Sonata Dimension System

I just bought an 012 Sonata Ltd with the Dimension sound system. The base is not very strong, despite what I set for the base level. Does this system have a sub-woofer and/or an amp?

So far, the car is great, but the sound system really disappoints me. I hope I am doing something wrong with the set up, and that the system can be set up to provide a stong base without spending a lot of money or time.

I saw a video where you can use a regular USB for the Ipod to connect to the sound system without buying the dealer's $35 cable. Is that true?

Thanks for your feedback.

I too have the dimension system on my 11 SE with navigation. I found that the bass is enough for jazz, blues, pop, rock ,etc, but lacking on very heavy bass music like house music, trance, etc. The subwoofer is only 8" IIRC, so don't expect a rumbling bass which you can get with a real subwoofer. Also, I noticed that the subwoofer will sound weak when cold and gets better after warming up.

I find it the opposite. The bass is great for dance/pop/rap, but lacking for rock/alt etc. Again, it is only a small sub, but I have the bass level set to +8 and dance/rap (especially BPM) there is too much bass. I can even see the back window vibrating through the rear-view. Keep in mind it depends on the source as well. CDs'(original) will always sound the best.. next to MP3/XM etc..

As for the ipod cable, I bought a cheap one off Ebay, works like a charm! :)

I've got an SE with Nav dimension premium audio, and i think it's a 9/10.

To get the best out of any sound system is USB and or CD. I have my bass set at +2 and it shakes my mirrors and my drivers seat, i listen to rap, hip hop and volume is always at 15+. I just love my music, IMO the tweeters are crystal clear and and sub is more than enough. And i've had subs in my other cars and i must say the Sonata has a fantastic audio system.

I've been in BMWs, Caddys, Merc, and obviously their music might actually be Discrete Surround sound but i think the Sonata has upper quality audio.

Now with FM Radio or XM and audio is blah i really hate it. I only use MP3 CDs and my USB has over 700 songs so I'm good. :)

Again i give it a 9/10

I haven't tried hip-hop and rap songs at high volume, but for jazz (Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, etc), I can confidently say that the Dimension system sounds great. I have heard my friend's MB E350 sound system and the Sonata's sound system is about equal or even better if you can EQ and set to the right setting.
For my setup, I move the sound a little bit to the back (FAD) making it sounds more balance in the middle and not too overpowering in front (I love headphones, so this probably one of the reason why I like the sound to not only focus on the front as if you were in a Live concert). For EQ, a little boost in the bass (it is good enough at 0, but I like a little bit more thump :p), drop a few notch in the mid (vocal can be overpowering for me at 0) and 1-2 notches boost on the high (I found that if not boosted, the high has not enough sparkle). It works and sounds great to me, may or may not work for the others.

I find this system to be very pleasant if you prefer a well balanced sound. If you're looking for kidney rattling BASS then you're not going to find it with this sound system. I have my EQ selected to NORMAL with the MIDS adjusted down a few notches (some vocals can be a bit harsh at higher volumes), highs and lows at center. Overall, not bad for an OEM set-up. IMHO

I wanted to start a thread where everyone put their STOCK systems/models and sound settings to see what people used. I'm a rap guy, too, and noticed when I got in my car day one how strong the bass was. It's not going to boom you in your chest like some aftermarket, but it definitely makes itself known. arruda89...what are all your sound settings?

I have Limited/nonav Dimension System, so I think we have the same one...

My current settings off the top of my head :

NAV Dimension system
Bass +6
Mids - 3
Highs + 2
Auto Volume Control On
Variable EQ Normal

FM and XM sound ok. CDs and MP3s off USB sound EXCELLENT. Clear with nice low-mid range and enough bass that at full volumes you can definitely feel a little bit.

As comparison, in my previous vehicle I had :
Alpine Head unit
Polk db6501 6.5" Component fronts
Infinity 9633CF 6x9 3 way rears
JL Audio 400/4 amplifier

I'd say that the custom system was a hair louder and a bit cleaner with sharper highs and cleaner mids, but the NAV/Dimension system hits harder with more low-mids, more overall low ranges, and frankly, a more "full" feeling sound stage across all 3 ranges.

Darn, I should have got the nav - so much easier to control. I'll take a screen shot of my no-nav settings today...is it the same system? I have the Dimension system in the Limited (which I believe is the same as the upgraded dimension in the SE w/ nav)

Some of these people's setups have the Infinty speakers, which you do not. I am willing to bet that even upgrading those speakers the difference is noticeable. For anyone used to high-end audio quality music, nothing stock is going to suffice, unfortunately. The Dimension system head unit is similar to the basic non-Dimension setup, which is crap (or at least mine was). Going to an aftermarket head unit makes a world of difference in clarity and volume; you just have to deal with crappy Metra dash kits for now.

The Infinity speakers are paper cone pieces of crap.

Replace them with aftermarkets. Thank me later.

I had a Subaru Legacy with Harman Kardon speakers and I would say that the Dimension system in my '12 Sonata SE is equal or better with most music I listen to. I tried some of the settings, but find that if I am listening to a CD, through Bluetooth (Amazon MP3, Pandora), or USB that the sound is fine on Normal mode without changing settings. That said, I will certainly try some of the suggestions. But I definitely would not change the speakers at this point with anything aftermarket.

Do you "hear" the majority of the music coming from the dash? I had my Honda for 6 years so I had 6x9's in the back and I liked hearing the vocals through out the car. It filled nicely. Now I feel like I'm straining because I only hear vocals literally coming from the dash. When I'm talking on the phone, I only hear the person from the dash. Nothing sounds like it's coming from the doors, although I know those are working because it vibrates.
