Hi all and Merry Christmas !

Just replaced a tail light bulb on my wife's i10 all good I thought but not so !

The nearside tail light is fine and works when the brake is depressed as it should / Usual standard dim then bright when brake pedal depressed

The offside tail light is stuck on the brake light intensity all the time so when the brake is depressed it just stays on maximum intensity

The high level brake light stays off all the time

Any ideas ?

Thanks !

The Hyundai Owner's Manual for a 2010 i10 indicates that the rear brake/tail-light bulb should be P21/5W 'bayonet-fitting' type. This is a twin-filament bulb, with the 5-watt filament relating to the tail-light and the 21-watt filament relating to the brake-light.

Although it would not be easy to do, there is the (small) possibility that you have fitted the replacement bulb wrongly (ie. with the bulb's base rotated through 180-degrees) so that the 21-watt filament is acting as the tail-light and the 5-watt filament as the brake light. This would mean that, when you turned the car's lights on, the rear light would shine brightly (as the 21W filament was being used) and - when the brake-pedal was depressed - although the 5W filament should now come into play, it would not be apparent while the 21W filament was illuminated. (This should be easy to check by depressing the brake-pedal when the the car's lights are not switched on.)

It might be helpful to know what prompted you to change the bulb. Was the bulb you replaced not working at all, or was the offside tail-light working, but not the brake-light (or vice versa)?

Is your car's high-level brake-light LED or bulb type? And was that working OK before you changed the brake/tail-light bulb?

Thanks very much that’s a great reply I’ll check when I get home.

The taillight was out I never checked the brake ( doh ! )

Again never checked the high level it’s not led.

I never realised the bulb could be fitted incorrectly and what you describe really does sound like what I’ve done !

I’ll report back this evening !

Thank you and Merry Christmas !

As you have high level not working and other light on check for broken wires going through to top of hatch. These often break and then touch each other causing lamps not to work and others getting a feed from other wires which are broken.

Thanks guys just to update I turned the bulb round and that fixed it lol ! All these years I have been changing those bulbs I must have put them in the right way every time !

High level is still not working does it have its own fuse or could putting the bulb in the wrong way have somehow blown those bulbs ?

It could of course be the wire but coincidental it stopped working at the same time.

cheers !
