Why bother if it's free? Just take it in. All of them should still be under warranty until at least 2026. Also, my front passenger door was not the same problem with streched cable. I took mine apart and the lock is made from stamped and folded sheet metal. It's a very poor quality part. My entire door lock had to be replaced. I can swap it out in less than an hour start to finish.
This isnt the case for all vehicles as my 2017 elantra turned out to be (i verified that there is no warranty for it via the VIN through hyundai). I do have to say though that I can only speak for my vehicle when it is no longer an active thing, and I cannot say what other vehicles should have. I agree with gggplaya in that if the dealer will do it...take it to them. If not, I found a very, very useful video about getting the inner door panel off without being able to open the door. I highly suggest it since the concept is all the same with the door open or closed and he will walk you through, very meticulously, everything you need to do for the whole fix.

The warranty coverage for the door latch has been extended to 10 years (unlimited mileage) from the date of original retail delivery or date of first use, whichever occurs first, and is valid for original and subsequent owners. HERE IS THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN FOR IT FROM HYUNDAI HOPE THIS HELPS DATED FROM MAY 2021
I am in the UK and have this problem with my drivers side rear door. Em local dealer and Hyundai customer service all denied knowledge of any known issue. Emailed this .to the local dealer and now they are taking it in for free and if it is this issue it will be fixed. Huge thanks for posting.

Had this same problem on the rear passenger door, couldn't open it at all from inside or outside, which is a huge safety issue since I have a car seat. Dealer replaced locking mechanism under warranty and has worked since, however, now my driver side passenger door is doing the same thing. Seems like there is a problem, this shouldn't even be something that is happening.
I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra Limited that is doing the same thing. One dollar d it, now both are. Can not get in it from outside, can not get out when inside.

EDIT - THEY WENT BACK ON THEIR WORD AND SAID NOT COVERED IN UK!

That's really messed up to deny knowledge of it. It's a huge known issue globally and so much so that it's repaired for free in the U.S. for 10 years from the purchase date. I had 2 doors fail on my car, both replaced free.

It's not like borders between countries changed the design of these terrible door locks.

Not covered in Ireland either. 😡
I had my rear door lock with child lock on. Some pain to get it open.
Managed to get the door card off without wrecking it.
Then had to drill the lock actuator to get the door open. Replacing lock actuator was then simple job.

My friend’s did fail within warranty. They took it in and the dealership denied that it was broken and they even showed them the problem. This is definitely a QC issue and Hyundai is being shady about the entire thing.

I’ve just got a quote to fix 2 doors that require new Actuators - $1554.00! It’s a 2016 Tucson. **** dangerous considering I have my grandchildren in the car most days! I’m sure Hyundai know about this problem. Just another way to screw us out of more $$$!
Not impressed!!!!

They have loads of YouTube videos on how to fix this issue. It seems like a hard long job, but I don’t think it’s as bad as what the cost for a mechanic shop to fix it. It’s worth the time and cheaper doing it yourself.

I have a 2018 Santa Fe. My passenger door won’t open. I put my daughter in her car seat and drive 15 minutes down the roads and was no longer able to open the door. This is a safety risk. I called to try and get a recall started. Mimi told me I was only person to call and report this issue. This is clearly not just a me problem. So call 1800-633-5151 to call and report so they will do a recall for this insane safety issue. They don’t want to own up and fix their unsafe malfunctioning door.

Hi mate having the same issue in dublin. How did you get the trim off without damaging it. Thanks

Hey guys! The door lock operates, I can hear it click and I can see it move but the door does not release. I've tried using the inside door handle to open it - still no good. Has anyone heard of this?

I've tried pushing, pulling, using the remote to open/close, use the manual lock to open/close - nothing is working. The inside handle feels like it is not connected at all. The outside handle feels like it is trying to function.

The dealer is planning to cut the door handles off both inside and outside of the car to try to figure it out and my appointment is scheduled for next Thursday. :frown:
I had the same problem. Door actuator in Santa Fe (and most Hyundais) are prone to breaking due to plastic parts. Door would not open from inside or outside handles. I could hear it locking and unlocking but wouldn't open. I had to take off the door card with door closed by removing screws then popping it out. Top two screws were inaccessible so I pushed it up while a mate levered with a screw driver from the top and luckily it pulled through the screw without any damage. Once door card was removed I could take of the aluminium plate and reach through to disconnect the cables. As soon as I disconnected one of the cables from the handle mechanism (of course the last one I tried) and pulled it the door opened. Replaced the actuator and all was fine.
Hope this helps people in same situation.

I have had four door actuators replaced:

  • Driver side front door under the factory warranty
  • Driver side front door under the extended warranty
  • Passenger side front door out of pocket
  • Passenger side rear door under the TSB that when I asked about it at the dealer, they denied that it existed. But since I am friends with Google, I found it later.

I had both rear passenger doors replaced under warranty. I found the tsb for it too!
