Stop USB Powering ON

Hi all,

I have a 2022 Tucson that has a 10.25" screen and I recently purchased a Carsifi Wireless AA Adapter. The Adapter works great and my only issue is the USB turning ON or staying ON.

When the car is turned OFF the power remains on the USB for around 5 mins or so which means the car is connected to AA as long as I'm within range. Like when I park the car in the garage. Also the power is applied to the USB port whenever you open a door, so if I go into the garage to get something from the car the Adapter is turned ON, it connects with my phone and stays connected for 5 mins or so. Really bloody annoying.

Yes, I can pull the Adapter out of the USB socket each time I get out of the car, but that really negates the idea of having a Wireless Adapter.

I've tried using Tasker to kill BT, WiFi, AA and Carsifi once the BT connection to the car is disconnected (Car BT not Carsifi BT), and that Task works but something then turns BT & WiFi back on and it's all connected again.

Any thoughts appreciated.

TIA

Yes, but if you are using the Carsifi adapter, all the communications happen between the adapter and the car wirelessly. No need for any data connection if you are using it for wireless CarPlay® or AA.

The Carsifi does have to be plugged into the USB data port. Also, my experience is that the USB power stays on all the time.

I'm currently on vacation, but when I get home I'm planning on buying this little switch and adapters. It will allow me to "turn off" the Carsifi when I get out of the car at home. It's a kluge, but worth it for the overall convenience and neatness of wireless AA. No dangling cables distracting from the elegant center stack. With some creative use of Velcro I hope to hide most everything, including the Carsifi, at the top of the cubby.

Caution: There are other USB switches available, but most don't pass data and most are much longer than 1 foot.

Yep I looked at that switch but thought it was just negating the wireless adapter Presently looking at splicing a tiny relay into the usb cable and wiring it to the ignition on circuit so it's only on when the car is turned running.
There might be a USB plug/socket connection somewhere between the port and the head unit. If so, you might avoid having to cut and splice the USB cable.

I have the Carlinkit in my car. It behaves the same way, staying on for a few minutes after I shutoff the car. The difference is, once the car fully shuts off and Carplay gets disconnected from my phone, I can open the door and everything and it will not reconnect itself.

Another thing. I have the PHEV, if I plug the car in before Carplay disconnects itself, it will remain connected the whole time the car is charging. My work around is to wait a few minutes before plugging in the car, but if I'm in a hurry or don't feel like waiting, I go into the phone setting and turn off Carplay. Does Android have a setting to disable AA? This seems to be your best bet.

Just received this reply from Carsifi:

Hi Greg,

We know about this issue. Some cars powered USB socket when engine off.
We're working on a solution that will monitor the Bluetooth name of your car head unit and turn off the adapter when this Bluetooth name went (usually when the engine is off).
For now, you can try to use the magic button to pause adapter auto connect by triple clicks (How pause/resume Android Auto), in next firmware version you can change the number of clicks.

Best regards,

The intention is to have wireless connection from your phone to the car, so that you do not need to remember to plug your phone in, or remember to unplug when you leave the car. The connection to the phone is automatic when you start the car, and (hopefully, at least for most of these types of devices) automatically disconnect when you turn off the car. Your phone stays in your pocket, briefcase or backpack, coat, or wherever it is.

I contacted Carsifi about this and they asked for my unit's UUID and issued a beta firmware for me to test. I have a long drive to visit family this weekend and will be testing it out. Everyone should note that the new software update for the Tuscon head unit enables wide screen AA, but breaks some functionality for Carsifi so you have to disable the "Intercept AA Protocol" option in the app.

Just received this reply from Carsifi:

We’ve released new firmware v1.8.11 in the beta stage with a new Start/Stop feature. You can set up a Carsifi adapter to work only if your car head unit or another Bluetooth device is connected to your phone. Some cars powered USB sockets when the engine is off. This feature will help to make the experience with the Carsifi adapter and Wireless Android auto better.
How to use:

  1. Please, make sure that you have installed firmware v1.8.11 and up.
  2. Open companion app → Start/Stop features → Start/Stop based on car Bluetooth name → Select your car head unit Bluetooth name from the list and click Save.
  3. Enjoy Wireless Android Auto
This feature is under BETA testing. If you see firmware above v1.8.11, please update your adapter and this feature will be available too.

Then this one:

Also, we will release new firmware 1.9.0 tomorrow for all customers.

I'm not having great luck with Firmware Version 1.9.0. Basically no change. This is what I reported to Carsifi. Is anybody having better luck with the BT Start/Stop?

Location: U.S.
Vehicle: 2022 Hyundai Tucson Limited (USB port stays powered on when car is turned off. Bluetooth device “Tucson” shuts down when car is turned off.)
Phone: Samsung Galaxy S21 (Qualcomm chipset), Android 12, fully patched
Carsifi: Firmware Version 1.9.0, Start/Stop configured to monitor “Tucson”, Improve First Connect-On, Intercept AA Protocol-Off (necessary to avoid Communication Error 8), Auto USB Mode Detect-Off, USB Connection Mode-Default
Android Auto: Start Android Auto Automatically-Always

Wi-Fi connection to Carsifi does not drop when BT device “Tucson” shuts down. Connection only drops when I walk away from the car.

Wi-Fi connection to Carsifi is reestablished when I come back to (or close to) the car. This knocks me off of my home Wi-Fi network.

I have the same problem as my phone seems to go nuts connecting/disconnecting for a few minutes until the USB port powers off. I stopped using the Carsifi as Waze generates a white screen too often and I can’t play Amazon music, Spotify or Sirius. I don’t have any issues when my phone is connected with a USB cable.

An alternative that I've been thinking about is using a dual port USB switch. This would allow me two things:
1. I don't need to unplug my carsify adapter, but just click a button to 'turn it off' (ie switch the active usb port)
2. The switch allows me (Android) and wife's (iOS) cables to be plugged in at all times.

Otherwise, you can just get a USB with a toggle on/off switch.

Information I just sent to Carsifi:

After upgrading to 1.9 my phone only connects to Android Auto around half the time when I get in the car and start it up. The phone is connected to the Carsifi Wi-Fi network, but not Android Auto.

Some additional information.

It appears that the USB port on the Hyundai Tucson may, in fact, power down when the car is turned off.

If I approach the car with my phone……but without the key fob in my pocket…….the LED on the Carsifi dongle does not light up and my phone remains connected to my home Wi-Fi network.

If, however, I approach the car with the key fob in my pocket, and even if I don’t unlock the car, the green LED on the Carsifi dongle flashes and my phone connects to the Carsifi Wi-Fi network (but not Android Auto).

The timing of this partial reconnection, possibly interacting with how quickly (or slowly) I get in and turn on the car (and Bluetooth), might be what is glitching the full connection to Android Auto.

Good call I think that too from your description. Once it connects to the car Wifi and can't go any further to connect to Bluetooth and then AA, starting car doesn't change that when the Bluetooth comes on. But if both Wifi and Bluetooth are available in about the same time AA connects.

You might be on to something. It powers up but the head unit is not booted and powered up yet. Ego, the handshake fails. Try to unplug the Carsifi while the car is running and go through the procedure from scratch. If it works, then you've found the discrepancy they need to address.

Shame the bluetooth and electronics do not turn off once you exit the car by opening the drivers door. Simple if you want it on to turn on the accessories.

I too don't care for Android Auto trying to connect all the time and having to jump thru hoops to stop it is not a positive reason to stay with the brand.

No, I am not going to pay a subscription for cloud based navigation.

If I do go thru hoops I will disable the cell capabilities when my free term expires next year. At least it will isolate my location and data so that cannot be sold.
