I own a 2019 Hyundai Tucson. I purchased the vehicle new and it now has 38,000 miles. I have never been in any sort of accident. I have completed all oil changes and services (and recalls!) on time, and have documentation to prove this. In July 2023, my car began making a rattling sound when I accelerate. It sounds like a tin can is rattling around in the engine. It mainly happens when the car is cold, and improves after a few minutes of driving. Although I have taken my car to a Hyundai dealership, where it was supposedly looked at by a "senior technician," nothing has been identified or resolved. I suspect that, based on other threads here reporting the same problem, and the plethora of similar complaints on YouTube and other forums, that Hyundai very well knows what the problem is and is refusing to fix a car under warranty.
Has anyone identified what this sound is? Has anyone had it fixed?

Hey Dog Patch Steve,

I have a 2019 Hyundai Tucson (16000 miles) and I'm experiencing the same issue. It's more prevalent at idle and when it's cold. The best way to describe it is that it sounds like my 1.6 has been upgraded to a 2-litre, but it also sounds tinny at the same time 🤷 It's coming from the back of the car, by the muffler, but I can't seem to pinpoint the exact place. It feels and sounds like it's coming from the muffler... but you know how it goes...

I spent the day under the car checking everything for leaks, and I even shook the muffler but couldn't hear anything. All I can assume is that a baffle within the muffler has somehow become compromised.

I live in the UK and had an MOT performed recently on it. I'm not sure if it's related, but during the MOT they rev up the car high and sustain it for quite a period of time to test emissions.

I've emailed the dealer, but their silence is deafening unless it's a new car inquiry.

Does the way I'm explaining it match your experience?

I am having the same problem with my 1.6 gdi 2018 plate. I have been told clutch then clutch specialist told me not clutch another garage told me catalytic converter but I have no error codes showing at all. I have lack of power also using alot of oil had head gasket checked 3 garages told me nothing wrong with it. On 55k on the clock hyundai want nothing to do with it as just out of warranty. I have watched many videos and read many forums but myself and garage are none the wiser if anyone has an answer it would be greatly appreciated as running out of garages to take it to

If its a light rattle, I bet it is LSPI - low speed pre-ignition. I have numerous Hyundai and Kia's do this under light throttle.

Try putting in 93 or better octane fuel and see if it goes away or reduces it.

For some reason, the direct injection and the carbon build up that comes with seems to cause this condition.

Also, there are cases of the little roller on the bottom of the direct injection pump wearing and causing a noise.

Hi thank you for the reply I live in the UK and i normally use Premium fuel (bp)
Are you referring to the camshaft sprocket that's one of the few things I have on my list to give the garage on Friday when it is going in. would that cause the excessive use of oil?

It would be the roller tappet that rides on the camshaft that drives the GDI fuel pump. It looks like this:

Excessive oil use by the the Hyundai engines is caused by carbon build up on the oil control rings on the pistons. If you only drive short trips or low speed this will may the situation worse. The oil control rings become clogged with carbon build up letting oil get into the combustion chamber where it is burned. This then causes the oil level to drop and if it is not checked at least every 500 miles the oil level will be too low and then this is when the engine failures start happening.

I advise changing oil with synthetic only, every 3 months/3,000 miles, without fail. If you have the 2.0L or 2.4L engines, use 5w-30. If you have the 1.6L turbo, use 5w-40.

Since you are in the UK, I believe your fuel is rated by RON number(Research Octane number). I would use EU RON 98, which is equal to 93 octane here in the US and see if the rattle goes away. It's the easiest thing to try first.

It is the 1.6 gdi se nav version. It was serviced in January full oil change fully synthetic oil used air filter oil etc. It is not just used for short journeys I use it at least twice a month to travel up north doing around 150 miles there and shame miles on way back sometime in the shame day. Plus I do take it for a run at least once a week doing 60mph stead to clear out the bad stuff as garage told me about that last year after they used a cleaner.

But I will suggest all of the info to the garage on Friday as see what is what because I can't really do an oil change every 3 months it would spend more time in the garage then on the road. So possibly time for me to get rid of the car. 😞

TL Tucson muffler seem to have concern with resonance / baffle rattle noise within the actual muffler case. Driving along, with right engine speed, noise within muffler hits.

We have replaced a host of mufflers for baffle rattle-hum type noise

1.6 / 1.6T is also good for piston rattle in the bores, cylinder-piston scoring too

noise could be on the inside of muffler take a rag over your hand so you dont burn youself if hot & hit & shake exhaust i had a rattle at vareing engine RPM's Yesterday when i jacked up the back of my Santa Fe i discovered & isolated it down to one small spot on the rear of Muffler the Fix was useing 2 6"inch stainless steel hose clamps and a small bolt clamped on troubled spot that was about 2 inches in diameter & shes Fixed.!

Clarify "doing this"

Muffler rattle - buzz when throttle jazzed and we get a "BRAAAAAAAAP" sound from muffler / out tail pipe ? Just a lose baffle with in muffler case, more pizza kid car sound than anything else

Warranty muffler, or customer pay if out of warranty (2019 likely out by both time & mile) , but if low mile, try and get dealer to submit PA Request for help from HMA toward muffler replacement due it being common concern-remedy for a few yrs now
