I've had my 95 model Hyundai Sonata GLS Levant for about five years, and I've been having this problem ever since I bought it. Since discovering this forum was wondering if anyone else had any advice on how to fix it. I've talked to alot of mechanics over the years, and none have been able to pin down a possible cause. I know next to nothing about cars, so please bare with me if I'm not using the correct terms for anything.
As my description states above, my car seems to be losing power on hot days after a couple of hours of straight driving. It seems to be triggered when driving up hills, and only stopping the car for a few minutes seems to fix it. Even after turning the ignition off and restarting, the problem will resurface again after about fifteen minutes or so. At least I think its losing power; all I know is that the rpm's start going crazy with the car jerking like mad and me or whoever is driving being unable to accelerate. The car doesn't turn itself off or anything, and no warning lights come on. It also only seems to hapeen after the engine is under half full; only rarely has it ever happened after being refueled completely.
One mechanic suggested it was the fuel filter, but I replaced that to no avail. I thought it may have been a fuel pump, but when a mechanic I tried took it up a hill and couldn't replicate the problem (he said if it was the fuel pump the engine could be losing power whenever I went up a hill and not just sometimes) he couldn't do anything to fix it. Another mechanic suggested the coils, which he said was fine when checked, but ended up replacing the spark plugs anyway.
For just driving around town it seems fine, and only long journey's on hot days and driving up hill seems to cause the problem (which probably explains why no mechanic has been able to replicate it). I haven't taken it on any long trips lately as I don't want to risk anything happening, but dread the next time I do.
Any help would be appreciated!
