Listen to this short video, and let me know what you think. The sound is only there when the engine is under any load. If I am very careful I can raise through the RPM without the noise, but give it a little bit more gas and there it is. It sounds kind of like an exhaust leak, but I'm not sure.

Listen closely right at 0:12-0:15. That is me accelerating for 3 seconds, and that sound like a rain stick is my engine.

I should mention it's much worse when the engine is cold. In the morning, the engine also has some lifter tap and some random pings and clings during idle, but they go away after driving a couple minutes. But then sometimes if it's a really warm day (65+) and I've driven a few miles, the acceleration sound will nearly disappear. Not very often, but I noticed the other day it was much less audible.

Sucks though, I made the drive once to be told my appointment didn't get put in the books, then again just to be told they don't hear anything. The Nissan dealership is 100 miles round trip, and so made that drive too for the same "can't hear it" answer. I'm already only getting 23-26 on the hwy, and 17-19 in town. 250 mile average per tank. Costs me a lot to drive back and forth like this.

And by the way, I know forums won't fix my issues, but they are here so we can discuss, ponder and share, correct? I give my 2 cents to everything I can here on the forum, given I'm no mechanic so I don't know a whole lot, but I share what knowledge I do have. For instance, maybe these are normal sounds for this car and I really am just hearing normal function. I really don't think this is the case here, however other GT owner's input can help eliminate this question and give other input.

Car goes in on the 20th. They are going to look for the upper RPM shift chirp, the acceleration noise from the video's, listen for my lifter tap/other pings and clings, try to diagnose an odd sound when heater or A/C is on (hollow metallic ringing), try to figure out why I am getting such sub-par mileage, and do routine maintenance which is due anyways. Makes me regret buying this car so much, can't believe a dealership can even sell a car in this condition and tell me it scored "87 out of 80 points" on their inspection, making it "better than perfect" as they put it.

All this along with mismatch tires, major damage to the inside of the door panel (like the seatbelt was slammed in the door repeatedly), missing rear headrests, and scratches to the paint in several places around the car (about 2 dozen total scratches ranging from 1cm to 6 inches). I didn't notice these things till the next day of course..

^^ I feel your pain with all the issues .... and the dealer being so far away.

I am surrounded by 8 or 9 Hyundai dealers within a 45 minute drive... and even more under an hour away... yet the closest is 25 minutes away... lol

has the dealer shown and interest in seeing your video?

I don't think your age will make any difference to the dealer, they will do their best to fix your car. Give them as much detailed, specific info as possible to help them in troubleshooting. Use your OBD2 scanner and check for pending error codes (such as O2 sensor or camshaft position sensor). Also, make sure you know exactly what you are paying for in the scheduled maintenance. You don't want to pay the dealer $80 (or whatever they charge) to replace your cabin air filter :). Good luck! Sorry your Elantra GT is a lemon. (just for the record, for guests reading this thread, I am really happy with my Elantra GT, haven't had any problems, I feel good about my decision to buy it)

Can you hear the sound in my video from the original post? Does your GT sound like that? Also, I've plugged in my OBD2, no codes pending. And, I just did cabin air filter myself yesterday, had a gross old one in it. I'm just gonna let them do oil and filter basically.

I'm lucky, my GT is nice and quiet, even with the high pressure fuel injectors in the 2.0L GDI engine :) I listened to both of your YouTube clips, sorry, I don't have a clue about what is wrong with your car. I'm not that smart. Even when I have error codes to work with I usually get it wrong, AUTOSPARK shoots down most of my theories :) Anyhow, good luck, I hope you get a great technician like sbr711 or AUTOSPARK who can perform some good diagnostics and fix the weird noises and low mpg problem on your car!

Hope I can get it fixed.. I was hoping one of the senior members on here would see this, and may be able to give a little input. Then i could have some starting points to discuss with the dealership on a more technical level. Can you hear the noises in the videos? I have shown the video to some friends and they can't hear anything, granted I'm showing them using my phone speaker.

Boat exhaust...

Greetings, That's a very odd sound. To me it sounds like one of the old style speed boats with the inboard motor gurgling and exhausting into the water! Sorry I'm not to be of greater help with your situation. :frown:

Please let us know what you find out and good luck!

The sounds seem to be very bad some days. I hope I'm not gonna blow her up l soon. Also I feel like I'm doing damage to the engine with the way the sounds are, and I've been driving it like this for over a month. I'm gonna be very pissed when they replace a small part, but damage has already been done to internal components of the engine.

Just think, you buy a car with 25K on it. Then you find it has issues that may be causing excessive internal wear or damage. They fix the underlying issue, but the damage has been done. At 60K, when your warranty is up, your engine fails due to to the original damage done to it, and you're left with the bill. I bet this is what's going to happen. Unless however the engine doesn't make it to 60,000..

People keep trying to listen for a clear knock or bang. This is not the case, it is a consistent sound that I thought was an exhaust leak at first. Turn your speakers up and try and listen to the way the engine is running when I say I will replicate the sound, compared to before. Then with the shift video, there is clearly an odd sound when I shift. Like a blow off, or pressure releasing or air hissing. Just for a second, right as it shifts. Turn up your speakers guys! The sounds are very odd, and definitely not normal. I'm seriously about to duct tape my 500 dollar phone to the underside of my car to get a better place to record the sound.
