Hyundai and Apple are part of the Global Car Connectivity Consortium, which defines the specifications for Digital Key.
Apple wallet digital keys require the CCC Digital Key 2.0 spec to work. It’s also forwards compatible with Digital Key 3.0 (can use bluetooth LE and iPhone’s U1 UWB chip).
The spec that currently exists in ALL Hyundai vehicles (except for the new 2023 Palisade and Genesis GV60) is CCC Digital Key 1.0. Without a modification to either the car’s hardware and software, Apple Car Keys will not be compatible with our cars.
Also would like to point out that an “infotainment software update” is
extremely unlikely to bring support for Digital Key 2.0, the infotainment system is separate from the Digital Key system and thus one cannot update the other. This is why infotainment software updates have zero effect on our digital instrument clusters, as they are running two separate systems and only communicate via CAN.
(Apple CarKey’s first supported car manufacturer, BMW, faced the same problem as their existing cars with Digital Key 1.0 could not support Apple CarKeys, and required newer production cars with newer hardware & software to work. They provided no upgrade path for existing owners with Digital Key 1.0.)
