Brake Pad Thickness

i just took a look at my front brake pads.. it appears as if they are about 1/4" thick... i have also noticed that my rotos are a bit "grooved" (although not extensively gouged)... when i run my finger outward from the center of the rotor, its a tiny bit "bumpy"..

what is correct normal thickness for pads and it is wise to have the rotors TURNED or should they be replaced?

i bought the car used with 27k miles on it, now at 30k (in about 2.25 months or so).. i obviously notice this more on the highway when i have to break from higher speeds...

thoughts?

note - i know as much as if the brakes are squealing or even worse, grinding, then it is REALLY time to replace, but this is obviously not to that stage yet...

ddix,

Anyone feel free to correct me on this but I think brake pads nowadays are manufactured in such a way that they will consistently make a high pitched noise when nearing the end of service life. By consistently, I mean not only in the morning when you first take it out but just about every time you step on the brakes.

Here's a nice article on the subject:

Hope that helps!

Most brake pads today come with wear indicators that will rub on the rotor and make a high pitch squeal. I usually do not wait for this to happen. The best thing to do is change the brakes when the pads are down to 1/16" if they are bonded or 1/8" if they are riveted.
As for the rotors, metallic pads eat away at the rotors making grooves, you will need to turn them so they provide a smooth braking surface.

This should not be the case, at least it has never been in the cars I have owned or worked on. (Way too **** many)

yeah, i thought this would only happen if the calipers were maladjusted?

as for the hight pitched squeak - that is actually what i meant by "squeal".. those are the sensors... i suppose maybe in another couple months i should have the pads replaced (since I dont actually know who the previous driver was or how they drove) and get the rotors turned... the pads may be down to about 1/8" by then...

also, what is anyone's thoughts on ceramic pads v. semi-metallic? (besides less brake dust)....

i know most havent necessarily had to replace their Sonata brakes yet, but given that my car was used, i almost want to start fresh with a couple things so i know how much time i have with them...

I swear by ceramic pads. They last longer, are quiet and no brake dust. That's all I've been using for the last 5 or so years.
