Mild creaking sound from panoramic moonroof

Noticed an intermittent creaking noise when the vehicle is in motion (low to moderate speed). The noise is not very loud but audible if you turn down the radio volume. It sounds like 2 hard objects rubbing against each other. I am positive it comes from the panoramic moonroof because it only happens if the moonroof is close. The noise goes away instantly if I open the moonroof ever so slightly. It has been intermittent and seems to happen at any temperature.

Anyone else notice this issue?

Although there are several threads regarding the panoramic sunroof and creaking, this one has the most recent posts, so I'll add my latest experience here.

My car went into the shop on Friday for the gas gauge issue, and I also asked them to look at the roof creak. I played them a recording of me driving on newly resurfaced asphalt, so they believed there was an issue and started digging.

The first repair they made was to replace the seals that run along the driver and passenger sides of the roof. Slight decrease in creaking, but not enough for them to consider it fixed. Luckily for me there was a regional rep for Hyundai at my dealership the day I dropped the car off, and he told the service manager about an updated rear seal for between the sliding and stationary glass panes. It's included on all 2017 Sonatas with the panoramic roof, and can now be ordered for 2015 and 2016 when the creaking issue presents itself. According to my service adviser, the part is so new, there was no P/N in the system and it had to be manually ordered.

Picked up my car last night and have driven just over 100 miles since. Of course the seal is still nice and new, but everything about the roof is quieter now. Opening and closing it is quieter than when I did so on my way home with the car back in December.

I'll post a shot of my paperwork later tonight if anyone's interested.

I had the moonroof seal TSB applied in the Spring this year - but maybe that's the old TSB? I will have to wait for a while to see if the fix you had appears here.

Meanwhile I am sad to say that the Rubber Saver product I used on my moonroof is wearing off as it has been raining here. I guess I will have to wait for that new TSB or try the Squeak Reduction Tape solution.

Here is a copy of the work order from last week. The third part listed is the one I was told is brand new for the 2017 Sonata, and the service department needed to wait for a P/N they could order against since it wasn't officially for the 2015.

Fast forward 8 days and all is still quiet, save for the occasional sounds that come from aggressive cornering causing some body roll. But even then, the noise is maybe 0.5/10.

I've had my 2015 in three times on the squeaky sunroof issue. The first two were just adjustments and other little things they tried. The third was a replacement of the materials between the sliding roof and the stationary roof.

Each time, the noise has returned. The latest is a noise on the passenger side of the movable sunroof any time the car flexes or hits bumps.

I bought a product at Walmart called CRC silicone spray and applied it to all of the rubber gasket materials around the movable sunroof. I also closed the sunroof and sprayed it in the seam between the gaskets. Today is day 3 of doing that with no squeaks or rattles yet. I'm not sure how often I am going to have to apply the product but it does appear to solve the issue at least temporarily.

Hyundai ended up removing my panoramic roof and replacing it with a brand new one (almost an $8000 repair with parts and labor), that solved the problem right up to this latest recall. Now my roof rattles at all speeds and is extremely annoying. For compensation Hyundai put their best warranty on the car, bumper to bumper for 120,000 miles. My 2014 Sonata's panoramic roof never once gave me a single issue.

Only thing that has worked...

I live in New Mexico and as such it can be hot, dusty, and dry here. I have noticed in those months, the panoramic seals seem to dry up some and lead to the creaking noise that you guys are referring to. I have taken the car in on a few occasions to two different dealerships and asked them to lube the seals.

The first dealership used a product that worked like a charm for about 3 months. The second dealership used something that was absolute crap and did nothing but attract dust. I was able to find out from the first dealership what they used. It was a product that the technician just had in his toolbox.

I ordered a tube of it off Amazon, and while not cheap, it just works. Here is the name of the product (new member so can't post a link) for those of you that want to take care of this issue yourself. Hope you'll have as good of luck as I have with it.

Genuine Honda 08798-9013 Silicone Grease (Amazon) $14.89

I'm currently using water proof silicone lube which doesn't last too long being so thin. I think I will also try a silicone based grease, except maybe just use a generic brand if i can find it at the hardware store.

My mom's early 15 Sonata had good luck with her pano sunroof for the first 1.5 years and 12k. And then she got rear ended by an F150 causing damage to the bumper and trunk lid. Now the sunroof rattles while driving down the road. She had the seal lubricated, which stopped it for a few days but it came right back. It's driving her nuts.

I am at a total of 55 days in the shop for this issue. They have replaced a piece of glass re engineered. Stopped for about 2 months and now it is worse than ever!!!!!!!!! Dealership has told me they will no longer work on the sunroof!!!!! No one will even address the issue. LEMON LAW TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm happy with my Silicone lube fix. i did it differently over the weekend. Instead of spraying it all over the place, I applied it manually with a cotton ball to all the surrounding parts of the roof that would make contact with the car and now it is back to being whisper quiet.

The mistake i made before was just spraying it on kinda randomly, and when doing that, the silicone had the tendency to just slide right off. Applying with hand and cotton ball or rag, the lube seems to stay in place better as the black rubber parts stay shiny longer than before. THis time I also applied it to the left and right side of the moon roof where it's the hard plastic as that makes the most contact probably.

i'm so glad i did not take it to the dealer to have them rip apart the roof just to replace it with the risk of sounds getting worse.

