Leaving work and turning left from turn lane to get gas when a girl in a Pontiac Sunbird pulled out from the station and hit her in the driver's side. Her insurance company is going to take care of this, but here's the resulting damage. Getting the estimate and check in the next few days.

OUCH! Stupid, ugly, Pontiac Sunbird! (Hope no one here has ever owned one, haha.) That's going to be somewhat expensive, so it's good that your insurance will cover it. I know from, er, experience.

Early 90's I had a Pontiac J2000 (which is the sunbird and the Chevy Cavalier with different rear bumpers and internal trim). Mine was bright red with chrome rims. A real nickel and diming car. $80 sensors that went out often and eventually entire power assist rack that started to leak.

Nothing like my Elantra

Damage like that would make me sell a car, who am I kidding, a deep enough scratch might be enough to do that!
Exactly why I don't have Elantra anymore, and heck, my damage wasn't even as bad as this. My OCD couldn't handle it, so when another opportunity arose, I took it.

that's pretty nasty dent.
The door is not a problem, but the panel...

Make sure they warrant the repair for rust and Hyundai is OK with it.
My thoughts precisely. The door has a cleaner dent, and it's an easier to remove piece. Since the quarter panel is attached to, like, the entire side roofline and such, it's not like you can easily just pop it off and replace it. Wonder if they'll do the drill and pull method or what. Maybe some of you body work experts would know. Darn crumply mess!

Agree with the deep scratch theory! Just one of those would break my heart. Having the damage pictured above would require an extended stay in the ICU! Not sure I could survive it, emotionally.
It's a good thing Ingrid survived that tornadey, or else we'd be seeing Elantra number 3! Or maybe that Optima you're secretly drooling over. ;)

Sunbird... ugh. What an insult to know that the other car was improved by the collision.

Hope your luck improves,
Don
HAHA. Priceless. My first car was Pontiac, and trust me, being a huge, fake-wood-sided gas guzzling station wagon, it was ugly as dirt. RIP Pontiac. You used to be cool back in the era of muscle cars and such, but your '90s and early 2000s ideations were somewhat overstylized. :(

Just so you don't regret it later, get a new wheel.
+1...never know what tweakage could have happened there.

I'm probably taking it to the shop the Hyundai dealer recommended, which is at a Ford dealer. They are part of the same ownership group.

I agree the quarter panel is a pretty big deal, especially with the damage to the door sill. I also had to add a little weatherstrip till we can get it fixed as water was coming in around the back of the window frame, and we're expecting rain over the next few days. The whole door alignment is "tweaked" I think I sealed it up pretty well.

Every car we have owned in the last 14 years has been hit with my wife driving, none her fault. All the others till now were rear ended, and the other was hit by a deer... or vice versa. Thankfully the only injury was the deer.

Since the car is "new" 2013 I would insist on a new rim from Hyundai. I also have a "spare tire kit" and that's why I got a full size spare to replace it with. If you have a blow out or a severe puncture, the seal kit will be worthless.

Good luck!!!
I should have been more clear. We have the actual Hyundai OEM mini-spare, jack, etc. that I bought a few months back. I agree that the sealing kit is pretty silly.

Holly, I'm drooling over the Equus! Just not fiscally responsible, in my opinion. Why would I buy a car that costs 3x an Elantra (+/- a few thousand bucks) for something that gets 10 MPG less. Doubtful my ego needs that much massaging!

That's nothing, they can just buff that out.:eek:

Here's my 02 work truck in Jan. 08. Totaled, over $10K of damage.
Impact at about 40 mph and I'm glad everything worked, seat belt and air bags. Young lady pulled right in front of me to make a left turn when I was going down the road. Neither party had injuries, all was good.

Glad no one got injured, they'll make it good as new.

Visited the Allstate claims office yesterday which is the insurer for the girl who hit our car. Ironically, the driver who hit our Elantra was there at the same time getting her estimate. No violence ensued.

Anyway... the estimate came to $4,210!!!! They gave us the check on the spot. New door and new quarter panel were the big ticket items. They cleaned up the wheel which now just shows a few scuffs to the clearcoat so it will be refinished.

Hope to get it in the body shop today or tomorrow. Using an "Allstate Authorized Shop" so they will handle any supplementals with Allstate directly, and it is the same shop our dealer recommended.

Both the other driver's insurance company, Allstate, and mine, Erie, have been really great. They both called multiple times and were really on top of things. Erie closed the file this morning when Allstate stepped up to take care of everything.

I've only been with Erie for about 6 months but was really impressed, and pleased with their service.

Dropped the car off and got a rental... a Fiat 500.

Said repairs to Elantra should take 10-14 business days!

I'm glad you got it handled properly and without hassle.

Question though. Are they replacing the whole thing or just a part of the assembly?

Oh yeah, how's the Fiat treating you?
They are replacing the entire rear door and rear quarter panel. They said the inner panels for the rear quarter should be salvageable, but would not know for sure until they took off the damaged parts.

The Fiat is really funky. Rides pretty poorly (not unexpected with such a short wheelbase), the transmission (6 speed auto) always seems to be hunting gears in traffic based on throttle position, and the back seat is basically unusable. It is pretty peppy however, and is kind of fun to drive, although the typical "Italian driving position" where your knees are bent and you still have to extend your arms for the steering wheel would get old on a trip. It's also not very quiet. Have not been on the interstate yet. I may see if they'll swap it for something else next week, as it could become tiresome. I definitely think there are better car choices for the $... Accent, Kia Rio, Chevy Sonic, Ford Fiesta, etc.

Randy, Ingrid may have passed you Monday on I-40! Would have appeard as a white blur heading West. LOL The kid across the street from my son has a new Fiat. Loves it. Probably doesn't hurt that he's about 5-5, 105 pounds. He fits nicely inside. At 6-2, 190, I'm no longer a member of the American Contortionist Club. I'm all about "stretch," now!

I got a surprise today when the Ford dealer body shop called to say the Elantra was ready. Dropped it off 7 business days ago and they told me it would take at least 10, so they really hustled. I happened to be in the area, so I stopped by to look at it, and they really did a nice job. Paint matched, pinstripe matched, damaged wheel refinishing looked great. I noticed two VERY small scratches on the trunk lid at the quarter panel, and the plastic wheelwell shield was not quite aligned properly in the fender, and they immediately took it back to the shop to correct those issues, and I'll pick it up tomorrow!

Goodbye Fiat, and I get my Versa back, which Nissan put a new CVT in 10 days ago under an extended warranty of 10 years, 120k miles that they added to the CVTs just after we bought it in 2008. Great for us as it just turned 100,000 miles and now has a new CVT that cost us ZERO!!!!
