Transmission Issues

I dont know if anyone has experienced this...

I know a few ppl on here have stated that they are having problems with the transmission shifting hard or incorrectly.

My problem is that sometimes ill turn on the car and the blue light for the P by the shift knob isnt blue.

So i try to put the car in reverse and the R doesnt turn red.. all the letters stay white. it will reverse about a foot and then a loud CLUNK!

So I throw back in park, and I have to turn off the car and turn it back on for the transmission to fall into place or something....

it's really weird...the car doesnt hesitate to shift while driving nor does it shift harshly.

This doesnt happen everyday, but at least once or twice a week. I dont understand why.. I understand theres alot of electrical components going on under the hood, but I dont know why Ive been having this issue for almost a month now..

Anyone else have this issue, and if so, what have you done about it?

A month?! Wow... Take it in to your dealer and get it fixed! You have a warranty for a reason!
If you can't get in there for a while then try to take a video of it. If it's happening at least once/week just pull out the ol' camera phone and start a video before you even put the key in the ignition. Since it won't happen every time, when you take it to the dealer they might just tell you there is nothing wrong (which at the time will be true if they cannot replicate it and there is no noted history). At least you'll have the video of it happening and you can show them. They might tell you to wait until it's worse and happens all the time. Worst case scenario you can take it to the top of the food chain and you'll have video evidence of the problem with a date stamp on the files.

didn't have the issue...but, there is a TSB that the dealers are performing. i can't remember exactly what it's called...but they change out something in the transmission - (not physically inside of it)...they did mine last time i was in for LOF, alignment. didn't seem to take that long....

but, you should get it into the dealer quickly.

Sounds like the range switch issue. There is a TSB for the Sonatas (along with about 2/3 of the Hyundai line since 2011) that addresses this issue. You can also find a couple threads on the forum about this. When acting as you describe, it should store a code in the computer which your service department can pull. They should know what to do once they see the code.

99% Sure THIS is you in above Link.
TSB 12-01-021: Description: Some Tucson (LM) and Sonata (YF) vehicles may experience a mild shock when shifting into Drive or Reverse. The condition may be accompanied by DTC P0705, Transmission Range Sensor Circuit. This bulletin describes the procedure to install the Inhibitor Switch Bracket.

Do NOT fail to have it Chk'd for the Error Code; I was told a by-product of this issue is "car CAN become UN-driveable".

Surely Your car should show a Code BUT MINE had to be read Twice (2 Svc visits) B4 the Code showed-up. Same Switch Replaced and all is well.
My Gear Shift Indicator Window (P, R, D, etc) in the Speedometer went BLANK , too, with less Tranny roughness than others describe - still the same thing.

Which dealer you going to go to? Doral Hyundai gets busy, getting there an hour before the doors open improves your odds of getting in and out. Saturday they had Hyundai cars from various dealers showing up. Saturday they only had 2 Diagnostic Techs and 3 Oil service mechanics.

Call the dealer you are going to go to and schedule an appointment.

titaniumskull, I would die if I had to take my car to Doral Hyundai...I would take it to Hyundai by the Palmetto and Nw 67 Ave. 1 mile away from my house. As long as I show up early there im good to go, and btw I think Id make an appointment first considering my last trip to the dealer lol.

Craigos26 Ive printed out the TSB sheet that describes the issue and what needs to be replaced. Thank you for the useful help. Ill be taking care of this soon!

Well, it seems some things like to happen all around in groups.

Mine had the problem with the "R" not lighting up with no clunking issues a year ago. Hasn't been back till today. I took a video of it and did the video showing how the R didn't light up but the LCD had no problem and then turned the engine off with key in acc position and the R lit up. Then started the car and the R went white again. I don't have any codes but I have videos. Hopefully they can fix it this time.

Ally. Have you already got yours into the shop? What did they tell you?

It took about 3 weeks between My FIRST [Blank Gear-Indicator Window/slightly rough Trans feel / No Code Found] and the 2nd occurrence (Code Found).

Hopefully, your issue reoccurs soon and I think the code will be P0705. Good Luck!
