Garlic odor

My Palisade has a garlic smell to it that won’t go away. It seems to originate in the back section of the car. I’ve parked it outside in the sunshine with all the doors and windows open for two weeks and it still won’t go away. I’m afraid to take it back to the dealership for this problem because they will probably just spray it with perfumes. Would love to get to the root of the problem.

Fold down the seats, pull up the mats, look everywhere. An old trick for removing odors is to take two dinner plates, sprinkle one with plenty of fresh ground coffee and the other with sliced apples. Leave the two plates on the back seat for a day or two with the windows only down 1/4 inch. This supposedly works.
If the dealer doesn't address this problem to your satisfaction, don't be afraid to contact Hyundai U.S. head office.
Good luck.

Other owners on other Palisade forums have figured out that it’s coming from the headrests. Take them out of the seats, put your nose up to the holes and squeeze. I think you’ll find that‘s where the smell is coming from (not the seats themselves). Some have sprayed Lysol in them to help with the smell.

Garlic odor is usually a chemical marker for Arsenic, a known carcinogen used in leather production. If I were you folks I would not be trying to mask that scent. I would also not be learning to do upholstery if I spent $50K on one of these ‘flagships’. Go to the dealer, demand a loaner and DO NOT pick it back up until the smell is gone. I know my kids or grand kids wouldn’t be riding in a vehicle that was off-gassing something like this. Good luck folks.....you’re going to need it.

I think Hyundai might be pretending. But not for long. Sooner or later quality issues catch up to automakers. Don’t pretend like you do know. Unless you work for Hyundai, which I’ve suspected. In that case I feel sorry for you and of course carry on.

I love how every time I disagree with someone, I must be working for Hyundai!

But no, I have never worked in the car industry. You may not have posted much on here, but just so others know: this guy got himself banned from another Palisade forum for this kind of negative and conspiracy-driven posts.

No conspiracy, just Hyundai not owning up to their mistakes. I love how you try to make it personal but can’t explain why Hyundai doesn’t fix all of these faults. They just keep making this vehicle with unacceptable levels of NVH, cheap windshields and smelly interiors.

How do you know they don't fix it? The wind noise threads have been quiet for weeks now. No report of that on 2021 models (yet, anyway). For 2020s, people have reported success with adjusting the doors (as in re-aligning them). Unacceptable levels of NVH, you say? I don't have that issue at all. Many people don't either. You continue to generalize and assume every Palisade is bad. This isn't true and never will be. Just because some have issues (which clearly is the case) doesn't mean all do. Until you understand that you need to stop generalizing and keep things in perspective, I'll keep calling you out on it. It's always been your problem and it's likely why you got banned from other forums. Posting conspiracy BS about arsenic and leather is certainly not helping your case.

And the smell issue has been widely reported in the media. Hyundai said they're investigating, and even specifically mentioned a TSB (see thedrive.com). And I also don't have this issue (or a broken windshield), so stop generalizing again.

They bought your car back. That's not enough for you?

Stating that Hyundai does not care about its customers is a wild exaggeration brought on by your bitterness over having bought a lemon. I own a 2012 Sonata with the infamous Theta II engine which Hyundai replaced free of charge at 118k miles. I've had multiple quality issues with that car and everything was always taken care of. Still driving the car with almost 175k miles and everything works.

You're once again exaggerating and generalizing. Talk about the issues all you want, but stop stating that they don't care and every car they make is bad. That's a lie.

LOL - proof will be in the action.

1) Cracked windshields - takes legal action to do what Kia has already done.
2) Garlic odor - takes cars.com Media-shaming Hyundai to get an actionable response to owners.
3) Wind noise - Hyundai tells owners “you’re dead to me” and stops TSB with no solution with over a years worth of disappointed owners.

No conspiracy theories needed. Hyundai is as lost as the owners who continue to support them. I hope they prove me wrong and fix all their issues.

What’s proving you wrong is all the quality surveys where they end up near or at the top. With a company of this size, there’s always going to be unhappy customers, and it’s impossible to catch every manufacturing issue. What the survey results tell you is that, by and large, they address them or don’t have them in the first place. It sucks that you got a bad one. Doesn’t mean Hyundai “is lost”. Another exaggeration. You don’t even own a Hyundai anymore. Move on. This bitterness can’t be healthy...

Actually you’ve got that wrong. Palisade was #11 out of 11 according to the JD Power owner’s survey. In fact, it was dragged down by some of the worst scores in the segment for quality and reliability.
I was talking overall, not just Palisade, since you made wildly exaggerated statements like "Hyundai is lost", or "Hyundai doesn't care about owners". Hyundai is near the top of all quality surveys in general. I told you before, nobody's denying there are issues, particularly on a first year model like the Palisade. It doesn't mean every Palisade has issues or that Hyundai doesn't care. Talk about issues all you want, but don't just make posts to bash Hyundai with those generalizing statements.

We also have a smell, seems similar to poorly tanned leather to us. We have taken this back several times to dealer and they simply tell us they do not smell it which is BS. Once we left it overnight and asked them to keep it out in the sunshine as in hot conditions it is worse. When I came the next morning to pick it up, I found our Palisade under cover, sunroof closed and windows cracked - they said they do not smell anything; was so furious, I just drove away. I need to get the contact of Hyundai USA management to file a written complaint as this is a real problem. We keep our vehicles well cleaned and generally have a “new car” smell for a couple of years, not with this Palisade! Love the other aspects of the vehicle, but this smell may mean we never purchase another one or recommend to someone else. We will simply pay a lot more for a more reliable luxury brand after trying out Hyundai.

I’m sorry you all are having to deal with this. Frankly it’s unacceptable. Hyundai loves to deny anything warranty related, they are the worst manufacturer I’ve dealt with in terms of warranty claims. Hopefully Hyundai starts making things right.
