Huyndai does not want to give you a new engine so they will eventually claim that it's normal to burn oil. Heard this all the time.

How much oil are they adding, if they are adding 1 liter or more in 1500km I would think that's excessive consumption.

 

I checked it myself before heading to the dealership, it was under half way line between the low line and the full.

 

My 2016 Sonata (55k miles) burns oil at a rate of 1/2 qt per 2,500 miles. I use full synthetic 5W-30 as well. Hyundai here in the USA calls all oil consumption "normal" unless it reaches around 1 qt per 1,000 miles. So basically just have to check it in between oil changes and top off as needed until it is very excessive...

 

You have to figure out how much oil your car is burning. If it burns 1/2 quart every oil change, then no big deal. If you find yourself having to refill a quart every 1000 miles then that's different. Either get rid of it or if you want, you could try using Lucas oil stabilizers to see if it helps.

...or you could flush that kind of money down the toilet, with the same result! Use full synthetic if they decide they won't replace it...on mine it improved oil burning to some degree. It doesn't work quickly...takes weeks or months to improve by freeing the coked-up piston rings.

I recently noticed my 2017 sonata GLS burning more oil than it should. I took it to the dealership a couple months back and all they did is more put more oil inside of it and telling me to come back after 1500 km. I went back and they again they put more oil and told me to come back after 1500 km again.
I asked why do they need to do this again and they claimed that they need to do it multiple times to find the issue.

Is this normal?

I had the same problem. I was using a liter every 3600 km , (2,236 miles). My dealer that I bought the car from said this is acceptable. Phoned Hyundai Canada they told me the same thing. Shortly after my car went into limp mode. Had It towed to a different dealership. They helped me out and ordered a long block for me. 3,000 km on it so far so fingers are crossed. Think it's a crime what Hyundai is trying to get away with, they know they have a problem but do little to help the customer. keep trying at other dealerships till you find one that helps.

 

Exactly - no car should EVER be required to have 5+ quarts added between oil changes, which is every 7,500 miles per Hyundai. No more than adding 1 qt MAX between oil changes...MAYBE 2 qts should be considered "normal"

 

I know they are 3 to 4 times the price of comparable products! It's all in your head...unless you're a dealer...then it goes in the bank!

 

Then list the "comparable" products for the OP's benefits.

On a side note , My Hyundai dealership that sold me the car never informed me about the extended warranty that Hyundai has on this motor,(2.4L for me) is no longer 100,000km , it is now 200,000 km on the engine block, since April og 2019.

 

The problem with Hyundai engine is what holding me back from considering a Hyundai, even the 2020 Sonata. Even tho they have made good on the issue (only after much bad publicity), I still don't want to think about dealing with it if it ever happens to me. So while this 200K warranty sounds good, it still doesn't persuade me unless it is absolutely sure the problem is no longer there (completely redesigned engine for another generation of Sonata).

 

The 2020 is a new engine. no one can guarantee you one way or another at this point.

 

The only reason why a Sonata would trigger my interest is b/c you could get a midsize sedan (aka Sonata) for $8K less than a Camry. If their prices are the same or not much different, then it's a no brainer.

 

Well I think the GDI fear of mucking up the intake valves to where it impacts driveability might have peaked , sure people cite early examples BMW, Audi, and walnut blasting but I'm not hearing that it is occurring that often in recent years and there are a lot of GDI only engines being produced.
I've chosen not to do any of the intake valve cleaning , will see how that plays out over time. Wonder what percent of owners with GDI engines bother with the cleaning.
But there are differences beside price alone in makers, one has to choose what is important and fits their needs. RAV4 is arguably an average SUV, but like Camry it consistently leads in it's sales categories.

 

Same issue with my 2017 Hyundai Sonata. 'Loosing' so much oil my oil light is coming on between consistent/on time oil changes. First, my mechanic had us replace a PVC valve stating that was the only thing he could imagine that may be leaking oil. Then we discovered the 'hairline oil pan crack' (see that forum for more info), basically dealership blamed mechanic, so we paid to replace the oil pan and now the oil light just came on again and we haven't even drove 1000 miles. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm not burning the oil. I never see drips under the car, but I'm also told there is some kind of pan or something underneath that would catch any drips. The dealership has stated there's no recalls about this issue so I didn't think they'd help with the issue at all, however I'm only at 84,000 miles, so maybe I need to push a little harder and see if it's covered under a warranty instead? Any advice is appreciated. My sisters older Hyundai Santa Fe engine just locked up due to oil issues where he light wasn't coming on and she's basically screwed - Hyundai won't help at all. I'm close to getting rid of my sonata before I end up in her position.
