Uneven tire wear??

A few days ago I took off my snow tires and I noticed that the outside of my back tires were significantly more worn than the inside of the tire. When I looked at my summer tires they were worn the same way. I took the car to the dealership today and they said that I would have to pay for the alignment!! I have 20,000 miles on the car and I really think this should be covered, after all it takes a while for this type of problem to show up. I'm ready to get rid of this car all together. Any suggestions?

I think there is an issue. I have the same problem. Fortunately (I hope) I have an old service slip (from the dealer) indicating a rear tire issue during an oil change/tire rotation service at 8032 miles.
Now at about 17.5k (changing from snow to summer tires) my tire guys are telling me to talk to the service manager at the dealer because of an alignment issue.

Don't get rid of the car over something so minor... it can happen to any car, and isn't a big deal. Just get the alignment done, or at the very least rotate the tires more often to even things out. I must confess that I have never done an alignment on a newer car; I just rotate the tires often enough that any minor misalignment will never be noticed.

It's very possible to have a car go out of alignment in 20k miles. No reason to dump a car because it needs an adjustmnet. I had a New car once that needed two alignments in the first 30k miles.... both of which I paid for. Not fun, but sometimes it happens.

thanks for the advice

Thanks for all of the input on this matter from everyone. I guess I was just a little frustrated because I did not think I had to watch the tires on a brand new car. I only noticed it when I changed my snow tires and went to put the summer tires back on. I could not believe the back tires had so much wear on the outside of them. I'm going to get the alignment done in the morning. Overall it has been a good car for me, VERY nice to drive. Thanks, again.

P.S. I guess the moral of the story is CHECK YOUR TIRE WEAR!!!!

When we buy a new car, we sometimes think we're in the clear in routine issues like watching/rotating the tires, air pressures, fluid levels, proper oil changes, etc.

There's a shared responsibility in ownership. I check my tires weekly, rotate my tires every 4,000 miles, and perform visual checks weekly on all fluid levels (including washer fluid).

Anything out of the routine or normal will begin to reveal itself usually before it becomes a major problem. Rule of thumb: take good care of your car and it will take good care of you.

Rear alignment issue!!!

In short, I have had a problem with my rear tires wearing faster on the outer edge than on the inside so I took it to the dealership and they said it needed an alignment. I have 20,000 mi. on the car and have rotated the tires. I took it for an alignment this morning at a local Goodyear shop and I got some bad news. As I thought the rear alignment is OFF and the best part is there is :mad:NOTHING:mad: that can be done about it!!! The rear is a solid axle and not easily adjustable. They called two local Hyundai dealerships to see if there were shim kits available for the rear and they said that Hyundai has not made any yet. There advice was to just rotate the tires more frequently. Oh yeah, this is the second elantra they have seen this issue on and I live in a very small town.

In short take your elantra to the dealership NOW to CHECK YOUR REAR ALIGNMENT BEFORE THE 12,000 mi. or 1 year mark.

Any thoughts on how I can resolve this issue?

Rear axle on MD Elantra is stupid for the numbers present.. the total toe and cambers is beyond any reason..

You get to burn tires because Hyundai says it is spec.. had 1 with pull, set it (front to their numbers, the car was ridiculous to drive, super sensitive, look at steering wheel and it go 1 way or other.. I would not want to take a curve at any kind of speed under power with it.

Hunter gives shim value in the tool box,, but is it just to put toe in middle of the range, or straighten it out to minimal toe and camber ?? Then there is the labor to strip the parts to fit the shim, then re-measure values and see where it is..

The car I had, they wanted to loosen and shift axle.. REAL FUNNY, nothing going to change.

I'm having the same problem rear tire wear on the outside of tires and very unsafe to drive on the ice the rear wanders all over the place. I've h ad the car to 3 different alignment shops they all say its within Hyundai specs but tires are toed in too far according to all of the shops except the Hyundai shop. Hyundai told me to put snow tires on and a bag of sand in the trunk. I've driven a lot of different car on bad roads and this is by far the worst also I've never gone through tires on anything as fast as I have on this car. I rented an elantra just to see if they are all like this and that one drove great straight and true down the road. Giving up on Hyundai going back to Honda never to deal with Hyundai again.

I also recently noticed my tires on my 2012 Elantra were worn almost to the limit mark at just 26000 miles. First, I thought the original tires were probably a low quality, cheap tires. After I read the posts here, I went back and checked the wear patterns. Yes, indeed, the outer parts of the tires were worn more than the inner parts of the tires. I had my tires regularly rotated front to back. Based on posts here and other places, the culprit seems to be the rear tire alignment that cannot be adjusted. This is the kind of car problem I hate the most. The kind that has no easy solution and you most likely have to live with it. So far, my car had 7 different problems that have been corrected by the dealership on warranty. All problems, except one, were the same type of problems posted by others on this forum. I think this will be my last Hyundai.
