2011 Elantra-Rants & Raves

This post is about all the things I hate  about this car & the dealer.
Bought new in Dec. 2011. Wasn't told about the spare tire not being there, until I was ready to drive off the lot. Was charged the tire Tire Tax for the 5th tire that didn't come with the car. Wiper location is below where the defrost ducts are and I have to chisel the ice from around the wipers to get them to work. Edging between the door jam & interior panels leaves a black substance on my clothes, when brushed against when exiting the vehicle & no it does not wash out...ruined 5 pairs of work pants before I realized where I was getting it from-had to cover with duct tape. 40 MPG...what a freaking joke...the reason for my purchase of this vehicle...more like 17 -18 MPG & by the way the MPG display in not correct off by 10 MPG. While we're on the display...the miles left before the tank is empty goes blank slightly under a 1/4 tank. The hesitation upon acceleration major safety issue...I drive 40 mi to work & back on the interstate everyday...trying to pull out into a stream of traffic going 80 mph from a dead stop ....wondering when the car will decide to start moving, will I be t-boned waiting for the computer to send the command...this is my most hated issue with this vehicle. The six speed auto-trans-hate it, it can't seem to know when to shift & jumps between gears. Took it to the dealer several times & was told this is how the car works, or doesn't work if you ask me. While we're on the dealer...took it in for an oil change, waited about two hours...typical...well the mechanic forgot to tighten the pan drain plug...two hours & couldn't even do it right, I ran the car for three days to work & back when I realized I was loosing my oil everywhere. The dealer did take care of it, but would not document the issue as I requested...the scum bag. Called the dealer for a price on the new spare tire(donut) kit now offered by Hyundai $300 plus tax for a donut. Some other minor things I don't like are the sun visor being to small, the stereo speakers sound poorly, the goofy sizes of the wiper blades...the small 14" blade barely works. The door armrests are useless ...unless your obese...my arms are a good 6" from the edge of the armrest. No factory alarm system , no remote starter, no vent visors...the annoying blue light on the stereo...yes can turn it off but every time it comes back on for any adjustment. I wouldn't buy this car again if you gave me the money...worst investment I ever made...I don't know how some of you can like this car.
It does look pretty.^_^

Maybe you got a lemon?

My car seems to be powered sufficiently, I have no hesitation. My mileage averages out between 31 and 33 a tank every time. My mpg display is off by about 2 mpgs at most, sometimes less. The miles to empty goes to blanks when the estimated range drops below 30 miles(every time). I have my driver seat all the way back and do not rub the door trim when I enter or exit the vehicle(no stains on my pants). The transmission is pretty great in my opinion. The armrests are adequate I suppose, maybe i'm obese though.

Mine has a factory alarm. Remote start can be added if it's important to you(nothing is free).

Your issues with your dealer sound bad...i'd switch dealers. I agree the spare tire thing is a bummer...people on here have offered several cheap remedies for it and I spent about 100 bucks to add the kit to my own car.

On the bright side, your car should have a fairly good resale/trade in value if that helps you any?

I have the exact opposite opinion that you have...best car I've ever owned.

I second that... lol, and as far as the armrest thing goes, I am 5'8" 140 lbs (that means I'm a little guy) and I use the arm rest on the door all the time, it's almost perfect for me. Also, I have the sliding center console armrest which I also use a lot... I wonder if the original poster even looked at one of these cars before buying one? Lol, I mean, a lot of the things he complained about should have been pretty obvious upon first looking the car over...

And the mileage problem? Well, judging by the angry ranting in the original post, I'd say he has a lead foot :p

Nobody here is going to convince you to like your car but the good news is that Elantra is in demand with excellent resale value so you will take a very minimal loss if you trade it in.

Also did you test drive the car before buying?

YES! did you test drive the car? you should have seen those things during a test drive, I test drove the Elantra twice before buying it and I LOVE it. my dad always says ''the perfect car doesn't exist''

Very Happy

Totally love this little car, worst I ever got was 28.7 mpg city only driving. I would only trade for a turbo version. Highway passing is a little slow, but what can you expect from a little 4 cylinder.

I have the GLS with the 145 hp-PZEV engine, which was assembled in Alabama. I wonder if this has something to do with mileage and quality issues???

Alabama was the birthplace for mine, as well. She was even born on a FRIDAY!!! And we all have heard the rants on vehicles built on Mondays or Fridays.

