One Hid No Longer Working

During the initial install, the ceramic shaft on the driver's side was broken - not a big deal - or so I thought. It stopped working a few weeks ago but since I don't drive much at night did not think much of it and got a new set of bulbs from another forum member :)thumbsup: jasen1). Today I went to change the bulb but no dice! I received two new ones and tried both to no avail, the passenger side works just fine. Now I am at a loss - could the ballast be gone? I have also included a pic of the burnt bulb (yes.. it did melt a tad!)

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

I've had couple of aftermarket HIDs on my other cars in the past (and my current DD) and overall they're fairly simple . Generally if its not your bulb? its your balast that's causing the problem. Why don't you switch the working balast to non working side and see what happens?

X2. Also check the ground on the driver's side.

Bro whatever HID set up you currently have running... just pull everything out: bulbs and ballasts.

Go here: http://www.v-leds.com/H7/HID-Kits/sc267108...ForLanding/true

They have 6K, 5K, and also H8 3K for your fogs should you wish. But V-HID's are awesome and its a VERY reputable company, anyone will vouch for me here.

Their kit is the more affordable route with awesome quality at 60.00!
Comparison: Xenonsupply.com - 170.00
Theretrofitsource.com - 150.00

did you try switching the ballast around? that will tell you right away if the ballast is bad. Sometimes it takes a couple of cycles on/off/on to have them both fire up if your ballast is bad.
If could also be the relay on the harness....

I am at a loss about the melting of the bulb....

My kit is from hidextra - it was working so I have no doubt that it was my own doing by using a bulb which had a broken ceramic shaft.

I'm going to trouble shoot it tomorrow and will switch balasts around. Talk about an aggravation though - I figured the bulb burned out and it would be as simple as replacing the defective bulb, but, alas, I did not count on my crappy luck when it comes to modding.

I would contact HIDextra, there customer service is pretty good now.

Alright - changed ballasts from pass side to drivers and voila! Light is back on *whew!!!* ..and since hidextra had their kits on sale + 25% off, I don't feel too bad. I did go with the 5k kit instead of the 6k (I can then try both) and hope that the light output at night will be better.

It really wasn't hidextra's fault that the rubber housing melted but my own (rem. I installed it and broke the ceramic shaft while doing so) so I won't bother them with my own stupidity

It's probably from the arch where the + and - eventually touched each other and shorted the two wires. I would investigate by peeling it apart to see if wires have touched each other. Another possible reason is heat build up. Didn't you mention that a piece was broken from the get go? It may have assisted in the degredation of quality causing the light to pre-maturely fail.

I'll have to check the bulb, but a broken rod could indeed lead to premature failure

Do you have a relay harness? Could it be because of the current build up?
Ok I know this if off topic but can someone explain to me in simple english what this relay harness is in detail? I'm just used to plug and play with absoblute no issues on my previous cars. This relay harness is something new to me.

It is just a relay with a fused power wire. The harness's main function is to power the HID straight from the battery, using the stock headlight's signal to turn them on. The harness usually has thicker wires than OEM which allows higher current to travel safer.
