What weight oil did the put in? Also, check the oil level to make sure they didn't overfill.

 

Should I check the oil level before I drive? I checked the oil level on the dipstick after I drove for about half an hour and it was beyond the orange end and on to the actual stick itself? Did they overfill?

 

I just checked again and they put 5w-20 mileguard which seems to be the appropriate type. I checked the dipstick and it seems like its at the second line which seems good. Maybe it will require a bit of miles to break in.

 

I'd be scared to go to those places. I prefer to go to the dealer.

Yea, it's better to change it yourself. I avoid Jiffy Lube because it is filled with people who don't give a crap about your car, they fill the ****** oil, use ****** filters, on top of that they aren't too knowledgable about the exact oil capacity of your car and tend to just guestimate.

 

Get that Jiffy Screw crap off your car and use a genuine Hyundai oil filter. I guarantee you'll see an improvement.

 

Excellent advice. My car wouldn't know a non-OEM oil filter if you held it under it's oil pan. Hyundai DOES manufacture one h*ll of a fine oil filter product. Some things you DON'T scrimp on. Besides, $6 bucks for a quality filter is a small price to pay for piece of mind.

 

in here canada, we have to follow what the dealership ask us to do. Has to follow the service #1, #2, #3 or they wont do anything if something happen to the car. More like void the warranty.
We get 1/2 price oil change tho.

 

Who told you that? The laws in the USA prevent manufacturers and dealers from essentially blackmailing the owner.

I've taken my car to Iffy Lube in the past and not have any trouble. That said, I would go to them as a last resort. They are the least likely to care about doing the job right. If you trust your dealership, take it there. Many charge a little more, but much more likely to do a better job and use better filters. If you live close to one, may even be good to ask them to throw in a few free oil changes with purchase.

That said, the key is the attitude of the person doing the work no matter where you take it. That is why it is often best to do it yourself once you've been shown how to do it correctly. In some cars the filter is hard to reach, but I understand you don't even have to lift the Elantra to do this (though it might help to lift it a few inches.)

 

I do mine myself at work which is very handy as we have the lifts and the tools. Th eoil is dirt cheap, too. I think I paid $13 for the 4.2 quarts of synthetic blend 5W20. :grin:

Well, I went to the dealer for this just a couple of weeks ago. They did use a hyundai filter and 5W/20 and I have experienced the same after-affect as you.

I suspect that the original oil was either a 0W/20 or a synthetic. I am not sure how to determine the type/rating of the factory oil...but sure would like to know.

 

My dealer uses 5W-20 Mobil 1 for their synthetic changes on mine. Not sure about the break in oil but changed mine with Mobil One at 3250 since the dealer did the first oil change for free.

I am on the 7500 mile interval now which should be more than fine for synthetic and is the Hyundai specified interval.

 

sometimes dont just depend on your dealership on what they say and to follow this and that because your car is new and not to void the warranty. Forget it its your car not their car. Do what you wanna do- they dont know how you drive, etc....DYI'ng your car is the best thing to do coz it makes you to know your car better. I just went in for my first 4000 oil change at my local Farifield CT dealership. They were awesome. Did the oil change, filter and noticed the car was pulling a bit to the left, so balanced the tires and all for FREE! Had me in and out in 1 hour. No compliants, such a different experience than with my previous Audi. Kudos to Hyundai!!

 

The Factory fill is supposed to be Full synthetic Quaker State Ultimate Durability 5W-20.
Buy a 4.4 or 5 quart jug and take it to the dealer for a customer supplied oil change. That should increase your mileage. I am trying it next change, shake it up before giving to them, engine oil settles.

The factory Fill gave me the best mileage by far.

Your first oil change depends on your driving conditions. The owner's manual calls for oil changes at 3750 miles or 6 months if you drive in severe conditions. It's described on the page after the Normal Maintenance schedule. Some people like to do it after the first 1000 miles because there might metal bits in the oil from the break-in period.

Yeah it applies to all oils, synthetic too but it takes a while to settle and if you buy oil then use it soon its fine. The simple act of transportation basically mixes it up. But knowing that I still shake oil, also shake gas can before pouring in lawn mower, laundry detergent, iced tea, gatorade, medicine etc. Unless its bubbly or water shake it.

What about the folks that go to dealerships, jiffy lube or similar establishments with those bulk tanks. Do they shake up the tanks first? Do some late arriving customers get more additives from the bottom of the tank? LMAO

Bulk oil gets shook on the truck then never really sits long enough to settle. A 55 gallon drum don't last long at fast lube and they dont buy 100 at a time.

I change the oil myself. Since I live in a hot, humid climate, I use 5W30 regular oil and a K&N filter (it has a built-in nut on it that makes it easy to remove). No performance problems or complaints. Gas mileage is on par at 40-41 hwy/37-38 town. My neighbor has a car just like mine and does the same. My only gripe so far is road noise, though that's another topic.

 

I do believe 5W20 is better for the car, unless it is unobtainable in smaller countries. I have never encountered "road noise" as much of a problem as my Elantra began to wear in. Probably because I live in California and we have such beautiful roads... However I can never really get the gas mileage you are getting T_T... there's constant stop and go traffic and most of the time, you have to keep passing idiot drivers. Lately, I've been averaging only like 34 highway and 24 city.. however about 70% of my highways are stop and go traffic...

 

okay, after 150+ miles or so in after the oil change, the sounds are all gone. The mpg is starting to creep up where it used to be now... hopefully

 

I went to my dealer for first oil change and was worried about the prices but was surprised it was CHEAPER than where I would go for my old car, only $30 I was pleased...so I wouldn't rule out dealerships especially cause they use better products.
But like others are saying be wary of the quality of places like Jiffy lube, they could be fine but you never know......and I'm always worried about timing if it's taking under 20 mins it's not a good oil change in my books. :mellow:

Yes, there was a similar concern by my neighbor at Jiffy Lube. They replaced his filter and oil in 5 minutes. Plus all the "other" checks they claim to do? Seriously?

I let my oil drain for at least 30! Probably overkill but it makes me "feel good" about it! :grin:

 

In defense of the fast lube places they typically have several people working on a car to get the oil changed in 10 minutes or less. There is the guy writing you up who typically visually checks your air filters, belts, wipers, and bulbs to try to sell you that stuff. There is also the guy down in the pit who drains and swaps the filter, and the guy up top who pumps in the new oil from the vat, and tops off fluids.

Regarding 5W20 or 5W30 I honestly think it wont make any difference as long as you use the same thing most of the time. 5W30 does not offer any better protection in warmer climates though, thicker oil in hot weather myth goes back to manufacturers recommendations from when engines and oil were different.
