Antifreeze smell

Has anyone else noticed the smell of radiator fluid after driving?

I've had my car for about 2 months, and I kept noticing the stench of radiator fluid stinking up my garage after driving a while.

I finally figured out that some Einstein at Hyundai decided to use a glycol-based windshield wiper fluid! After draining the stupid stuff and replacing with regular windshield wiper fluid, the stench is now gone.

Has anyone else had this problem, or is this just my dealer?

It's blue and looks like washer fluid, it just smells like antifreeze. I think if they mistakenly mixed green antifreeze it wouldn't look blue anymore. I don't know why anyone would use this stuff on purpose, because it makes you think there is a problem with your radiator.

I found a few reports on different Internet forums where people actually brought their car to the dealer several times to look for a radiator "leak", and then eventually they figured out it was the washer fluid.

Hey, guys, you're experiencing exactly what some of us sedan owners worried ourselves sick over and went thru. It's a normal smell. Nothing to worry about! Go forth and have some GT FUN!!!!

With all the solvents used in the making of the various plastics, coatings, fabrics.. it take a good bit for solvents to fade away.

Keep my car in a garage and the wife always said it smelled like antifreeze when it was new. I also smelled it a couple times, very noticable in a closed garage. Forgot all about it until I just read this, so the theory about it being something that burns off over the first couple weeks sounds reasonable. Never a drop of anything on the floor that would indicate any kind of leak.

Is it some kind of antifreeze additive? Hyundai won't tell me.

Smelling it too. Hadn't had to use it too often because it rains here a lot. But recently our flowering mazzard cherry tree has been covering my car like crazy. So I used the windshield washer fluid (in large amounts) to clean my windshield while I was driving. Next thing you know, I smell coolant. So I thought my coolant was leaking. Checked everywhere, waited for the car to cool (and check the coolant level.) It all seemed fine.
I started to scoop out all those **** flower leaves from the **** cherry tree (I hate this tree but it's next to my driveway and in its flowery season for only a month). At my desk, I could still smell "antifreeze" so I smelled my hand that I used to scoop out those leaves. Sure enough, it smelled of coolant (even though I hadn't touched any coolant that morning.) So I deduced the only place I could have come in contact was when I was scooping out those **** flowers from the "reservoir" between the windshield and the hood (where the wipers sit). Then I finally opened up my hood (car is still only 9 months old and I had no need to open the hood saving that to Hyundai CVT's for oil changes) and smelled the WW reservoir. Wreaks of antifreeze WW fluid. It's still blue but figured it some kind of additive. So gonna take it to the dealers, have them drain it, and put in regular WW fluid. But first, gotta wash out them **** leaves!
