elantra steering

I know it's benn discussed before but I have had my elantra 2012 gls for 18 months now and I am still not happy with the steering. It requires constant correction at highway speed and if you do a lot of highway driving as I did over the holidays it becomes very tiresome. Not only do you have to keep the car on track the steering is also very stiff and after 200 kilometers you can get quite fed up. I have been driving for many years and have never had this issue with any other of my cars. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?.

I believe Hyundai has made changes to the power steering on your model , ask if there is a reflash available.
+1 On That

I can only speak for my 2013 Elantra but I really like the steering. Just the other day when traveling on a short road trip for Christmas and running @ 70 mph on a 4 lane highway I commented to my wife that the car almost drives itself.

I would definitely inquire about the availability of any updates either mechanical or software.

Subtle difference noted between my 2011 & 2013 re: steering. The 2011 had this pronounced "detent" when centered traveling down the highway. It took a deliberate (small) pull or tug to make it come outta that position. You could actually feel the steering as if it slipped out of a "notched" position. I haven't experienced that with the 2013.

Yep, I had the 2011 and I know they changed it for 2012 and 2013, so I cannot speak on those models. I actually didn't mind my 2011's steering. I did check with my dealership to find out if there were any software updates to change the 2011 steering, but they told me no.

The only time the 2011 was a nuisance, Holly, would be driving long distances...non-stop...like 400 miles between fill-ups. It became bothersome during those times. Almost tiring on my arms.

The wife's Tucson, on the other hand, has the smoothest, easiest, and most resistance-free power steering I have experienced since learning to drive in 1964. I can operate that little dumpling at 70 mph with my pinkie! I would LOVE to have that steering system in Ingrid.

Have you adjusted the steering wheel? There's a lever under there, when loosened, allows you to set the wheel to a more comfortable position. Make sure to retighten the lever when done. Otherwise, your commute will get real interesting. ;)

Light Steering

I don't have any complaints about steering at highway speeds, but certainly at lower speeds, I notice that if I take my eyes off the road, my 2012 Elantra immediately veers from going straight. I always thought it was just me until I read in the Consumer's Reports blurb on the Elantra that one of the 'cons' was 'light' steering.

x2

I had a 90 Stanza with mismatched tires that tracked better!:(

Diesels tend to do well mileage-wise. I miss having my '77 Mercedes-Benz 300D with an extra, aftermarket diesel tank. Fuel capacity on that thing was INSANE, but I ususally didn't fill both tanks, as carrying all that extra weight would dampen the fuel mileage.
