Do You Always Use Your Fog Lights?

Yes or no. I only use mine when it's raining or when there's fog since I read in the user's manual that it can overload the smart alternator.

I used them every time I drive because my fog light is my turn signal light lol.

Same in here except that mine are not allways ON. Only blinking when turning, not used the 2nd wire.

Use foglight in Quebec w/o any 'FOG' situation is illegal here anyway. The car looks better with no fogs lighted up.

I used them all the time on my old car but my 2011 GLS has no fog lights. I like more light on the road whenever possible
I use mine all the time on all our cars. Not having fog lights is a deal breaker for me. I would never own a vehicle without foglights.

When driving in the city or other well lit areas I usually don't use my fog lights. I do sometimes use them when driving on the highway but I especially like using them when driving on country roads; they do make a difference!

As far as draining the battery, using the fog lights draws less power than the high beams. High beam = 55 watts, fog light = 27 watts. The way the lights are wired, the fog lights are automatically turned off when using the high beams so using the fog lights all the time should not be a problem, unless you have a weak battery!

Because the fog light bulbs are so finicky to replace (as I discovered with my Santa Fe after only 2 years), I use them at night only in tandem with the headlights. And mostly just because they are there... they really don't improve visibility very much except immediately in front of the car.

I Use mine All the time except in city driving. I do A LOT of highway driving - 1000 km a week on highway - and I use the Fog lights every second of that 1000 km when it is dark. It lights up directly in front yes, but also lights up the sides of the road quite well. I have (a couple times) been able to swerve away from moose on the shoulder because of the Fog Lights lighting up the shoulders for me :)

Definatly a safety feature for doing a lot of night driving.

(this is my first car with fog lights and I have yet to use them in the FOG or snow.....how much of n improvement is it?

I used them all the time on my Focus and never got arrested, I did not know it was illegal if there is no fog.

it's not the battery they talk about a bigger load to the alternator.

Yeah I like when they light up the shoulders. They are good in snow but not that good in a snowstorm.

TunedOut I agree, up north in Canada you have to watch out for moose, down here in the States we have to watch out for deer. Any advantage to see better and wider is a definite advantage!

Xion Nider you said "It's not the battery they talk about a bigger load to the alternator." Running the fog lights uses about half the power as using the high beams. If the battery and alternator can handle the high beams at 110 watts with no problem they can definitely handle the fog lights at 54 watts.

Just to mention that where I live in south easthern Quebec, we also watch out for deer and racoon and porcupine and skunk, there are lots hit by cars in my area (lots of wood) I even saw a deer in the Wal-Mart parking last year LOL but in northern regions they also have Moose, they are so big they kill people in their cars.

I agree with you for the fogs but I was just saying because it is written in the OM about adding a load to the alternator (see pic on 1st post), maybe the beams + the fogs add a bigger load to the alternator

I prefer to use my fog lights all the time for a few reasons:

1) I paid good money for them, and I think they look good
2) They do help with night-time visibility
3) It's not always about how well you can see, as much as it is about how well you can BE SEEN. 2 vehicles speeding towards each other at high speed should be as visible as possible to each other. Sometimes, even in daylight, having the full lighting system on can mean the difference between being seen and safe, and having a distracted driver plow into you.

The salesperson I bought the car from turned them on when showing me the features of the car after I bought it. He told me I could leave them on all the time and forget about it. They are useful sometimes, especially since I live on the coast.

However, they are expensive and annoying to replace, so I only use them when I need them.

Of course the sales guy wants me to use them all the time - more cash when I need to replace them haha.

They are fog lights and are only for use in such conditions. In fact in Oregon, using them without fog is considered the same is driving with your high beams on and you can be cited for it. In the year I've owned my Santa Fe, I think I've used them twice.

When I bought my first car, "fog" lights were yellow... ostensibly to penetrate fog without creating a bright white glare. And white lights were called "driving" lights, which made sense because that was when you used them most.

Frankly, I think they're all just a bunch of silly accessories whose main function is to separate young men from their money. :p

I just like to look of them on the vehicle, the four lights on the front of the car looks great, and certainly enhances the ability of other drivers to see the car. I use the full headlight system and the fogs All the time. Happy to swap out bulbs a year or two early if need be.

Don - funny you mentioned driving versus fog lights - I just received the yellow fog light bulbs from Shark Racing and will swap out the white for yellow this weekend. Always loved the distinctive yellow glow from older european sports cars (and 24 Hrs of LeMans - but I have no illusions!). I think the yellow will set apart my White Limited from all the other nice white cars out there.
