2007 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 liter 81K miles
I currently live in Germany and moved here three years ago from FL (USA). I brought my Santa Fe over here from the states and I have a warranty on the vehicle but the German Hyundai dealership will not honor the warranty because it is an American Spec. Vehicle.
The Issue:
When I turn the key the engine turns over but the car will not start. The battery is good and the starter is engaged and is working. This started to happen a few months ago and was very sporadic. After trying to turn the car on a few more times it would start then everything would be fine. The car would run perfectly for a few days. Then it would happen again every week or so at first then every few days. And now the car is in my garage and I can not get it started for the past few days now. When this started I had the check engine light come on and received the following codes:
P2106 - Throttle actuator control system forced limited power
P1295 - Manufacture Enhanced DTC Found
P0638 - Throttle actuator Rng/Perform BNK1
The Background / Troubleshooting Completed:
After having the dealer here in Germany look at the car they were a little confused at first because it is an American spec vehicle and they don't normally get cars that are not European spec vehicles. So after some lost in translation and explaining the best I could what the problem was they looked into it and told me that the Fuel Pump needed to be replaced. And/or I need a new Key made because there is an anti theft chip in the key that could have gone bad.
They wanted me to order the part because they said since it is an American spec vehicle it would take them up to 4 months to have in shipped to the dealer and it would cost almost double the price. So I called a dealership in the states and spoke to the service dept. and a mechanic. I gave them the details of the problem and the error codes and told them that I needed a Fuel pump. They told me that the Fuel Pump is most likely not the issue and that from the error codes it sounds like I need a Throttle Positioning Sensor (TPS) and this should fix the problem. Plus this part is like $60 instead of $360 for the Fuel Pump. So I told the German dealership what I found out and decided to change the TPS first and get a new key as well (the key was already ordered at this point) to see if that fixes the problem.
The dealer ship changed the TPS and gave me the new key plus changed out the fuel pump rely switch then cleared the error codes and the car worked fine for a few days. Then the car started to do the same thing again.
The error codes came back and the car would again give me problems starting very sporadically and after trying a few times it would work fine for a while then out of the blue not start. It would happen in the morning when the car is cold or it would happen in the afternoon after driving someplace and the car was warmed up. I could not find a common reason that was occurring that would cause the car to act this way.
So I decided to change the Fuel Pump and rule that out of the equation. I ordered it and changed it out my self. Everything went smoothly with replacing the Fuel Pump assembly and the car worked fine for two days then the problem came back. I was driving it and stopped at a store for 15 min then got back to the car and it would not start. After messing with it for a while and had to leave it for a few hours and went back to it then it started up again. Now it is in my gauge and I have not been able to get it started again in the past few days. I have the Check Engine light on again and I'm waiting to get them read to see if the codes are still the same.
Recent Parts that have been replaced:
- Battery 6 months ago
- Serpentine Belt 6 months ago
- Damper Pulley 6 months ago
- Starter 6 months ago
- TPS 3 weeks ago
- Fuel Pump rely switch 3 weeks ago
- Fuel Pump 1 week ago
Additional Troubleshooting done :
- Disconnected battery and let sit for a while to reset error codes. Problem still there.
- Checked the wires and made sure that they are all connected and in good shape for the fuel pump.
- Re-seated the fuel pump rely switch
- Held gas peddle all the way down when trying to start.
- kicked tiers and yelled swear words at car repeatedly.
Has anyone else that owns a Hyundai Santa Fe had these issues before?
Any help on what I should be looking at next?
