When I bought my Sonata, it only had one fob(confirmed with dealer that only one fob came with trade-in), so likely the seller sold it on his own or had lost it. Anyway, I ran into a situation where I left my wife with the car and no key and was a big run-around to get us straightened out. I bought a new OEM(not like OEM or refurb) fob and blank key. I know it requires a proper programmer or whatever to program, but when asking locksmiths, they say they need a PIN and that is additional charge to get. Is there a way for me to get the PIN on my own or will Hyundai give it to me?

From what I have knowledge (I worked for a locksmith yrs back-and still talk to her), they have to pay for the access to the data base. I don't recall anything about a PIN. Since they are licensed and you have the VIN...I think that's all they need. I can PM you a phone number if you'd like to talk to them to clarify. I don't think they can program a FOB, just the smart key.

I meant the smartkey when I said FOB. The guy I got a quote from said about $20 to get the PIN. As I looked into some manuals for the computer used by dealers to program the keys, there is a spot to put in a 6-digit PIN and if it is failed 3-times then it locks it out and there's a process to unlock with keeping key in car for an hour or something.

But anyway, I think the PIN is used when programming the car to accept the smartkey.

I ve been there in the past so I was not gonna get screwed from dealer by not getting two fobs...I told them it only has one fob and sales guy says yeah...and nothing...so later the sales manager came over while waiting for something and asked how as was going i said good except for one problem...I need another key fob..he looks and say car only came in with one...hmmmm hold on...goes in the back comes out with another one and says here you go...make sure they program it for you before you leave with it or they will want to charge you for it.

So I did. dammit! the guys went back grabbed me a new one and gave to me....for that reason alone I have gone back and bought more cars from them. its the small things that makes a difference!!!!!!!!!!!!! That follow through!!!!!!!!!!!

not MY problem your car came in "incomplete" I want it complete if Im gonna guy it!!

Ya, I got a deal on it and not from a Hyundai dealer, so no "extra" Hyundai parts around. Upon further research it looks like there are lots of sites/apps that will do this and you pay per use basically. Looks like most it is ~ $25-$30 for 5 uses of the tool. I guess $20 is his markup for being a locksmith and having access to those sites. Question is, if I walk into a Hyundai Dealer, will they give me the PIN?

I had only one key fob since owning the car got a autel 900 and was hoping to program it myself I did have the pin # lost it I have called four or five dealers in my area and get the same story they don't sale or give the pin number because of security reasons and their techs are the only ones who have access to that information and they are not allowed to give it out either called Hyundai headquarters who said they don't have access to that info you can try the dealers all of it is just bunch of crap...

Service Mgr, advisors, techs, parts dept all have clearance to obtain key code and SMARTKEY PIN codes.

What you should do is visit dealer, have ID, vehicle title / registration all with matching name and address to show you legal owner

That how it is for walk in that wants key cut. Car in shop for service, no problem
