Hello " ohsnapitswillayy ";

Is your car new?
Do you have road side assistance?
If so, I sugest that you call them right away.

If the engine is now cold, and I mean really cold; with some rags on the radiator cap, try removing the cap and check to see if there is any coolant fluid in the radiator.

Do not run the engine if it overheat.

If you can confirm that the coolant is at the prescribed levels, then I can only think of two reasons why your car will reach those temperatures. It's either the water pump isn't working properly or the fan(s) aren't coming on when they're supposed to.

Either way, it's best that you have your dealer look at it. I've gotten stuck in some gnarly jams in the Lincoln Tunnel too but never got those temps. I just stayed slightly below midway where it always is.

Good luck with it and if your dealer has a look at it, let us know what they find.

Yes...get it to a dealer ASAP. My friend had a '94 Chrysler LHS where the radiator went dry and the engine overheated. Cracked the engine block, too. Depending on how far you are from your dealer, I might suggest having it towed there but certainly don't drive it any farther or longer than you have to.

ty for your responses i can see this is clearly a problem i neeed to get checked out ASAP

just for reference can someone give me a list of things (fluid levelsetc.) that i should check, im not exactly a carwhiz more of a cardummy actually and i just want to make one last double check before i take it to the dealer because they have a realll problem with procrastinating, once i took my car in for routine service and it took me almost 2 days to get it back if its something i can take care of id love to do that especially since i know there are a few things that need fixing that im pretty sure are recalls (door handle getting stuck in open position, thermometer reaidng 90 degrees last night at around 12-1 o clock it was probably more like 75 degrees, windshield washer nozzles dont work either no motor whirr nothing) and i want to push those back as far as possible since there is no real danger from them

I have a 2000 Elantra - From the past few days, I have been having an issue with the A/C going down after about 30-45 minutes of continous driving. I have seen a hike in the engine heat (from the meter), but it is no where near the red zone. I shut the A/C off and the engine heat comes down. The A/C works fine once the engine heat comes down. I am sure there is a problem (eureka) :), but not sure what!

Anyone to enlighten me?

Thank you!

hmm thats from the elantra foru, i see that this is a very similar problem to mine except i shut my a/c off and iddnt even try turning it back on once i saw the engine heating up and apparently this only happens for him when his a/c is on (somehow i managed to link the two, i think it had to do with an old cadillac my dad used to have 91 sedan deville that would overheat all the time and i remember him saying its cause we blasted the a/c too much)

DUKE an admin recommends check the front of the radiator for debris that cuold be blocking cool air flow and check engine coolant levels cna someone specify where these are under the hood and any other tihngs i should check

Your coolant resevoir on the far left of engine cold should be between the lines on the tank.
If your coolant is low you are loosing somewere. You might have the leaking freezeplug problem others have stated.
Have you seen any green coolant puddles under the car?
Anti-freeze has a distinctive smell to it if it was leaking.somehow I believe your problem is going to be electrical or mechanical failure.
Sorry but it's got to go to the dealer.

coolant is alll the way full just checked it

so its off to the dealer i guess

well its about time i have a few other things to get fixed and i need to get a touchup pen very badly, 3 days of being parked in the worst spot at a house party has resulted in many durnk people leaning on and scratching my paint all over the place i can count 5 in my head right now... sigh* i wanted to tint the windows and put in a new sound system but my love for the car is waning with every fresh scratch

What you need to do is keep your car away from house parties and stuff like that wouldn't happen. As for the overheating problem, my money is on a faulty sending unit/gauge and the engine is not really overheating. Could also be a sticky thermostat. If it's something beyond that you'll usually be able to really smell the anti-freeze.

You were probably smelling that "rotten egg" smell coming from the cat convertors ... you shouldn't be smelling any anti-freeze smell during break in, or at anytime, unless something's wrong.

