Does your Sonata vibrate when applying brakes

Hey everyone - So my 20 Sonata had just under 12k miles last year when I took it to the dealer with vibrating problems. After fighting with them, they replaced the front rotors under warranty and after they followed Hyundai guidance on practically shaving them down and experiencing the same issue. Well almost a year later and 6k miles more its happening again. I took it there again, and they found "spots" on all 4 rotors on the inside. Has anyone else seen this before??

They are telling me its from an "outside source" but cannot tell me what would cause only the inside of the rotors to develop the same spots. Honestly, I think this was there before, but the technician was too lazy to do a full review and now that its the second time I took it in and they don't want to fix it looked at it more extensively. They are refusing to do anything but want to charge me $1000 to replace the rotors but won't guarantee me it won't happen again.

Does anyone else have brake issues on the 20-23 Sonata and what was the cause? I am debating filing a case with NHTSA.

Other question, if you anyone replaced all 4 rotors and pads, what did you use and would you recommend them? Has anyone ever heard of Detroit Axle?

I had this issue with my 2020 Limited. Started well under 10k miles and lasted up until I got rid of it at ~65k miles. Several others on the forum have had the same issue. I think someone said that there is a potential flaw in the calipers that causes the pads to stick, stay in contact with the rotors, and warp them. I'm not sure if that's truly the case though, can't find the post. I never took the car in for this issue and just dealt with it (not a good idea lol).

If this is common issue, it means the OEM rotor metal is very soft and it deforms when the wheel lugs are torqued down. The reason for soft metal is so owners replace them more often, Hyundai makes money. May want to replace them with quality aftermarket if available, and torque yourself the wheel lugs in 4-5 steps by hand, without impact

I had this issue creep up around 15k, replaced with the below rotors and no vibrations anymore. Did the back as well just because it was in the air.

After my daughter complained about vibration when braking, I saw on a Volvo forum that seemed to place the blame on uneven rotor deposits left by ceramic pads. The theory I believe is the deposits have a different coefficient of friction than the bare rotors. The solution was to use semi metallic pads. My former Equinox vibrated severely when descending mountains , as the brakes heated up and I suspect this was the cause there also.

Interesting!

yeah they are trying to blame it on the way I drive “ they are labelling that I’m racing the car” which I’m not and especially the most recent time… 300kms after getting new rotors, then the issue arise. Like why would anyone hammer on new rotors like that in the first place? But it’s been an ongoing issue and struggle. The service manager said that road vibration is causing the steering wheel to shake when brakes are applied. But he also mentioned that the rotors are also warped. I’m not sure what the **** is going on but they are definitely incompetent.

I remember seeing somewhere on the site about the metallurgy of the rotors being soft. Can't recall what year or specific model it referred to though. I'd be looking for an aftermarket rotor that is either slotted and/or cross drilled so it can vent gases from the brake pad contact surfaces and dissipate heat. Ceramic pads are hard on rotors. Good for minimal pad dust and pad longetivity. I'd be using metal composite pads.

As others may have stated, when I inquired at my local dealership about replacing rotors and brakes under warranty I was told they are not covered.
Just as well...I suppose now I can get much better rotors and brakes for the vehicle.

I've replaced all my rotors on my 22. My fronts are already vibrating bad.