This is such an easy $10 fix, it's worth a try folks!

I finally did the same and used spray silicone on my sunroof. Only this time I didn't just wipe it on like I had previously have done.
I began by first opening the roof and wiping down all the rubber seals to clean anything off of them. Then I closed the roof and used the straw on the can and barely pressed the button down so it came out slowly and ran the silicone all around the seals and even on the track that runs to the rear. I let it sit several minutes and then went back and reapplied.

After applying the silicone, the roof made a really bad grunting noise when opening and closing but that only lasted through that day. It is now opening smooth and quiet and not a single creak when closed while driving. Yay!!!

So far it's been just over a week and it's been the quietest it's ever been. It made noise from day one and the dealer applied some white grease that eventually got tacky and made more noise than ever. I'm hoping it last quite a while. I have no issues having to reapply every few months. I'd much rather do that than let them rip the headliner down, which I'm sure they already did because I see the tsb done when I look at it on myhyundai site.

Hay I also get that grunting sound too after I apply it on and open/close roof. You'd think the lube would be the last thing that would cause grunt sounds but i've notice it too.

I'm thinking a silicone grease would last longer, but I was unable to find such a product in my local hardware stores. I'll stick to this spray for the meantime as it's cheap and will last for many applications.

I got myself some Dupont Krytox Performance Lubricant. After applying it all around the seals it actually made a night and day difference. Now to see how long it lasts before the creaking comes back.

Well after a few weeks and going through two washes and lastnight rain storm I did notice an occasional sleek on my drive this morning. So the silicone did help but didn't last as long as I'd hoped. This time around I will use some o ring lube that I use on the pool pump. Hopefully it'll last a lot longer. Not that I'm complaining as my poor car had to be outside all the time so nothing will last as long as one that is garaged.

WOW! That is definitely excessive. I would go batshit crazy if mine made that much racket. Only time it is ever really bad is on severely rough pavement, and I tend to avoid those kind of road. Even then it is still never like yours. I can't imagine what is going on if it still does this after an entirely new roof.

The level of frustration I have had to deal with is not worth the price of the car. I purchased my car Jan 2016 and noticed within a few days the roof was creaking. I returned to the dealership and they stated that the car was having some growing pains and the creaking would eventually go away. At 1800 miles I returned to the dealership now with an annoying rattle and creaking noise. The dealership took the car for 2 days, but did not know how to fix the problem. They said Hyundai was working on a solution. A few weeks later after several visits they said they had a fix (2nd official dealership visit), to drop the car off and they would fix the roof in about an hour. Their idea of fixing the roof was to put lube and grease all over the roof, headliner, leather seats, and arm rest. This did not fix the issue at all. It made matters worse and they didn't even bother to clean the car after getting grease everywhere. In April I issued a formal complaint with Hyundai Corp which went ignored. In June I issued a 2nd complaint warning of a lemon law violation. It took a few weeks and me calling every single day but they called back and agreed to replace my entire roof. This process took a week (3rd visit) and seemed to fix the problem for a few months. Two weeks ago my car was at the dealership for a 4th time and once again the dealership just greased up the rails again and claimed it was fixed. I complained to Hyundai once again that the rattle is still present, so yesterday they had an engineer go to the dealership to check out the car. If he determined the rattle was still present Hyundai stated they would but the car back, yet low and behold he couldn't hear the rattle at all. He claimed no noise is coming from the roof at all..

Here is the video proof taken right after I picked my car up he is lying..

What are your thoughts? I have already requested the BBB get involved. Can you hear the rattle? The popcorn sound after the 2 minute mark?

I would get a Certified Auto Mechanic to Certify your complaint. Then initiate a Lemon Law. Check with your local TV stations for Consumer Advocate. They will call Hyundai on your behalf, and the Dealer/MFG hate negative publicity.

Just a few ideas. Best of Luck.

So far my WD40 waterproof silicone has lasted 2 months so far. As mentioned, the last time I did it, I applied it on the left and right sides of the moonroof itself (the black plastic), rather than spraying on the rubber seals.

That seemed to have made it last longer for me. I applied using a cotton ball rather than spraying directly and that might be another contributing factor that helped it last.

I keep reading about creaking noises on the panoramic sunroofs.. does anyone hear a squeaking sound? I drive a '15 sonata 2.0t limited, and my pano sunroof seems to have evolved from a creak into a full-on squeaking. ALL. THE. TIME. If the ground is uneven, squeak. If there are bumps in the road, squeak. Whenever I drive into a plaza or parking lot, squeak. Literally squeaking all the time and it's driving me nuts (although I have noticed that it will creak when the weather is below 50 degrees). I've taken my car to the dealership a couple of times for various problems including the squeak, and every time they tell me that they've addressed the issue and fixed it. LIES. The last time I took it in, the cabin was quiet for 5 minutes until I got on the freeway. Then the squeak came back in full force. Is lubricant the only fix that we have for now?

Silicone Lube is the best thing to try first . You just have to find the sweet spot making the noise. Unless you want dealership to rip apart your whole roof to replace. You'll see and hear another guy few posts up ended up with worse results after dealership replaced.

Think of this, how many glass panoramic roofs do you think your dealer has experience replacing? Probably not enough to give you peace of mind.
