Digital Key for iPhone incoming?

I updated the MyHyundai app this evening for iPhone and noticed it mentions “Introducing all-new Digital Key integrated with Wallet app (for supported vehicles)”. I can’t find if the 2020 Sonata Limited will be supported, nor can I find any mention to the digital key in the Wallet or MyHyundai app.
Another note, valet mode now functions after the update and integrates with the car.

I saw that yesterday as well. I think the only way to tell is to go to your car and follow the pairing instructions for the phone. Hopefully they supported it retroactively to cars that originally had it. Versus only supporting it for new models being delivered as a marketing gimmick to get you to buy a newer car. The later is just plain wrong!

Hyundai and Apple are part of the Global Car Connectivity Consortium, which defines the specifications for Digital Key. Apple wallet digital keys require the CCC Digital Key 2.0 spec to work. It’s also forwards compatible with Digital Key 3.0 (can use bluetooth LE and iPhone’s U1 UWB chip).

The spec that currently exists in ALL Hyundai vehicles (except for the new 2023 Palisade and Genesis GV60) is CCC Digital Key 1.0. Without a modification to either the car’s hardware and software, Apple Car Keys will not be compatible with our cars.

Also would like to point out that an “infotainment software update” is extremely unlikely to bring support for Digital Key 2.0, the infotainment system is separate from the Digital Key system and thus one cannot update the other. This is why infotainment software updates have zero effect on our digital instrument clusters, as they are running two separate systems and only communicate via CAN.

(Apple CarKey’s first supported car manufacturer, BMW, faced the same problem as their existing cars with Digital Key 1.0 could not support Apple CarKeys, and required newer production cars with newer hardware & software to work. They provided no upgrade path for existing owners with Digital Key 1.0.)

I’m interested where requiring DK 2.0 is required for Apple CarKeys. According to the video, the system can primarily use NFC. DK 1.0 supports that. 1.0 also supports the implementation of a “Secure Enclave” as Apple refers to it — the CCC talks about DK 1.0 allowing the use of a hardware secure element.

Of course previous cars wouldn’t be compatible with UWB, but it appears that DK 1.0 supports hardware based security environments. This is taken directly from the DK 1.0 white page: “we assume a hardware based trusted execution environment”. It appears that 2.0 REQUIRES it, instead of assuming it. Now this is just security, if there are any other concerns please correct me — I love learning about all of this.

Really wouldn’t make sense for iPhone to not support this, especially as it was stated that Apple unlocked NFC for Hyundai digital key use. That’s all that is needed, which is why it was never a concern with the unrestricted NFC of android phones. Hyundai’s digital key specifically only needs NFC with current cars supporting it. While the digital key standard may be older, there’s really no reason to just not allow it to work. May be a marketing move by Hyundai at the end of 2020+ sonatas do not get it.
