Gas Tank Won't Fill Up

After pumping for a few seconds the pump stops because it thinks the tank is full. I have been searching for other 2011 Sonata owners with this problem but can't find any. I see it on older cars, something about charcoal pellets, but not on new cars. Could this be charcoal pellets on this car? The car is still new, why would this happen?

I had a similar issue with my car. I can't remember the exact details, but IIRC there was some issue with a valve in the gas tank. The remedy was to replace the tank. Totally covered under warranty, and no issues since.

I actually have this same issue and about the same time this started happening, my "miles to empty" was affected as well....meaning, prior to this issue, the MTE would say 420 miles on average at fill up and now it is always around 375 MTE.

For the mechanical guys here, could this be a related issue?

I've had this happen but only on certain overly sensitive gas pumps. The pump handle senses the back-pressure from the neck of the tank to shut off. The simple solution is to back the fill handle out of the tank an inch or two to let some of the air in the tank escape around it.

If it's happening on EVERY pump then I'd definitely check with the dealer about your tank venting.

I have two Sonatas and my SE had the problem. The dealer had to order some filter that is on the tank filler to filter gases etc. My GLS is now starting to do the same thing and I need to take it in to the dealer soon.

how do you think that miles until empty works just after a fill up? Ive noticed it resets MPG on each fill up, does it just use a previous avg or something?

mine use to read 484 until empty on every fill up for the past year. now it reads 459 after fill up. strange, wonder why it would change now?

only thing ive done is had a recent service. they did a transmission firmware recall of some sort, and the shift knob again.

i know that this is an old post but I am getting the same problem with my 2011 SE ... it has 37k miles ... do you think this is still covered under warranty ?
