Oil/Oil Fliter-what do you use?

I own a 2002 Santa Fe LX V6 with 89K on the clock. For a while I've been going to the dealer for all of my oil changes,(mainly for the fact they match all the $20 oil change coupons), but now with my car out of warranty I want to move to synthetic.... But I'm a little iffy about it and I know this is the best place to get answers.
Here's what I want to know:

1) What do you Oil Brand/Weight do you use?
2) What Filter do you use?
3) Have you had any problems using the oil/filter combo?
4) What brand(s) of oil/weight/filter would you recommend for me? I know everyone has a preference (I live in Houston, drive about 1-1.5K a month, 60/40 split for driving (city/highway))

I know that Hyundai doesn't recommend (in fact, I think there is a TSB stating) that you shouldn't use aftermarket filters. I know from a prior experience that the oil has leaked due to Jiffy Lube not changing something (a gasket I assume) when they did the change. I know the benefits of synthetic, and I would love to move to 6K+ oil changes even if it cost $35 for oil/filter... but I want to do it knowing that I'm not harming my engine in anyway. Thanks for any/all input. :)

I recommend OE filters, I've had some pretty bad start up knocking with aftermarket filters. For oil just use the recommended viscosity, 5w-30 works well year round. Brand wise I pretty much just use Pennzoil, both our I4 and V6 are very quiet with Pennzoil. I do 4 month oil & filter changes regardless of mileage.
Hmm.... do you use your OE filter with Synthetic? And I think I'll go with a 5W-30, since I think that's what they use down here (from my dealer.)

The only problem I have with using the OE filter is that I feel that if I run my car say 7.5K/6 months between changes the thing will not filter after say 5K. I'm looking at either a PureOne (but they now have a synthetic filter... decisions decisions.) or a Bosch Distance Plus for the filter. The oil brand I'm still debating on.

I use Quakerstate 10w/30 full synthetic with the purolator classic oil filter from walmart and run it up to 7500 miles per change. No problems with noise on startup at all. Filter can shape and size is the same as the OE and the check valve is similar too.
A Classic eh? Hmm....

Don't worry about your filter "not filtering" after 5k miles. These engine are not dirty enough to plug a filter in that amount of time. I've run filters past 8k miles with no problem. Some vehicles even recommend changing the filter every other oil change. My old Toyota Camry recommend that, if memory serves.
You make a good point.

Too many freaking decisions. I'm now back in the same place I was when I started. :/

I guess I need to try a non-OE filter and see, I have two in mind (Bosch or PureOne). But now I'm back on not knowing what brand/weight I want. I mean, according to my owner's manual, I can use a slew of weights.... which I guess would mean she can run on just about anything. (I want to try Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy, but that is a 0W-30)

I think what I'm getting out of this is I need to suck it up and try something.... but I think I want to hear from a few more people before I do something. (Which you guys have done great so far. :) )

Customer here who request synthetic receive a Hyundai filter and Mobil-1 5/30.
Any particular reason why 5/30? I know the differences, but I am unsure of what I want to use.

I guess the best thing I can do is determine what I want to use, run for 7,500mi/6mo and ship a sample to Blackstone, they will be able to tell me if my setup "works" or not.

Based on that chart, I should use 10W-30, 10W-40, even 10W-50. (Because I do see temps of over 100 during the summer months)

But the fact this car takes 7 different grades of oil tells me one thing-It probably doesn't matter as long as I get the one in my temperature range.

Edit: The more I look at the chart the more it confuses me. I know I run on 5W-30 from Hyundai, and I have never had a problem. And a 5W is "easier" at start up than a 10W. Maybe I just give up and keep going to the dealer... But where's the fun in giving up? LOL)

Seriously?... I can hardly imagine how bored should I be to do it for a 10-years old beater.
I'm not "bored..." but this is the only thing I got. I'm 18, with a low paying job. A new car ain't in the works for me at least for the next few years. That's the ONLY reason why I would do that. But you do make a point.

Using a better grade of oil does not mean extending the drain intervals. Oil gets dirty, and contaminated by combustion by-products no matter what kind it is. I won't tell how often I change, it will start something else. I use here in Wis. 10w30 in summer, and 5w30 in winter. It still gets pretty hot here, but not like Texas. I also remove the lower engine "skid" plate and the insulated engine cover in summer. Why trap all that heat under the hood in summer. Thus endeth my opinion, and everyone knows what opinions are like
I like your method of moving the engine cover and lower "skid-plate," that actually makes some sense. But really, I'd like to hear your interval of swapping the oil, at the least it is twice a year. To be honest, I know people that still change every 3K/3Mon, no matter what they use. I get that it is all about preference. At the moment, I don't truly have any. (I go every 3,750 miles, or 3 months, because I feel I fit the "severe" category when it comes to driving.)

And I plan on using Mobil-1. Less than $30 bucks for a 5 Quart of the 10W-30 Extended Performance at Wal-Mart.

Well... I think I'm going to try this combo for my next oil change.

Mobil-1 10W-30 Extended Performance Oil
Mobil-1 M1108 Extended Performance Oil Filter

From what I have read/heard, Mobil-1 Oil is a pretty good brand (as are many of the others), and will provide the "protection" for at least 7,500+ miles. As for the oil filter, well... I really don't have an answer for that one. Thank you all for the input! (Please don't let this be the end of the thread. I'm curious as to what we all use on our aging Santa Fe's.)

So I recently headed over to Pepboys to look at all the filters. I picked up the M-108 and compared it to the Purolator ONE. The Mobil 1 is about half the size of the Purolator... and heavier too.

I think that for the price, and because I hear good things about Purolator, I'm going to use the PSL-14459.

Well. I just did my first oil change. I was about 1k early... and the oil was pitch black. :/ I know color doesn't tell the full story.

Oil: Mobil 1 Advance Protection, 5W-30
Filter: Hyundai OEM!

I worry I didn't do something right, like maybe there isn't enough oil. But I think I'm OK, the car runs just like it always does, and I still have a little left over in the 5Qt. container, so I know I didn't put TOO much. I'm paranoid I know. But the last thing I need is for something to go tragically wrong because of my simple oil change. Lesson learned for next time, have a tarp for the area.

I just did my oil change a week ago. I did 6K miles on my Mobil1EP Syn./Hyundai Filter. I couldn't be happier with Mobil 1. I'm going to go to a 7.5K OCI without any regret.
