AWD Lock button query

Will paste a post I had on other Tucson Forum which didn't seem to spark any interest or reply. On Chapter 6 (US Manual) under AWD info it stated the info cited below. My actual experience is completely different..green AWD Lock light comes on at any speed and stays on til I hit the button again, no relationship to 37 mph. My thinking AWD Lock itself disengages at 37 mph or so but light only stays on is not the case, as Drive Wheel ft/rr on Menu when selected shows equal fore and aft green bars when the AWD Lock button is activated(center diff locked) and reverts to predominantly FWD with fluctuating rear bars when turned off at any speed, although at 50+ mph the center diff. seems to not consistently lock. Had hoped someone would confirm if their HTRAC Tucson with AWD Lock feature behaved similarly. Again mine is a 2024 Federal Tucson Limited HTRAC HEV.

" Owner's Manual (2024 Tucson Ltd HEV) says AWD Lock will operate at 37 mph or lower when activated. Why does my green AWD Lock icon stay green well above this and will turn ON if I hit the button above 37 mph ? Does the system revert to Auto mode above 37 mph but the icon stays lit or is this function malfunctioning ?

Addendum:

So I brought up the Drive Wheels picture on the instrument screen and cruising along it shows predominantly FWD as expected..when I hit the AWD Lock button, drive wheel bars are now equal..50/50 distribution...1 to 3 bars but always equal, then turn off AWD Lock and returns to non 50/50 picture. Occurs up to 50 mph or so..when I flip AWD Lock button on above that approx. speed, will not show 50/50 distribution consistently after a flutter. Owners Manual I believe also says that the Wheel Drive Menu picture should NOT show up with AWD Lock button activated. "

I'll have to check my '24 Limited HEV tomorrow when I get a chance but based upon your info, I interpret the green AWD light to indicate that it's enabled, not that it's currently active, similar in concept to the High Beam Assist indicator light though this is certainly contrary to the owners manual. I suspect the manual may be incorrect but I'll try to confirm soon.

Thanks..would have thought, like the LKA light, the AWD Lock green light might change to white when "enabled" but not functioning. Also, as I mentioned, the AWD Drive front/rear wheel traction force distribution status IS displayed when my AWD Lock light is ON. Look forward to your experience. Cheers.

Though I only tested up to around 50 MPH, my results are the same as yours, the lock button remained lit solid green, no flickering, even above 37 MPH and the power distribution was 50/50 though I did see a touch of fluttering a couple of times when accelerating, rear wheel bars decreasing to 2 while front wheel bars were at 3. I don't know what to think of it but, FWIW, I've found other glaring errors in the manual (such as how to test the vehicle on a dynamometer, the text contradicts the figure).

Possible causes:
1. Software programming error.
2. Manual error.
3. Software was updated to allow higher speeds but manual was not updated.

To be honest, without a better understanding of the AWD system, I'd be afraid to drive above 35 MPH with AWD Lock enabled. I suspect drive components could overheat. I'm curious to hear an explanation from the service department.

Good reply..my Dealer ,as usual, has no idea !! Since the Auto AWD switches to rear/front at high speeds don't think keeping it "locked" is a problem unless past reports of the rear transfer case splines crapping out suggest other wise. My take is keep her in Auto and nail the Auto Lock at fairly low speed snow, slippery as sh*it conditions. I has posed this question to Hyundai Corporate but no answer after 3 days ("will respond to question in 24hrs") I will be happy just to leave her in "auto" and let this supposedly very sophisticated system take care of business. Your higher speed findings were the same as mine...a flutter.

Thanks for taking the time to check things out.

Wife put AWD lock button on by accident and didn’t realize what it was (or how to turn it off…she stopped to get gas and hoped it would turn off when she turned the car back on but obviously it didn’t) and drove about 35 miles mostly on the highway with the AWD lock button on. Question is…..could this have caused any damage? My thought process is that since she was mostly driving at 55-65 mph the car would have automatically been in AWD auto mode and not locked since she was driving over 37 mph. She claims no weird vibration or smell while driving. Is it safe to assume no damage was done?

I am reading what the manual says differently apparently than you all are. Awd lock is in auto awd mode when the pre set speed is reached, and will return to locked when below that speed. It's turned "on" but functions differently depending on speed.

Perhaps so. We're speculating based upon our observations. When looking at the Drive Wheel Distribution, I expected distribution to the rear wheels to significantly decrease as I exceeded 37 MPH but it remained steady until I reached around 50 MPH at which point it fluttered a bit. My assumption may be incorrect. Perhaps at 37 MPH, the switch to Auto mode doesn't immediately do anything but monitor conditions. I am curious to learn.

Hyundai Corporate Customer Service tried again..this time answer was " could be a misprint".

Got in touch with Dealership's Senior Tech finally..awaiting his answer. Service Advisor's response was " don't push AWD Lock button above 37 mph". If you have Canadian Manual, they say 50 kmh which is well below 37 mph.

Will pass on any new takes as I get them.

No reply thus far...

Senior Tech at Dealer says "AWD Lock light does not go OFF above 37 mph but system does disengage".. I mentioned the fact that Drive Wheel Distribution image shows equal ft/rr wheel bars above 37 mph which reverts to ft bias bars when I push AWD Lock Button OFF (above 37 mph)...."....crickets...."...and then "don't use it above 37 mph" advice again.

As an aside, my gas cap has a "no lead", PB with slash, symbol. Last time sold in US was 1996 per Google. No tire pressure requirements or octane needed info. on gas flap but a reminder on cap not to use leaded gas...priceless !!!

I haven't had a car with tire pressure on the gas cap door for many years. VW (ours) has the no lead warning also our Nissan does not. Leaded gas is still sold but it would be beyond rare at a gas station. Though till just a couple of years ago a Sunoco Station had it in sealed containers for sale in Ocala. Maybe others do?
