Rolled over the other day. Bought the car with around 20k on it in Feb 2008. Only thing I've done is tires and replaced the front rotors with EBC and pads with Akebono.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beyxYo1EjXo

Maintanence:

51k tranny flush dealer
76k coolant flush dealer
84k replaced front rotors with EBC and pads with Akebono, bled all 4 wheels and put about 3/4 a pint back in reservoir
99k power steering fluid, Denso Iridium Spark plugs, PCV Valve, drain and fill tranny, radiator, Seafoam intake and Seafoam in gas tank.

I've been using Mobil 1 5W20 since around 54k and I have not had to add any oil. Engine is dry, tranny is smooth.

Maybe others can post who are in this 100k plus club what problems if any they've had and what major maintenance they have performed on their Sonata.

Excellent economy!

I like your sensible maintenance schedule!

I intend to get a coolant flush at ~50K, tranny flush at ~105K. spark plugs at ~100K.

Serpentine belt and brake pads as needed, probably ~65K. Rotors should last the life of the car.

Surprised my battery is still going strong. They usually only last 3.5-4yr.

I use Hyundai recommended oil, whatever's on sale. I intend to keep the car 8-10 years, and 90-110K miles.

I'm shooting for cost of ownership of ~$1400 per year over 10 years, or ~$1750 over 8 years.

Change your battery if its OEM! I changed it After a year of having it on my car, that battery was three years old. Be proactive and don't let it die on you. Went to Wal Mart bought a 72 month I think, for around $62.00. Better warranty and better price than auto parts store, plus a 2-3 year free replacement can't beat it. It was an ever start. I wanted peace of mind knowing battery was good, 3 years on an OEM battery is pushing it. Why wait for it to die and strand you?

I only use the Hyundai oil filter cheaper than the autoparts stores filters. Oil changes average 10-12k miles. On this oil change I wasn't planning alot of miles after relocating to a new job so I used regular Mobil 1 5W20 instead of Mobil1 1 5W20 EP(Extended protection). Around 8k I will change oil and filter.

If you get new tires GET AN ALIGNMENT! Around 70k I had two replaced, and then the other two replaced around 76k miles. Well they slowly started wearing out on the shoulder, got an alignement but tires have some vibration issues because they wore wrong, once they start they can't be corrected. Old tires were wearing fine so I figured I didn't need it. I bought Summitomo Touring LST. Better grip then Michelens and handle better. Tread depth is still good a couple of them the shoulder may wear out prematurely.

PS changed my battery around 50-60k

A battery will usually give you a clear warning before it strands you. My batteries have
averaged ~3.5 years, and I've never once been stranded.

At 3 years old, if a battery starts to crank slowly on a cold morning, change it immediately.
In all of my experiences, there was no prior warning just a dead battery or no start condition. On my bus, which is 24 volt and uses two 12 volt batteries, if one battery or both get weak you will hear it. Before I replaced my battery the car started fine but failed a load test.

Bob your Battery is 5 Years old. Drive into a WalMart today, only $69. Flush at 105K? Not banking on the 100K Power Train coverage I take it?
$1750 per Year for 8 Years of Ownership? Does that include Gas too? The reason I ask I am spending less than S75 per Year for Hyundai Factory Service. The BIG 30K Service is coming up. $214 and that is a A/T Flush/Oil Change and a Million Point Inspection. Time for a Coolant change too!

Just re-read your post. I know you like my maintenance schedule it is sensible, but why don't you follow it? :)

At 60k my fuel mileage started to drop a few gallons.

I wouldn't wait that long to change transmission fluid, its a vital fluid!

Serpentine belt as need, still have my OEM looking great no cuts no play.

Rear rotors and pads good condition, both OEM. How ever, front pads and rotors are garbage on these cars. Rotors I didn't attempt to turn them bought new EBC high quality, rotors and Akebono pads were only half worn at 84k when I changed. I got tired of the vibration and like to do things the right way.

Replace that battery!

How often do you change your oil? Mine run every 10-14k, this oil change will be 8k because I'm only using the regular Mobil 1 synthetic not the EP. I've been using Mobil 1 since 50kish mark, I don't use or leak any oil between changes.

I'm planning on having this car at least another 100k miles, I have changed all the fluids, I really need to bleed the brakes and get rid of more old fluid and put fresh fluid in.

Honestly I think plain and simple Bob is slowing down. Old age Now if you want to talk Tractors, well watch out.

