Santa Fe Reliability

I'm looking to purchase a used 2013 Santa Fe.
I'm curious to hear from owners how reliable they feel they are.
I keep hearing many reports of people blowing up the 2.0T (turbo) engines.

Do these vehicles have issues with their engines? What about transmission problems?
Any other "problem areas" that I should be aware of before buying?

Also, is it very difficult to get them to perform warranty work?
Do they look for any excuse to blame the customer and not honor the warranty?

Check out carcomplaints.com to get an idea of issues people are having problems with for that model year. It's not the end all be all, but it'll give you a rough idea of what's been happening to that model year. I have a 2015 and haven't had any problems, but I'm confident that they worked out most of the bugs by then.

Also keep in mind that the 10 year, 100,000 mile warranty is only good for the first owner. Afterwards, it drops to 5 years, 60k.

2013 Santa Fe Sport AWD with 2.4 NA, bought new at Dec 2012, currently have 41K miles.
1. Backup camera stopped working at cold temp one week after I bought it, replaced camera, problem not fixed, replaced head unit, problem fixed, so far so good.
2. Car got alignment issue at 39K miles, dealer found that front upper control arm was faulty, replaced. (We never hit anything though, just highway driving)
3. Battery leaking fluids at 25K miles, dealer replaced it for free.
4. AC stopped working after 8 hours summer highway driving, dealer upgraded the ECM of AC system and claimed it fixed, I haven't driven it that long in summer after the fix, so I can't tell if it was fixed or not.

Another small issue: Exhaust is not made of very good material, this car and my 2013 subaru legacy 3.6 went through a harsh winter in Pullman WA, santa fe's exhaust tip already rust a lot while subaru's not, I washed both cars every day in winter.

Everything else is great, I would consider it reliable.

2013 Santa Fe 2.0T AWD here. 65000KM

No problem with the engine or mechanical

Had 1 link kit replaced under warranty
The backup camera stopped working, replaced under warranty
LCD control buttons on the steering wheel stopped working intermittenly, replaced steering wheel under warranty
Windshield cracked at the bottom, no stone chip, replaced under warranty

Had some "first year model" trouble like the rocking driver seat, creaking dash, all fixed...

Overall I'm still happy, the problem is the dealer who got an awful service dept, and I'm in a small town very far so no other alternative.

All the small things fixed - rear back up camera, creaking dash, fuel gauge, rear wheel bearing all under warranty. Purchase late 2012 and took the fuel cash card instead of one time pay out so intend to keep the vehicle for quite a while. Presently have 71000kms, being in Canada we only have half the USA warranty. I use the dealer for service and warranty work and use synthetic oil every oil change. Will ask them about the transmission cable clip TSB next oil change as I just read about on this form.

I bought my 2013 in Sept. 2013 and now have 93,500miles, issues the list is short:
Turbo bearings-new turbo replaced under warranty at 36k it was noisier than a loaner I used once so I bitched they fixed

Turbo oil feed line blew causing the engine to blow all of its oil all over the undercarriage etc.-replaced under warranty at 80k probably caused at the above repair

Backup camera failed at 65k replaced at 92k partially covered under extended warranty

Constant bitches the rear suspension design causes cupping of the tires, this causes premature tire wear, which causes you to purchase 2-sets of expensive tires in 27months.

Windshield washer pump, doesn't want to run at times mostly when you really need it, dealer can't replicate the issue so no fix

Parts of driver side door handle fell off on a -10f day into the snow, this after a recall repair by dealer. Repaired on the sight by irate owner with hand tools so I could lock my f#%^^*ing car for the night and go to sleep. All this after dinner and wine.

I like the car it does its job well, gets decent mileage, goes anywhere in ice or snow

Would I buy again, I'm not sure, I came from a VW Jetta diesel wagon that nickel and dimed me in 82k and 2.3years, so I will probably try to drive this till the wheels fall off. Or til I get bored and want something else whichever comes first stay tuned

Kbdixon was correct, just having FWD did very well on the ice we encountered in central KS. Ended up helping out a spun into the ditch s10 blazer 4wd, called my buddy down the road to bring his full size silverado 4wd and i climbed down in the ditch and hooked up the tow rope to a control arm (no tow hooks). It was flat land, so didnt get to test SFS ability on much of any hills though.

I have a 2016 Santa Fe. No problems with the engine so far.

Some of the issues I've encountered with the car in the past 2 and a half years:

- AWD drive warning light kept coming on, turned out to be a corroded wiring harness and was replaced under warranty
- Front passenger side wheel bearing had to be replaced - covered under warranty
- Loud knocking noise coming from front driver side area, turned out to be faulty steering column - covered under warranty
