2013 Accent WORST MPG !

Sadly I am finding my 2013 Accent GLS (first new car-and last) to be a real POS. I am getting 16-25 MPG - city/hwy combined ! Sorry Hyundai but you have already ruined your reputation and now, 3 months later, my case is just hanging. There is something wrong with this car and if your so-called "checks" find nothing, well, you need to replace the car! Is anyone else out there having similar issues?

Also, the loose steering is seriously getting on my nerves and I know this is a known issue, but is there any way to resolve it ?

Thanks for listening.

Lots of factors can attribute to poor milage and the usual is the drivers input and environment, is San Fran as hilly as I've seen?
You never mentioned how many miles on your Accent, Hyundai's in my experience take a long time to work in. The steering, did you not test drive it first ?
You fail to mention if you have checked the tires pressures etc as well.

What did you drive before this car? Is this your first experience with electric steering? Mpg will get better, but even then takes a bit of driver management to get 30+ combined.

Have you tried manually calculating the mpgs, and compared it to the readouts? Every car I've owned and rented the ave mpg readouts were always off. Also, your driving in a city that's in foothills, it takes more energy to move 2400lbs uphill, add stop and go city driving to that your mpgs are going down the toilet. I wonder what Prius owners get for mpgs in that city, I'm sure many complain.

The steering is one part of the car I'm not fond of.. That and the not so cold AC. I read about the steering in a few car reviews before I went to look for an Accent and I took a test drive on the highway to make sure it was acceptable. It wasn't perfect, but it was acceptable. I can't drive on the highway with one knee like and hold it straight like I've been able to do in other cars I've driven.. (Of course maybe this is a GOOD thing :) )

Otherwise I'm happy with mine. I rarely get under 30 MPG (80% hwy, 20% city -- hand calculated)..

There's a web site where people post their MPG results at every fill. Browsing that will give you a good idea of where you stand... 2013 Hyundai Accent MPG Reports | Fuelly The results of 25 2013 accents are logged there. There are many more if you search for the 2012 model.

I would think SF would be very tough on any car's MPGs. Maybe a small car with a much bigger, torque-ier engine would suffer less from the hills than an Accent. But it would be tough to find one that is the same subcompact kind of car that meets that criterion. Many of the engines in the Accent's class are 100cc smaller. I'd be interested in comparing fuel economy with a Honda Fit owner or a Mazda2 owner in your same area, if I lived there.

I don't doubt you are experiencing what you say you are, not for a second. Climbing hills in the Accent is challenging, and I can watch it slagging my MPG average in real time. I have some steep hills around here but it's not like SF where they just go on forever. But I think that this is just the nature of small displacement engines in modern cars with all the weight of today's modern conveniences and safety features. They can get extremely good mileage going a steady speed on the level, but they will struggle up hills and slurp down gas like a big carburetor fed V8 doing it.

wow, i drive almost 100% in the city and the worst i get is 20-23. It sounds like there is something wrong with your car.

Something may be wrong but hyundai isn't the only company goofing on the numbers dodge dart says 59 mpg but a lot of people are only getting 35mpg how's that for a difference , accent is rated 40 hwy 30city. Honda , ford , Toyota they all lie its about selling cars not making people happy sadly

Not a single Dodge Dart on our lot says 59mpg . Where the heck did you hear/see that satement? Highest ever claimed is 41mpg averaged highway testing on window stickers and advertisements.

Your info is WAY off...

After 100 fillup, I have no complaints. Highest was 46 and never been below 33. See below for running average. Honestly if you hate the car that much get rid of it, its not worth being miserable over, lifes too short for that kind of crap.

I see you're in Vancouver BC.

While Canada hasn't used the gallon for over 30 years, they still list MPG on the window stickers along with liters per 100km.. They compute MPG using the old imperial gallon which is almost 20% larger than the US gallon.

Not only that, but transport Canada uses a different method to determine MPG.. It's not anywhere near as accurate as the U.S. EPA method. My Accent had 59 MPG Hwy on the window sticker.. That works out to:

CDN MPG = 58.86
US MPG = 49.01
Liters/100km = 4.80

FWIW, I've never come anywhere near those figures on the highway...... But I have hit the US rating of 40 MPG on occasion

Out of interest, here is a photo of the sticker that was on my car:

May be true that 'they all lie' but like others in my situation, I was fooled by the Marketing and the whole debit card thing is a joke, considering we pay more for gas here than anywhere ekse. Also, although SF is hilly and I live on a hill, most of my driving is on flat streets, along with 15-50 mile Freeway trips. Still all I am saying is Hyundai lied, the EPA copped out, and if 'there is nothing wrong' welll, I want to feel 'Assured by Hyundai Assurance' and they should trade it in already.

Those "errors" were corrected before the '13 models hit the streets I think.

In addition to that, there are a LOT of us on here with various models who DO get at or near the (revised) advertised numbers.

And they ARE just estimates, after all.

But in the end, everybody's situation is unique and you are certainly entitled to think whatever you please. Once in a great while we hear about a car with a real, correctable problem.......like dragging brakes for instance.

