Parking lights not working

Hi,

I have a 2012 ix20. I am based in Ireland.

Yesterday I discovered both front parking lights are not working. The bulbs are fine as I switched them with the headlight (they are the same type) and they worked fine.

So then I thought it must be a fuse gone. But the manual does not mention the parking lights in the description of all the fuses. So now I am not sure how to fix it without going to the garage.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks

All the fuses can be checked with a test light.
Turn power on ... ignition on
Take test light and touch the two test points on fuse(s)
The test light should light up on both test points
If not then suspect a bad fuse

As for the parking lights being the same as headlights ... I am with Autospark ... confused by what you say.

Answers to the questions

Hi,

By parking lights I mean the middle setting of the rotating light selector - in between off and dipped headlights there is a middle position that I thought was called the parking lights, perhaps they are the "position lights"? The symbol looks like lights to the side going both left and right.

I just realised based on your questions that I was incorrectly looking at the full headlights and thinking those were the "parking lights." Sorry for the confusion.

Now I am just trying to figure out which lights are the parking lights. The switch does light two rear lights alright, but nothing at the front. Is that all they are supposed to do? If so, they in fact I don't have any problem!

Thanks for the help and replies, much appreciated.

Over here in the UK we normally call those the side lights. But it was your bulb swapping that caused the confusion. Side/parking light bulbs are totally different to the main headlamp bulbs.

I'm not familiar with the ix20 so might I suggest you take a look in the maintenance section of the owner's manual. There's a section in there showing where each bulb is and how to replace it. Any problems, post back and let us know.

The puzzle continues

Hi Scott.

Thanks for the reply. You are very good to help.

The manual describes this position on the light control lever as the "Parking light position." It says "when the light switch is in the parking light position, the tail position, license and instrument panel lights will turn on."

This seems to imply to me that it is calling parking lights what you call side-lights, correct?

In any case, this seems to also imply that the parking lights do not include switching on any lights in the front of the car. Is this the same behaviour as you normally see with side-lights?

But then later in the maintenance section it describes how to replace a "position light" at the front, which wasn't mentioned previously, but possibly refers to bulbs I spotted in the same mounting area as the full headlights but mounted just outside from the headlight bulb on each side. No matter what I do they never come on.

All very confusing. Do you happen to know what a position light is?

Hi Brian. Yes that's correct. What Hyundai call parking lights in the manual are what is generally called side/tail lights here in the UK. I think as far as the MOT test is concerned they are actually called front & rear position lamps but my fellow techs and I never call them that. We always talk about the side/tail lights.

I think you've misread the above paragraph. Does it perhaps say "the tail, position (meaning front position), license and instrument panel lights will turn on"

Maybe the bulbs are blown.

Forum discussions (threads) have a lifespan and will eventually run out of steam and 'die'. Resurrecting a 'dead' thread by posting to it (necroposting) is counter-productive and generally frowned upon by forum Moderators. It's commonplace on forums for threads that have 'died' to be automatically archived after a set period of inactivity (say 6 months or 1 year) so that their content remains visible to forum users but the thread can no longer be added to. Threads on the Hyundai forums seem to be immortal and, consequently, wide open to necroposting. I also notice that Hyundai forum users apparently can edit their own postings indefinitely, which is also unusual. I'm a Moderator on another forum that has automatic 1-year thread archiving and a just 30-minute period during which a person can edit their current posting. (As a Moderator, no time limits apply to me and I can edit all postings, not just my own.)

I think all Hyundai ix20 cars (whatever their age) had the same '2 units' rear lights, with one unit on the car's body and the other unit on the car's tailgate. There are online videos showing how to replace bulbs in the bodywork unit (which first requires removal of the unit from the body) and that looks easy enough. Based on the ix20 Owner's Manual, replacing bulbs in the tailgate-mounted unit requires more preparatory work and will be significantly fiddlier.

My 2021 Hyundai i20 had (rare) H19 halogen headlamp bulbs and the replacement procedure was a pig. Fortunately I never needed to do it...
