Full Tank Calculated How?

Does anybody know how the miles to empty are caluculated after you fill up? I used to get 440 then 435 now I just noticed I had 422, I have 26k miles now. I do a whole lot more city driving now so that is most likely the cause. Does it look at the last mpg reading and base it on that? I know it gets reset after everytime you fill up, just curious if anybody knew.

Guessing that it takes the average MPG for that tank full and looks at how much fuel is left in the tank and uses those two numbers to give miles until empty. So if you are averaging 30 MPG for that tank and you have 10 gallons left until empty, then it tells you you have 300 miles to go before empty. Not sure how accurate that is. The last tank I had the miles until empty told me I had 46 miles left to go...2 minutes later it just showed 3 straight lines until empty. Needless to say, I immediately found the next gas station and filled up.

That's one thing I hate about having a digital gauge...you can't tell how empty the tank really is.

wow....i've never driven mine until that low yet...and i am about to turn one year old and 22K miles. so, our gauge will blink once low? is that our low fuel warning indicator or is there an actual idiot light on the dash?

nevermind...i'll use the trusty brick that came with it.

The gas light comes on when the gauge shows one bar. It will eventually start blinking and show "---" on Miles to Empty. I have driven around 33 miles with the last bar blinking.

The two times I've filled up it's been shortly after the "---" came up, and both times I put 63ish litres in the tank. So based on my average mileage I probably still have 70-80ish km left when it gets to that point. I'm not eager to test it though. ;)
Two words: Roadside Assistance :)

With my Sonata I typically drop down to 1 bar when the yellow-orange low fuel indicator lights up. Intermittently the bar will flash for several seconds then remain solid.

When the DTE gauge goes "---", the fuel gauge bar will flash on my car on a regular basis. When my fuel light comes on, I immediately switch to the DTE indicator and start doing mental math while I'm driving of how far I car drive by adding the DTE range to the miles listed on the odometer reading adjusting for when the DTE stays stagnant or goes down. When the DTE goes "---", I take that final number and add it to the reading on the odometer. So if my last DTE reading was 45 before it goes "---" and my odometer reading was 9846, I would add 9846 + 45 and know that I will need to fuel up at or before the 9891 mark on the odometer.

Having run my Sonata out of gas once (intentionally for scientific purposes) I can tell you all the last bar doesn't disappear, it'll keep flashing until you have no fuel in the car and my fuel calculation seems to be pretty accurate as when I ran out of gas, I couldn't go another another 2 miles beyond what I calculated, so I tend to fill up my car within 10 miles of what I think I should be able to go.

It's actually not recommended to consistently drive so close to empty. You'll suck up more trash off of the bottom of the tank which can cause things to start getting clogged uip in the fuel system. I'll drive down to one bar and then fuel up but I try not to take it too far down.

Trash? Unless you're filling up with cr*p gas then there shouldn't be any trash in your tank, and even so with all the shifting and moving that cars do said trash would inevitably be sucked into fuel system eventually.