Or the burning smell could be related to the coating on the exhaust pipes burning off. The topic has been well covered here if you haven't seen it. Burning Smell

But if you are getting a very high temp gauge reading, don't shut off the engine and then try restarting your car immediately, as I did with my old Elantra. I cracked the block and the car was toast - literally. :(

You have a little overflow reservoir ... located LEFT if you stand in front of the car. This thing should be at least half full. In case it's not you lost coolant. Look underneath the car and check if you have greenish spray underneath (most common at the front axle).
At a COLD car remove the radiator cap (front right) and check if you see coolant. If not buy some anti-freeze and fill it up (better to have more antifreeze than too much water in case you live in a cold area).
Several Sonata's had a loose engine drain plug, yours my have the same problem. Either call road side assistance or hurry to the dealer if he is not more than 10 miles away.

well the problem has subsided without a dealer visit
i was told i could possibly have been just overworking my car
im thinking of flushin out the 50/50 mix and replacing it with all coolant
i was told tihs would help

also is the radiator the thing behind the space in between the foglights?
if so mine really got a beating from bugs and theres a lot of bugs stuck in there
could that be stopping air flow? i mean there mostly mosquitoes and such so i cant imagine how much they could possibly impede airflow

#17 ·
I don't think you solve your problem with replacing your 50/50 coolant with 100%. Actually you better CHECK about it before you do DAMAGE to your car. They designed it to be used as 50/50, so don't try being smart... Or at least check it carefully before you're being smart...

And yes, you need to carefully and thoroughly wash all the dirt out of the front of your radiator. Yes, it does restrict the air flow into your radiator...

...But still, if you ask me, I'd still pay a visit to the dealerrship. A new car should NOT overheat the way yours did... Especially while driving normally, as you described.

Over-heating cars are one of my fears.
Had several over the years, thermostats most of the time.

I remember one time I was sitting at a drive-in getting something to eat.
Engine on, listening to the radio while I was waiting.
Saw the gauge in red, who knows how long it was like that?!?
Called my Dad, he came over with a couple of containers of hot water.
It was enough to get me home.

But the important thing is, don't drive a hot car.
And don't put not hot water in a hot car.
Cracking the block, isn't that what my father said?

So, this is one of the many times the car gets immediate service.
And if was a 2006 car, man, the dealer would get it even faster and they would be giving me a loaner.

So, no first aid.
Go to the hospital.

Hey, what has that got to do with it?
:wink2:

In this day and age, everyone should know or learn as much as they can.
I do alot of research before making decisions.
You know I ask questions.
And ya'lll have shared and taught me alot about my LX.

I do the same with other subjects and other boards.

Actually, one of the guys I work with says I'm more like a guy (of course part of the reason is that my husband does half-**** work around the house.)
Guess starting with being my Dad's helper, not that I can really do any actual repairs or stuff, but I held the flashlight, the other end of the board, etc.
Then my degree is in construction, so went to school with mostly guys.
And now I am estimator and work in the office, the department is all guys.

Okay, back to subject.
How far away is your service department?
Or are there other reasons you won't take your poor car that deserves a good life?

Great advice Suzanna.

I'll procrastinate with a bad battery, leaky tires, oil leak...anything but overheating. That's the quickest way to annihilate an engine. It only takes 5 minutes, and it's a total loss. If the temp gage goes up, the coolant level drops, or I see a leak under the car, I won't rest until I resolve the problem.

I believe it's Johnny Five, and not Number Five. Numbah Five is from Codename Kids Next Door...

P.S. - That's not to say your post wasn't hilarious...I'm still wiping away tears...

P.S.S. - You forgot to put "Can't make it to the dealer cause he's sitting on his seat instead of in it which makes him slide around..." and "He's too tired to go to the dealer because he can't sleep due to the nightmares his seatbelt chimes give him." on your list...

First things first, he does say both quotes (Johnny five and Number five) in the movie - I just did a quick reference at the internet movie database, IMDB (the encyclopedia for movie geeks):
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091949/quotes

And thank you for the P.S.

Your P.S.S. suggestions were quite great as well - you're 1/5 of the way to your own top ten! Cheers matey!
