I have 2011 SE, it won't start at all. The car won't start all thou all electricals are working (radio, NAV, Dashboard) but when trying to press the break pedal is hard as a rock. Dashboard computer at times tells me to press the break pedal - but it wont start, it actually turns off when i press the break and hit the start buttom.

HAs any one had this issued before. It happen twice before was able to start it within couple minutes. Now waiting for roadside (1:40 ETA - NYC time: 3 Hours)

The brake must be hard do to no vacuum in the booster. This would happen if the brake is pressed several times without the car running to replace the vacuum that is spent. As long as the brake lights come on that would all you need to start the vehicle. Have someone stand behind the car while you press the brake and see if the lights turn on. I can be as simple as a defective brake light switch.

i imagine this override is off the brake switch. i haven't been under there to see, but, if you could look under the dash and locate the brake switch (they used to be plunger type switches) resting agaist the brake pedal. depress that by hand and try and start it (if you can). just something i would try myself.

I had this happen once in a different car and it required turning the steering wheel for some reason (no clue why). Car wasnt parked on an incline or anything, just couldnt start the car without turning the steering wheel that one time, break pedal was hard as could be, but a simple turn of the wheel and it released.

I was able to notice the reflection of the brake light on/off as i pressed/depressed the pedal.
What i actually had to do because i could not way for 3 hours (ETA) for roadside assistance from Hyundai is rock the car back & forth several times to release the brake pads from the rotors. I poressed the brake pedal again and car try to start as when battery is dying, several more times and care started right up. !!!!

I read a post here that if you press and hold the button in for so many seconds (don't remember how many, could have been 6 or maybe 30?) that the car will start. I have never tried this but it is something to keep in the back of your mind if it ever happens to one of us.

This exact thing happened to me today. I also remembered reading somewhere that you can hold the start button down for 30 seconds and it will start the car. It worked. However, the gear shifter was locked, so I waited for the car to warm up a little bit, then turned it off, and after the second attempt it let me start the car normally. I immediately called the dealer and they told me its a common problem with the 11 Sonata that they're having to replace some brake switch or something and they're going to do it for me first thing tomorrow morning. This is the first problem I've had with my car :(

i figure there is going to be an issue eventually, just hope it happens while under warranty.

Hey lovemysantefe, what happened to the edit? Can't seem to edit my own posts anymore. I am also a fan of the english language. See my post above.
I wrote hear when I should have spelled it here. No biggie but I want the edit feature back.
Administration has placed a 5-minute time limit on the edit feature, mainly because we had problems with people going back and removing all of their posts once they got their answer. I edited your spelling mistake for you and will pass your concerns on to the powers that be. Maybe a 10 or 15 minute limit would be more appropriate.

2011 Sonata won't start

I have a 2011 Sonata SE that won't start. I know it's the brake switch after reading the forums but can you tell me the part number so I can order one. I am deployed overseas so I can't take it into the dealership so I'll have to fix this problem myself. If anyone can tell me the part number, that would be great, and any advice on installing it too would be great! Thanks!

I have had the same problem with the stiff brake pedal. It is only if I don't drive the car for a few days - typically on the weekend. I have never had it not start but I did have it into service for this issue. They replaced the brake sensor thinking that it would fix the issue .... but it still does the same thing if I don't drive for a few days.

This prob happened to me around two months ago. I parked and ran it to get something from a store, and when i came back it happened; Everything would turn on (lights) but it wouldnt let me press the brakes. After a couple restarts it finally worked , and it hasnt happened since... Ill be sure to bring it to dealership next time it happens

Old threads show a Brake Switch problem CAN cause a Code that should allow a "Now" Fix vs. Later. Same notes state "HOLD Start Button In 10-30 Seconds and Car Can Start without Depressing Brake.

I'd Chk for Code ASAP were it me. Good luck.

A Solution!

I just went through one instance of this with my 2 year old Elantra Limited and I talked the GM of the dealership who connected me with the Service Manager and they called corporate because while no codes were coming up, I let them know that they should be able to tell me something. It seems like Hyundai doesn't have any Certified Master Mechanics in their shop. So the Service Manager had to do some work. Oh well. Hold them accountable and have them call Hyundai corporate. Oh and the part...I believe is under $100 and since it is their mess, you don't pay.

The "Cure"?

I was about to get my car towed for the second time due to this problem since I got my car when the mechanic examined it and told me my car was not all the way in park..(I still believe it's a faulty security system issue but what do I know).

Anyway, he turned the key to "unlock", put his foot on the brake, put the car in neutral, then cranked the car and it started right up. I don't know if this will work for everyone but in the few times it's happened since he's examined it, it's never failed.

I have had the same issue repeat itself in the last two days. Only way I was able to get it started was to press the brake, move the shifter into R, N, D, and then back into Park. Starts right up each time. Thinking it is definitely a sensor issue. Dealership tried to tell me my battery might be dead, but no way all the electronics would be on and the car get started with a battery issue. Hope this helps.

Car will not start and brake pedal is hard.

Yesterday I parked to run an errand. When I returned to my car and went to push down the brake pedal, it was hard as a rock and when pushing the start button, the car would not start. I discovered this was a sign that my key fab battery was dead. To get your car started and running until you can replace this battery, push on the frozen hard brake (even though it will not push down much) and push your car start button using the key fab directly (hold the key fab against the start button). This should start the car.

Sound like the vacuum assist is leaking air it happens to me often when I move the car a short distance to park the car. Turn the car off and pump the brakes a few times then try to start it will create the same symptom the pedal will be hard to press but you just have to push really hard and it will start every time. Ask the service manager what the trouble code is for leaking check ball.
