Wastegate Actuator Rattle Fix

Saw a new TSB on hmaservice.com and momentarily thought that they figured out a fix for the annoying rattle the waste gate actuator rod produces in a certain RPM range. Unfortunately, it's only an adjustment to prevent a warning light coming on so the rattle noise continues for now...

i wouldnt go as far as not buying another hyundai because the value for what you get is hard to beat but you'd figure with something this small that they would issue an easy fix. or rework the stock unit to where is doesnt do that. if anything ill just go aftermarket when one becomes up, if it hasnt already. problem solved and aftermarket ones are better anyways.

I'm also very surprised this hasn't happened already in the aftermarket. Hyundai is lagging pretty bad on what seems to be a pretty easy fix. I'm surprised nameless hasn't commented on this at all, I wonder if its an issue on the optima's also?

nameless has a bov. i seen the video for it today on youtube. it was a combo pack with the charge pipe or intake and bov. i cant remember which. i keep hearing they have all this stuff but cant seem to find it anywhere. im sure its an issue with them as well considering its the same motor and turbo and all that.

i see you're a fellow former speed owner as well. i miss mine lol

I had speed3 as well with cpe dp, cobb tuner, devels own progressive methanol injection, cpe nano intake running 13.4 at 107.5 mph. It was fun car but I have to say the hyundai is 8/10 of performance with 12/10 amenities and comfort. I had true red with oz wheels the car always got comments but so does my hyundai its funny. As far as the acutator noise during startup is a minor problem the speeds had smoking turbos and horrible soot at the muffler.

i feel ya there. i like the mix of performance and amenities that the sonata provides. its on a whole other level of refinement than the speed was. i had an 07 as well but in silver. i had kw v2 coilovers, spc camber links, shinka rx-8's, ebc slotted rotors, ceramic pads, aem intake, magnaflow exhaust and tint. just little aesthetic mods. i thought the car was pretty quick as it was. i wanted more speedy mods but it was also my family car so i couldnt go too crazy with it. but yeah the smoking turbo and horrible soot issue and the back brakes with crappy calipers and brake dust from **** it was little issues that drove me crazy lol.

oh and i cant forget the horrible gas mileage. thats what i love about the sonata is that it has more power and is overall a nicer car with considerably better gas mileage. i get more compliments from the sonata though than i did with the speed. everyone knew what that was and people are just now figuring out what the new sonata is. plus this car is more of a sleeper and once the aftermarket world takes off with this car, i think it will be even better.

What is the TSB number? I only see 11-EM-001, which does not address the rattle. It is titled "EXHAUST WASTE GATE ACTUATOR (EWGA) INSPECTION AND ADJUSTMENT" and olny covers issues with the malfunction indicator light coming on due to an unadjusted waste gate actuator. Is there another that I'm missing?

We have a tentative solution for this already. We are making sure it actually works. Our solution is very easy to install if it ends up working...

How many people want this?
Id definitely be interested in hearing more about the fix and if the price is right I'd be game.

I actually have some good news in regards to this issue. The friend who helped me get the car I wanted works in Management at the Alabama plant. I spoke to him regarding this problem, he checked with his coworker in Quality Control, who confirmed its a known issue, and a fix is planned to take place at the end of September.

So I just wanted to pass that along to you guys, that Hyundai hasn't forgotten about us and is working on getting the issue resolved.

This is good news.

It's hard to make a change on a car under development, harder to make a change while in production, but it's really hard to change something on thousands of cars that have already shipped. Just coming up with the fix is half the problem, then you have to train techs on how to perform the fix, ship parts, etc.

I wish they would let us know what they are working on, that way we would have some peace of mind. Unfortunately, I think if they did 'admit' that there were issues, even if they were working on them, it could cause problems with new car sales.

And if Hyundai doesn't fix it, +1 me to the fix Nameless is looking at :)

Mine had the noise for a little while and it is annoying. The problem is that it could affect resale. If a perspective buyer heard the buzzing, either during cold startup or on the road between 1500-2500rpm then that will definitely raise a flag. I know I would question it if I was buying a used car and heard buzzing from the turbo.

I'm a manufacturing engineer. I understand tolerances when assembling parts. That being said I hope they figure it out before people start trading these things in.

Hearing a buzzing noise from the turbo of a new car didn't bother you though?

I'd be happy if Hyundai came up with a fix under warranty for it, but if they didn't it really wouldn't bother me.
I don't hear it once the engine/turbo is up to normal operating temperature.

I WANT IT NOW!!!!!! It is hard to get people to understand why a new great looking car sounds like its falling apart when you crank it up!
