Stronger rear springs!

Were on our 3rd Santa Fe (09, 13, 17). All have been 3rd row/LWB variants. With each one ive noticed the rear suspension lacks when it comes to aupporting any sort of load. Were not talking about overloading here either. Just Filling the car with the amount of people its advertised to handle.

Ive only come across 2 solutions. Firestone airbags, and sumo springs/coil spring spacers. Neither really excited me.

I researched, compared, emailed and came up with what seems a legitimate solution. Hyundai Veracruz rear springs! Per Hyundai specs, the comparable springs (AWD model) were around 0.5 inches taller. The GVWR for the veracruz is about 500 lbs more so common sense tells me the springs would be stiffer, albeit slightly.

I emailed Hyundai. After 3 weeks of no response i called and was told to contact my local dealer for spring rate info. Yeah. I work for the local dealer . Hyundai doesnt publish speing rates.

So i pulled the trigger, and figured at worst i gotta eat the restock fee.

They work. Pictures to follow shortly.

There is a definate improvement in how it rides, and currently it sits 1.5 inches higher in the rear. I do expect it to settle in at around an inch over stock. More reviews to come once we get it loaded up a bit. I dont expect it to be perfect, but its gotta be better.

I used that site also hyundaipartsdeal.com what i liked most was the customer service i called and they had real people to talk to about my order and they were factory O.E. parts. also some car dealers are nuts when it comes to mods or aftermarket parts, i worked a Honda dealer that was lucky to have a DSM that said go ahead and do the warranty unless the parts caused the problem we had lots of customers come in because of that.

My 2017 SantaFe Limited Ultimate obviously has the same weak rear suspension. Took it back to the dealer, only to realize I knew much more about suspension than they did (go figure).

So, since these Vera Cruz rear springs seem to be the answer, does anyone have the correct part numbers to order them by?

Also, since these springs are a higher rate, did anyone also change out the factory rear shocks for some heavier duty gas shocks?

Thanks!!!

Hey guys, same question as GTP.... anyone tried upgrading the Santa Fe front springs with the Veracruz taller units?

Will be changing out my rear springs, but if the fronts from the Veracruz offer any better load capacity, I'm all for it. That is, if the front springs fit.

I was riding behind another LWB 17 Santa Fe today with at least 4 passengers and the rear tires were badly toed in from the weight. Additionally the rear was bouncing up and down something terrible on the highway.

I guess since I'm almost always a solo driver or win my wife only I never noticed how bad the rear setup was until today.

Just pulled the trigger on these. I paid $175.58 from Hyundai Parts Deal. We (my wife and I and our 3 teenage daughters) take several trips a year with the ol' SF Limited (2015) and I have a aluminum hitch mount cargo rack with a Husky weatherproof, lockable box mounted to the rack, it comfortably fits 5 carry-on sized suitcases and plenty of other misc stuff, but man, the SF sags like crazy with that box loaded up. I weighed it and fully loaded it is 226 lbs, so I bet rolling at 75mph, and I hit a bump that 226 turns into 300+. As y'all know, you can't fit hardly anything with a fully loaded 3rd row up in the SF, so the box is a must for road trips. I even have to take my Curt hitch off when not using to help the rear suspension issue. I had those firestone ride rite air bags, but that was a bad experience, 10 miles after the trip started and one of the valves on the top of the bag broke. The bag somehow shifted position slightly and that's what broke it. I've been looking for a better, permanent solution ever since then. Hopefully the springs will get here by the weekend, and I'll be able to get them on and start enjoying them. We are taking a trip in March, so this is perfect timing! Thank you OP!

Not yet CoZo6, I was on call last weekend, the last thing I wanted is to have one side done, then I have to go leaving her stranded. I plan to attack it this weekend after the new shrubs go in and the new garage door opener is installed. :| I need to get them done soon though, we are planning a small road trip for spring break, and I would like to have them broken in a bit before a long loaded trip. I'll post up some pics when I get it done.

Well, I just got done with both sides and am not happy at all with the results. Either my 2014 had HD springs, or something. The Veracruz springs are in fact .5" taller, however the diameter of the spring itself is smaller than my stockers. My stock springs were much heavier as well. I didn't weigh both of them, but I bet my stock ones are 3 lbs heavier per spring than the Veracruz ones. I am not sure what I am going to do from here, I'm tempted to get the AWD ones, but if they are the same, then I still have a problem. Thinking of going with some air shocks maybe. This is frustrating.

The only thing I can think of what happened is the difference between the 2wd and AWD springs. I got the springs 55330-3J100 (2wd) I am wondering if the AWD ones would be thicker than the 2wd version.

