My friend and I both have S/Fs, 08, and 09.
When he fills his fuel tank, the range indicator reads 620kms or so.
When I fill my tank It has never gone beond 551kms.
Both are 3.3s, autos, and we are topping the tanks right up.
We are both in the same geographical area.
If the tanks are the same size, why is there a difference?
His has a few more kms on it than mine.
This item cannot be reset.

I may be wrong, but I've always thought the range value is based on your KPL. I would also assume that it's not based on the KPL reading on your trip computer, snce this can be reset, but rather an internal value that can't be reset. If the tanks on both vehicles are the same size, that would be a difference of about 4 KPL (2.5 MPG) - a fair difference, but certainly not outside the realm of possibility.

Let me interject with MPG.

First, my Santa Fe has NO clue as to what size tank it's got. I swear, it's programmed for another vehicle that has a 16 gallon tank... not 19.8.

Today, just for grins, I let it run down to the usual 35 miles before it starts showing "---" instead, and drove it another 70. I got 16.9 gallons into it - a new record for me. It had 2.9 gallons left 35 miles into "empty" territory. That also indicates that when it goes into "---" mode, there's about 4 gallons left in the tank. It's been like this for the whole 7500 miles I've owned it.

As for the "DTE", it's just as pessimistic. Coming straight off the highway for a fill (where it's been operating at max MPG), the most the DTE has ever shown me is 320 miles. My WORST average is around 20mpg, so it should show something more on the order of 19.8 x 20 = 396 miles after a fill.

One thing for sure -- I doubt I'll EVER have to worry about running out of gas in this thing.

Your friend is getting a higher range indication because he has been driving more efficiently than you. The computer divides the remaining gas in the tank by the average recent rate of consumption, so if you go for a long, gentle highway cruise at 90km/h you should get similar - if not better - range indications. It only only takes about an hour or so of revised driving style to "correct" the computer.

PS: The Santa Fe's height and weight make it especially sensitive to a heavy right foot as well as high speeds. Keep it under 100 km/h on the highway for best results, and in the city try to minimize the use of your brakes by accelerating gently and always thinking two blocks ahead. It can make a big difference.

What Don said... you must have a heavier foot... :p :)

That's why we average 16-20 L / 100 km, heh. Our city has stop signs or red lights at every block, and they are not synchronized. Just as I get in to third gear I have to stop again. Very frustrating.

Reset your current km per liter and go on a highway trip and you will see your range updated. Often when I check the current km per liter after several months of just in town driving I see 11-14 liters per 100 km but when I head out on the hwy and reset the gauge I see 8-9 liters per 100 km.
