Hey everyone, can somebody explain me something. I'm a fresh owner of 2009 Sonata 4cyl. and this was my first oil change i did on that car.
Now, the previous oil change was done by the dealer at NAPA, and the oil level was at FULL mark right before i drained it, so it wasn't overfilled. I drained (let it drain about 45 minutes to get every drop out) it into a completely empty oil change pan after which i poured it into an empty 5qt. old oil canister, and it filled it almost to the neck.
After all that was done and it was time to pour the new oil in, i had to pour about 4.8 Liters/5.1 quarts to bring it to the FULL mark. Now, that is all consistent with the amount i drained, but the manual says that with oil filter this engine needs 4.5 gts. for drain and refill. So, what's up with that?
I then logged into HMAservice site to see what capacities that would give me. And sure enough, that too said that a drain and refill with filter takes 4.5gts., but it also showed that TOTAL for my car is 5.49gts. What does that mean exactly? A total capacity of the engine when it's brand new, or something, with no oil ever having been inside the engine before? Does that mean that with regular drain and refill a almost whole quart of old oil is left inside the engine?
With all the previous cars i've had, the amount that has been listed in the manual has been sufficient to bring it to the FULL mark, but with 4cyl. Sonata that doesn't seem to be the case. And why doesn't the vehicle's glove compartment owner's manual say anything about the Total oil capacity, but Hyundai's service site does? Could it be that it's only meant for mechanics in case they need to put a new engine on a car, or pull it apart, etc.?
Can anyone enlighten me on this, and what are your experiences with your cars when doing your own oil changes.
