Hey guys do any of that have the cargo crossbars installed have any kind of vibration or humming?
I just got a 2011 SF AWD 3.5 and I was babying it until I got atleast 500 miles before I went on the highway at speeds above 55 or 60 mph and when I did I noticed a humming or vibration just before 65 and then it dissapears right after 65. I thought it was the the front tires so I got up to 65 and popped into Neutral and the sound was still there, but it's only there for a slpit second, so I thought maybe the crossbars had something to do with it. I really can 't get a feel for what it is yet. It sounds like it's in the front but I'm just not sure.

Thanks Bob!

If it's was wheel balance, putting it into neutral would not change anything, it would still vibrate. If it was front wheel balance, you would more than likely feel it in the steering wheel. Not so for a the rear wheels. You could always mount the rear wheels in the front and see if you now feel the vibration in the steering wheel.

I do not have the crossbars on mine so I can't comment on that part.

Do you have a hood wind deflector installed? If so, that could be the cause if it's not installed properly and a more likely cause than the crossbars I would think.

I have the same issue with my 2011. I have 2200 miles so far but ive heard this humming from day one when speeds reach 50mph'ish. like you, the noise goes away aftter 65mph give or take a few.

I believe it may be the tires. I have the bridgestone duellers. what do you have?

The other possible cause im leaning towards is driveline vibration. Ive experienced these symptoms in other cars before and it was always driveline vibration. Basically, the rpms are very low at that given speed causing a drone type noise.

There was a tsb issued on my other car where they installed a dynamic damper under the car that attached to the area that was causing the vibration. The damper was basically a rubber block that absorbed the vibration.

I called the dealer ,the service advisor said may just be a unbalanced tire, so it goes tomorrow for the verdict. Stay Tuned.

Thanks Bob!
Just a hint from way back .. the OEM tires don't always tell the truth on a typical balancing machine. Hyundai even recommends use of the Hunter GSP9700 when a dealer runs into issues like this. It actually adds a load to the tire as it rotates.

Hey guys here's latest , took the SF to ht edealer this morning and the service advisor called me in about 2 hrs. said due to the weather conditions he wouldn't be able to road test the SF at his ,but for a shot in the dark he rebalanced all 4 tires. I went to pick up the SF took it on the highway myself same thing still happening , so I went bak to the dealer and the guy said he would take one of his techs out to test drive came back said that needed to put back on the lift to listen to it with a stethescope. Short time later the tech called into the service bay and told me that it's the transfer case for the rear of vehicle some kind of chain inside is rattling. The service advisor told that they needed 2 or 3 days to order a new part, I told that I was very upset for this to be happening with only 707 miles. I really felt like leaving it there and walking away, very frustrated. So there you have it. As always stay tuned I 'm afraid this isn't over yet!

Thanks Bob!

Hey guys hre's the latest ,the dealer received the tranfer case and installed and test drove and still same humming & vibration. The servie advisor told me that they needed to contact hyundai tech support for asiststance to diagnose the issue ,they told them to take the transfer case off and run it without to see what they would find, low and behold now it's the transmission it's self. they told me it's the pinion bearing and that the whole trans needs to be replaced, but hyundai's rule is that if a vehicle has more that 500 miles on they put in rebuild trans and that's when I raised **** and told them that I didn't buy a brand new vehicle with only 707 miles to have used parts put in it ,so the service advisor tld me that he would see what he could about getting a new one, haven't heard back yet.The other thing is that they gave a loaner b/c I told that could be without a vehicle for 7-10 days until they get this repair completed and when I told them that I needed to go out of state they told that hyundai loaner vehicles aren't allowed to leave the state in which their registered which really made **** b/c I have an aunt that's very ill in a nursing home and I can't use the loaner to go see her ,so their looking into that also. As I said in my previous post I don't think this over yet. If they don't get it right I'm going to give a taste of our state lemon law. 3 Strikes you're out, we're at strike 2,I like the vehicle over all but I'm not going to deal with agravation on a daily basis. Thanks for listening to me vent. Stay tuned

Thanks Bob!

I too heard a thrumming sound that I thought was coming from the cross bars on my new 2007 Santa fe. I noticed the factory sets them together at the back, so I moved one up to the front, and the noise went away.

I never use my cross bars, so I am thinking of removing them. There might even be an MPG advantage.

As mentioned in my previous the has confirmed for now that the noise in question is the pinion bearing in the trans, butI ask about and tried moving the crossbars around , they told me the best position for them is both to the rear. But when warmer weather comes I think I'm going take mine off too if I they get this issue fixed will decide if I keep it.

Thanks for your input Bob!

They've had it 11 days and I 've only owned 49 days WOW!!

Bob it is not any of those things your stupid dealer is trying to butter you up with. I had the same issue and my dealer explained it is the TRANSMISSION changing gears around (120KM in Canada about 70M in US). How they explain is that it basically is changing to high speed. So below no issue above no issue. I have now driven 24,000 Kms (15,000 miles) and I still do have some issues when I exceed 120 (but I do not exceed on a daily basis as it is against the laws anyways). For the 2010 model they made changes to the transmission (from 2009 model) for fuel efficiency etc. So likely it is a design issue which carried over into the 2011 model. They are reworking the model for 2012 and I will bet they will fix those issues.

I thought it was something to do with the ECO system which does not kick in until it is 120 or below - so all sorts of issues at 120KM and higher.

Another issue you may find is that when starting up from parked position it may lurch forward a bit (happened frequently in the early days of ownership not too much now).
I am sure that most SF owners would have noticed the same thing with the 3.5 L engine.
These issues have to be transmission related but it is not that anything is wrong with it or anything - at least I hope so. I am now into my first year of ownership.
I also have some issues with their tires in winter (See Kumho OEM winter driving)
