This was the same line of thinking I was following. I noticed that when I disconnected the Lane Assist camera (behind the rearview mirror) and turned on the car, the dashboard gave me an error, saying that I should check the LKA camera. This supports what you are saying. The ECU polls what's at the end of the branches and decides what to do (my guess). It is possible that there is a major mode switch for the software (i.e. set global config flag to XYZ based on trim).

It's $70 to buy the part. Could be fun to try out.
Any Progress on the Drive mode switch research?

I highly doubt it. Drive modes would be programmed in to the ECU. Additionally, the car wouldn't know how to display the drive mode on an SE.
well actually it is porogrammed already in ECU, I have 18 elantra and it "gliched' before and then ECO mode was enabled, and then after a while switched to SPORT and then back to ECO again. that's why I was wondering the same thing. PLUS I already installed cruise control buttons on my wheel and it is fully functional without changing any wiring, just plug n play.
