probably unrelated.
Also, recently I burned a lighter fuse and simply replaced it with the fuse that was labeled as SPARE. I hope it really was spare, but that also was about a month ago and I used shiftronic since and it was fine. That's probably not the cause then.

What is?

BTW, I just reset the computer. Disconnected the negative for couple minutes - Odometer is reset, so I guess everything else too. Did absolutely nothing to the problem.

It's probably the shiftronic switch is bad, although adding non OEM fog lights can do weird things to the electrical system. The only way to test the shiftronic is to have a dealer hook up the Hi-Scan Pro tool. You should be under warranty, let the dealer fix it.
Went to the dealer. This is exactly what they said. We'll see how it works when I get the part next week. This part is not under powertrain warranty. $200 damage.

Meanwhile this stupid thing is working fine again, so I have no idea how they diagnosed it.

Yes, trip meter.. my mistake. I'd love to reset the odometer :)

No. And the fogs are original, just the bulbs are higher wattage so they would never notice it unless they actually take them out and look.

I guess this part is simply not covered like other 1000000 parts that are not covered by the powertrain warranty. They actually are going to replace the wheel bearings too and those are covered, so life is not as miserable as it could be :)

For the shifter - I have my doubts, but I decided to trust them and give it a shot. And I'm going to monitor it until the part arrives. If it keeps working fine I might just keep the old one and have them send it back. I still hope it could be just a temporary glitch or water that got somewhere it wasn't supposed to. We had some ugly weather in the last couple days and I'm using my garage for construction needs, so the car was parked outside.

due to broken plastic piece guide

For future issues refered here....

This broken plastic piece guide (on the speed lever bar) in front of the shiftronic central switch, is a common failure also in Hyundai Tucson 2005-2009 (weak plastic guide do not resist more than 5 years usage and get broken by it self)... so the Shiftronic stop working and the main switch get bended backwards, because of the down shift movements... you need to replace the speed lever bar and set the switch again straight forward in the correct position.