On the Malibu forum, we even had one guy who couldn't understand that time spent idling in a traffic jam or time spent warming up his car in the winter time all went AGAINST his MPG numbers. Several of us tried for a couple of weeks but he just couldn't seem to grasp the concept that using fuel while not moving still counted in the calculation. ;)

To the OP, I'm sorry you're getting such low mileage. I would consider taking it into the dealership for an inspection as that seems really low. I've never gotten below 30, even in really cold weather with frequent stops. I suspect something is wrong with your car that can and should be fixed.

I have taken it in and they said "nothing is wrong with it" which is why i am so pissed off. Next stop is I think I will drive it to Irvine, the Hyundai USA Headquarters and stand there with a bull-horn until someone listens to me and at least attempts to make me a happy customer.

I average 35 miles per gallon. This morning filled up 10 gal and clocked last tank and went 350 aprox miles...2 thumbs up for hyundai for me.. I drive a good mix of city and highway and usually on highway its early in morning and I am running late to work so kinda like a zoom zoom :)

Second issue is the acceleration , or rather lack there of sometimes when i am , say cruising in traffic around40-50 MPH and then can go Freeway spped of 65-75. When I press down on the gas pedal , sometimes it seems to not accelerate until I hit he passing gear and the RPM's go above 5. Is this normal? I never have had a 6 speed automatic so I know I just may have to get used to the transmission, but sometimes I'll switch the shift-tronic over while slowly cruising at say, 35-40, and it's already in 5th or sometimes 6th gear. Is this normal? Lastly, I have had 3-4 occasions on city streets (once on the freeway- going around 40) where i've had to break quickly (slam on the breaks) and what I am concerned about is that the car went bump, bump, bump. I think twice I also noticed (even though i was on a relatively smooth street) that the traction control went off. Has anyone else had this issue?
You have to the egg between your foot and the pedal if you want to get the best MPG.
and
This does make it look like its your driving style and location that is causing your problems.

I got a manual and I rarely get above 4 grand and almost always keep it under 3 grand.

I live in the Bay Area and there is nothing different about your car then any other. You are in a major city with a stoplight on every corner. I think you have a case to complain. I would be really mad if I lived in SF and had this car. There is no way that Hyundai should have advertised 30 and the low estimate in tiny letters on the sticker said 24. I don't doubt that your getting in the teens while city driving around the SFC. This is the lowest I've gotten. Personally I think Hyundai owes us some real money back.

I agree with you and I also drive on 101 and 280 and the only time I get more than 25 MPG is when i drive 50 miles + in one trip. It is unacceptable and after talking to a few agencies, I am now going to try One more time with DCDG in San jose to make a trade or something. If that does not work, Lemon Law. PERIOD.

I spoke with the MPG bullshit department today and she said the next step is the Federal Arbitration .. (some agency with the name Federal) in it.

Anyway, If all else fails I will go down to Irvine (after I contact a few more consumers in the same situation whom I have found) and see what we can do. If not, well then I am leaving my doors OPEN :)

So I was contacted by Hyundai Executive Communications today after Tweeting to them about my dissatisfaction. I am now awaiting a call-back to schedule a "fuel consumption test" along with an engineer to look at the car. We shall see what happens and I will report back.

I hope you get some answers with this, but I just wanted to toss out a few factors that may be putting your vehicles mileage below acceptability. Quality of fuel(most likely winter-blend now), air-quality(no-offense, but CA air quality as a whole sucks) tire pressure(you should be at 36-38 psi for optimum mpg), and lastly, your driving style(usually ties in well with your age). Again, no offense, but these factors in conjunction would put you well below EPA estimates for this vehicle. What mpg for this vehicle are you hoping to get? Remember, estimated low of 24 for city, and 42? for hwy. would you be happy getting 24-26mpg combined? You may want to conduct some more personal tests with your car before anyone from Hyundai comes to conduct any tests on it. If they run a tank of fuel off your car in the area where you live and come back with 27 mpg or so, they will chuckle, and leave. You will have to be able to prove that you have tried everything you know to get mpg's. Have you??

As much as I am skeptical about the OP's driving habits, even if he/she was gunning it at every light he/she should still see higher mpg than 19. That is atrocious!

To the OP, good luck with your complaint. Please report back, I hope you can get this resolved. I am more than happy with my mileage and you should have a car where you can feel the same.

Take poor driving habits combined with poor fuel quality and poor air quality as well as low tire pressure, you might see lower than 19 mpg in this car!

My average MPH at each fillup is around 40-43 on my weekly commute according to the cpu.

Ah. Thanks. As expected...that makes sense that you are rocking the MPG then. The problem is people who live in areas and have commuting habits, not driving habits, that equal low average speeds, mid to low 20's. This makes total sense to me now. For those of you who live in neighborhoods (even city/sub neighborhoods) that allow you to maintain say over 35 for extended periods of time (say 5 minutes or more) between stoplights and/or your driving on the highway and maintain speeds over 35 FAR more often and for a longer period of time than you doodle around town under 20 you are going to get those good numbers.

My average MPH is 36 and has never been reset since I got it. Just over 21000 miles so far, And I have gotten anywhere from a low of 35 MPG to a 41.6 MPG per tank. The Low being winter driving and the high on a long trip in the summer.

This car is built for rolling along.

Jay if you get them to drive your car, go with them. Make sure to point out the steering. Yours sounds like it needs a alignment & your dealer should at the minimum check your alignment. And make them give you a copy of what it is.