I would suggest to all, follow the minimum recommended Service requirements for your Area. We are reading many

Denial of Warranty Claim posts. Coolant MUST be replaced for the first time at the 5/60 Mark, and then every 2/24.

A/T Fluid needs to be replaced at 30K in severe areas, 60 in other areas, although we do see it listed as 105K too.

I live in a double severe area. The Battery is a no brainer. I was surprised to read our Mod's reply. I learned most of what

I now know from Batteries here. I thought Bob's Wife's Sonata was maintained per that Hyundai Warranty agreement we signed.

The one that promises original owners One Hundred Thousand Miles of Engine and Transmission coverage. I too am planning on keeping

this Car longer than any other Car I have ever owned, and would like to keep the Warranty in force if possible. $19.95 Dealer Oil Changes

every 3000 Miles just have not been a factor at all. The 30K, 60K, and 90K service prices get progressively more expensive though!

Happy Motoring!

Hey Hugo good to see you again. Last time I was in Green, but its just a color. I'm still #1 though :trophy:

I thought you have a whole stable of Cars at your disposal if I remember correctly :innocent:

You're probably right, it's time for the battery to fail, so I'm on high alert.

My owner's manual states to change the ATF at 105K, which is 5K beyond the power train warranty anyway.

$1750 per year for 8 years is nothing but the purchase price of the car and unscheduled repairs. I guess I
should add in the 30K service, which cost me around $85. So make that $1760.

I was surprised to read our Mod's reply.
I go by the owner's manual. This is my wife's commuter car. It has the best possible driving conditions.
No dust, no heat, no racing, no passengers or trailers. So I go by the book for the least severe conditions.

Her last car went 11 years and 100K and never spent a night in the shop. I guess we spent around $200
in unscheduled maintenance. That car is now 15 years old, and we still see it around town. That's what
I'm shooting for for the Sonata, and what I will be shooting for for the next one.

Want to hear about my truck?

During your 80,000 miles of ownership, did you have any problems? Did your car to go into the shop for any reason other than maintenance? It appears you had no problems. If true, I think this is a statistic Hyundai should promote. I keep knocking on wood, but so far my car has been 100% trouble free.

If I bought a used car, I would like to buy it from someone like that me changed fluids. I hate to look at a car and see nasty brake fluid, dirty air filter, tires that were never rotated. Gives me peace of mind. I write down the date and mileage and what I perform in my owners manual. I don't bother saving receipts they just fade away stupid thermals, besides warranty is gone. All anyone has to do is look at fluids and drive car. I like to be proactive. I think its BMW or Mercedes that say don't change your tranny fluid its a life time fluid, but they do have tranny failures and mechanics even encouraging people to change because its bogus.

My dad is one of those people that say tranny fluid doesn't need changing, neither does coolant. At 70k his trans was slipping in his 99 Saturn Sw2 4 cylinder wagon. Changed the fluid tons of sediment/debris drained out, these cars have a spin on filter changed that magnet covered in metal. Anyhow, changed the fluid regularly at 126k car is still going strong. I've changed coolant on it once at 70k too, about a thousand miles ago car over heated cooling fan was dead water pump was leaking and radiator split. Replaced fan motor, radiator, water pump(even though it was just the gasket leaking), thermostat(even though it was working and leaking) and the upper/lower radiator hoses, flushed it and put fresh coolant and distilled water(not tap water). While doing the radiator once again changed the tranny fluid and filter, there is a drain plug on the car and the filter spins on to the side of tranny very easy to do.

Long story short, at least drain and fill your transmission. Think of it as a mini oil change, $30.00 bucks covered the fluid, I did reuse my old washer. If I were to give you a good example, look at this 1 million miles on a transmission:

Nope. Went for the brake switch recall, that stopped turns on my ABS/ESC light at random. That's it. I only went to the dealer between 20k-50k for oil changes every 4-5k miles. 50k went for a tranny flush. 75k coolant flush. Havn't been there for anything.

I'd like to see a Chrysler do that lol. I had to drive a rental Dodge Avenger while my Sonata was getting body work done, worst car ever. Even though it was a 4 cylinder my Sonata got the same or better fuel mileage as a V6. So happy driving my Sonata.

What's all this panic about the battery? Why do you change it before it's dead? It's not a maintenance item.
I just changed a battery in my Explorer. It's 2003 model and the battery was original.

I've told you all before, my '93 Mazda MPV had a battery that I could remove the caps, and refill with tap water. Got NINE YEARS out of her!!! Panasonic was her name. not gonna try that with this one.
Shouldn't it be distilled water?? :00000732:
