Glow plug relay problem

Hi everybody

Having a problem with our H100.

The engine will not crank and the glow plug relay throws in then immediately out. The glow plug warning light on the dash is constantly flashing, the low tension side to the glow plug relay only activates for about 0.2 of a second and there is no current going to the starter motor solonoid.

I have managed to start with a tow then occasionally it will start on the ignition
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, belly.

When you say there is no current going to the starter solenoid, do you mean on the solenoid control wire. I assume there is voltage on the main supply cable?

Does the engine crank if you short/bridge the solenoid control terminal to the main supply terminal?

The fact that it will start from the key after the engine has run for a while seems to suggest it's a flat battery?

Hi Scott thank you for your quick reply to my problem.

When the ignition switch is activated there is no current going to the starter motor on the thin red wire. However I can short this out bypass the ignition switch and the engine will crank. At the same time when the ignition switch is on the glow plug solenoid clicks on and straight off it does spend anytime supplying the glow plugs with current. I can short circuit the glow plugs and the starter and the engine will run forever.

On the dash the engine light is on and the glow plug warning light flashes and all the time the engine is running they stay on. Occasionally when I come to start the engine with the key it will start and act normal and then the next time the glow plug flashes again and it will not activate starter or anything. I have looked at the ignition switch on a quick check it appears to be ok. If I short out the glow plug relay it doesn't heat the glow plugs.

I am a bit stumped at the moment and if I could see an ignition starter motor glow plug circuit diagram I may be able to spot the problem but as yet I cant find one anywhere.

Kind regards

Graham

No, I've not managed to find any info on the H100 either, but I did find the diagram below which relates to the Mitsubishi L300 which is basically the same van. The colours might not match but it'll give you an idea of how the starting & glow system works.

Straight away I see there is a connector or maybe a fusible link on the Black/Red wire that supplies power to the starter and glow plug relays. Have you checked the starter relay to see if it has a power supply when the key is removed?

Anyway, I hope the info below helps.

Scottie.

HI Scottie

The wiring diagram has been very helpful thank you. I have found an intermittent fault in the glow control unit and at the moment I have bypassed it. It looks quite an expensive part! Hopefully very soon I will get round to sorting it out.

Again Many thanks