I have enjoyed my Elantra immensely and would buy it again in a New York nano-second. Actually, wish I had 7, different colors...one for every day of the week!

You need to get that oil mistake by the dealer documented. I would contact Hyundai direct.

I would agree there are some annoying things and the 40MPG is a myth for most people. Above all else, if you can, find another dealer and be sure to give the original dealer 0 ratings on the survey.

The miles to empty will go blank when the last bar on the fuel gauge goes away. From there you probably have about a gallon.

If you need to accelerate fast be sure the ECO mode is off and you could also use the manual shift.

Good rule of thumb. Always check under the car the next day after an oil change.

That's a great idea. I change my oil/filters but check underneath hood and chasis after initial start-up. Probably should "recheck" my work next day.

It's a terrible shame when an owner goes in for a "professional" oil change and has to worry if it was done correctly.

Is that an American thing? You guys don't get spare tires with your car? I never actually checked until I saw a thread on here stating they don't come with them. I went and checked and mine did come with one...

Apparently, Americans are wimpy and can't change their own tires. I'm just lucky that I wouldn't be too far from towing service, as my Elantra is not going to be some backwoods vehicle anytime soon.

To the OP: So many issues you should have noticed upon your test drive. Also, so many things you point out that seem obvious (no vent visors, really?). Get real. Most companies after hearing your expectations would likely prefer you didn't purchase a vehicle from them. There are plenty of Mercedes dealerships to meet your requirements though, I'm sure.

OT but talking americans: Tim Hortons is going bigger across Canada. American customers are shocked by how small Canadian sizes are, which is why this change is necessary. It is rather interesting that our proud Canadian brand is changing its sizes to appease their small percentage of American clients. Naturally, they are now setting their sights on American markets, and American consumers like the value found in bigger servings. That Canadians are following the same trend may be good for business, but not necessarily good for waistlines.

Thanks for your posts... from the angry lead foot... yes I drove one for a test drive...I expected more from a NEW car. I've only owned other folks junk in the past 30 years of my life. I'm glad you all love your cars...I wish I could love mine too.

Personnally? I LIKE it. Wouldn't take too much forward-thinking to incorporate stylish side mirrors, or cameras (which may be the case, here) for side viewing. Front end view looks like a black panther crouched down ready to strike some unsuspecting prey. Can they manufacture it within reasonable costs so that it hits dealers' showrooms with a window sticker that appeals to the masses?

no disrespect, but this post makes me laugh. it reminds me of people who deem the sun is shining too bright with their cloudy tinted shades on.

all cars have pros and cons, to me it seems the dealer experience has tainted you overall opinion of the car. when you say your only getting 17-18 MPG im wondering how your driving. i drive my car pretty aggressively, i normally get around 24-28 mostly city driving. on the highway i can easily get over 40 if i try. the worst tank i ever got was 22.

Except some things that you simply missed (that is your fault, nobody's else) during test drive, or you just did not do homework - extensive reading before making decision, you simply can't drive efficiently.

How one can expect 40 MPH doing 80 MPH? Only a complete ignorant. Drive 65 and you will get better numbers.
Besides, this is 1.8 engine, not 3.5... it is LESS powerful, so do not wait for clouds of smoke when taking off.

Say again, how can you get t-boned while accelerating on highway?

Oil change - well, nothing to say here. Mistake, bad dealer... There are dozens of them.

All the bells and whistles you are asking? Didn't you know that before hand? The specs say it. All clear. Cars are sitting in the dealer - check whatever you like.
Spare wheel? C'mon - reading again.

I do NOT trust dealers. I do not trust anyone. All information is provided to me I verify. Even here, if you tell me something will work, I do verify.

So, stop complaining and either sell the car and get what you like - I guess 50% more expensive and half length of warranty or it is time to start liking what you have.

I don't understand your complaints. I've never had issues with fuel economy, I have no problems getting to 80mph, I've raced my brothers 2012 Mazda 3 and kept up just fine. The car is equipped with a factory alarm system, in Canada there's even a chip in the key, I have the spare tire and all that. What's so bad about the factory speakers? At the end of the day, it's a small car, not a full size luxury car.

It is in Canada...

It is 15k USD car... not 45k.

I think I may lock this thread as the OP was clearly trolling for attention and hasn't been seen since starting this thread.
He/she was here once since then.
