Turning on the defrost automatically turns on the A/C
The A/C unit takes moisture out of the air and the blower passes that air over the windows and windshield
By doing that, the glass clears of fog much faster than just heating the glass.
So, it is an important function of the defrost

 

Thanks for the info, I had a feeling that was the case. It's too bad it's not left up to the owner to decide, the smell of the AC always makes my wife feel ill. Oh well, guess well look to sell this in the near future.

 

I have a 2008 Tucson and when you put it on defrost the air come on too,,but just push the air conditioning
button and the compressor shuts off?

 

I bet there is a way to defeat the default AC logic with the defrost. There is on both my Hyundais. Look in the Owners manual, usually need to cycle the recirc button a few times when in defrost mode until the AC light goes off.

As an example from my Gen Coupe manual, it is the same for the Accent but is not documented. If you disconnect the battery the system will revert back to the AC on with Defrost and needs to be reset with this procedure.

 

To turn off the AC... just press the button again. I believe it stays on if your "heat/AC" is set to Auto. But if you turn off the Auto, no air from the vents.