The pictures show the thickness of the Veracruz (on the left) is less than my stock springs.

any colored stamps on the springs? service manual shows a yellow-orange spring comes in about 1/2" shorter than the awd spring. manual actually shows 4 different springs, depending on the suspension setup, but I only remember having 2 options (fwd, awd) when ordering.

unfortunate that it doesn't appear to only be smaller, but as you've experienced not as strong either. I'll remove the 2wd part number from my initial post to prevent any future occurances (won't allow it...mods help?). maybe contact your selling dealer and see of they can return/exchange them?

The color stamp is yellow-orange, then white on the next ring down. I ordered from Hyundai Parts Deal, I have already initiated an RMA, we'll see if they allow it. It's been almost 20 days. There were only 2 options when I ordered, the FWD and the AWD. I am thinking/hoping it has to be the difference of models regarding the size/diameter. I am curious if anyone else has done the FWD springs or if everyone has the AWD versions. I'm not going to give up, I desperately need help in the rear as I have 3 kids and we pull a small trailer from time to time.

Sorry about the orientation of the pictures, they are right on my desktop, can't figure out why they are going landscape on the site. You can see how much taller the Veracruz ones are, they are just smaller in diameter which killed me in support.

jsv, is there any way you could stick a micrometer on your springs to see what the diameter is? I haven't done mine yet because I don't have one. But I will be getting one later today.

I too am concerned initially having read this.... I just recently purchased a brand new "year and a half old" 2016 FWD lwb xl ultimate as a family grocery getter / hauler, and have later read a few reviews about the handling characteristics and wonder if this is in direct correlation to this issue. This is my first Hyundai, and I thought that I did my research... Looking forward to getting some concrete answers from you guys in reference to this issue on the fwd model... Is it just possible to put the AWD spring on the FWD model? And if possible, would it just create an OutRaGeous rake to this beauty?

Either way, Realizing that mine is still new, and not fully subject to this full issue perhaps yet, I still would like to know the solution before encountering it!

jsvob03 : did this appear to resolve any "body roll" and improve handling characteristics ?

Thmaxxer - sorry, they're on the car, can't get a mic on them currently. For reference I will try to remember to do this at the next oil change.

Spring styles are the same, can be reasonably assumed that they are interchangeable, results may vary as we've seen. I 'think' the springs would do fine on a 2wd.

Danger - Definate improvement all around. seems to turn in a bit quicker, and feels more planted.

I'll be doing my springs next week while wife is out of state. I measured the springs as best I could with a steel and tape measure. The height (eyeballed) is 12.5 inches. The diameter is 39/64th, which works out to be 15.4781 mm. Here's a few pictures that might help. I'll try and post pictures during the install. I'm thinking about using the standard jack at the rear jacking point to raise the wheel, and the hydraulic jack to ease tension on the lower bolt to r&r and install the spring. You will note the paint scribes on the new springs are blue and yellow.

CoZo6, if your measurements are correct, your new springs are smaller diameter than my stock springs, maybe yours being an AWD will have different diameter. The Veracruz springs I got (which may have been the self leveling ones looking at my paint colors) are 13.843mm in diameter. My stock 2wd springs are 16.332mm in diameter. In jsvob03's initial post, his pics show a noticeable difference in diameter between the 2, with the Veracruz being the larger spring, in diameter and height.

CoZo6, can you post a picture when you get your old springs out, like a side by side shot like jsvob03 did? I'm trying to determine if the AWD and FWD springs are different diameter on the stock SF. I may just go with the AWD SF springs with them being almost an inch taller than the 2wd ones.

I just got my SF back form the dealer for this issue, and they say everything is fine, so I will be looking at beefing up the rear end.

I am a little concerned that one poster has found the Vera Cruz springs were lighter, hopefully it was a wrong part # and it works out for him

Bummer CoZo6 that the job is going to go out further. I'm beginning to wonder if the stock FWD SF springs are bigger in diameter than the Veracruz ones. I'm waiting for the OP to mic his stock AWD SF springs.

spinalator, is your SF AWD or FWD? If it's AWD you should be fine. If its FWD, you may be in the same boat i'm in.

I think those are the ones I may have received, I used part number 55330-3J100, but if you look at my pictures on post #48, the color codes on the springs match the self level 2WD spring. Don't order those, they are smaller in diameter than my stock SF springs by a good bit. After I installed the new springs mine sat LOWER than before with the stock springs. Now I will be hit for 20% restocking fee. I am currently waiting for some mic measurements of diameters of AWD stock SF springs before I order any others.
