Rack and pinion is toast

Noticed while standing still there is a knocking when I turn the wheel. Also hear a know when driving and I hit bumps. mostly noticeable when going slow.

I'm at 104,000 kms and my mechanic says the rack and pinion is toast. $800 CND to replace. I've never had to replace this on any car.

I did a quick search and didn't see any threads about this. I'm assuming this is not common? And not covered by warranty?

Thanks

I based my search off of a 2011 Sonata since I don't know what year you have but RockAuto.com has a re manufactured rack and pinion full unit with inner tie rods for $220 plus $67 core.

How much is your mechanic charging you for parts?

Mine is whining whenever I turn the wheel. Have a diagnostic scheduled tomorrow. Not looking forward to the news.

And yeah that 200 plus sounds right for the part. I have been seeing some on eBay fire 110 but not sure if I want to chance that.

Best of luck OP. It will not be a cheap fix

I would probably get a second opinion, various things can make a thumping noise from front end. Racks are gone when they start to seize up, or leak if a hydraulic unit. Not a common failure part Normally.

If doing DIY make sure to wrap bungy cord or your use seat belt to keep steering wheel from going beyond 90degrees. Click spring wire assembly can get damaged and/or fire airbag. So unhook battery as a precaution.

Found some new ones on eBay for like 115 with free shipping.

Steering Gear Rack Pinion New Kia Optima Hyundai Sonata Turbo 12 13 | eBay

Thinking I am going to go this way and do the work myself. At this point, fixing the Red Sled and shedding some blood/sweat/tears/fur has become a point of pride.

Also the service manual is available online and shows the steps with pictures. I bet this would take a Saturday at most.

And they just got higher!!!

D**n part was for a later build date Sonata than mine (fits cars mfg'd after June 2010...Red Sled was born 5/10/10). Had to pay dealer $297 to take the car apart then put it back together with the busted rack.

I hate this car with passion now and I refuse to put another dime into it!

DOH! Man, I hear your pain. You have replaced quite a few parts which is concerning. So Ill rub it in a bit, how much cost between the Terrain and the Sonata for non-consumable replacement parts?

I also know Hyundai is going down hill when they go from giving away drain bolt "gaskets" (call it a gasket instead of a washer and you can charge for it right?) to charging $1.11 (not a type-o) for it. Seriously? $1.11 for something that probably cost $0.04?

Just made an appointment to bring mine to the dealer for what sounds like the same issue - the steering wheel clicks when turned away from center and there's a rattling noise behind the driver's side of the dashboard sometimes when going over a bump.

Dealer's website for online appointments didn't have anything available for 3 weeks, so I called and couldn't get an appointment sooner than 2 weeks out.

2011 Sonata SE Turbo just under 4 years old with 52,000 miles.

I had a "clunk" noise develop in my car all of the sudden (not with grinding noise). It only occurred when turning to the right and then immediately turning left. took it to the dealer during a regular maintenance and mentioned this noise to the technician and got it repaired under warranty. the "clunk" noise is a known issue and dealers are fully aware of it I was told it is actually a simple rubber piece that fails . however, it is not a recall issue so it is up to the dealer to do it as a warranty repair.
