How do i find out if I have a steady bearing? seriously never heard of that.

 

Its part of the drive shaft.

 

ok thanks at least I know I have to get under there to check. I will be changing oil soon and will give it some attention. I guess mines has been ok since i had no idea what it was.

If your age is right, you'll probably remember it with a different name. Alternately called "CV joint" (back before we had FWD, it was the only place you'd find one on a vehicle!) or "carrier bearing".

 

Oh the thing that holds up long drive shafts. Buses and trucks have those to. I never had one on my cars.

as for the age I am high school class of 75 you do the math.

I had CV joints in the driveshafts of a couple of my older GM vehicles (e.g., my old '64 Buick Wildcat). I date back another 4 years.

 

Is this the same part that HMAService calls the center bearing?

HMAService calls for the replacement of the whole propeller shaft, is this accurate?

When replacing the propeller shaft, do I need to drain/fill any fluids (ie. differential fluid)?

I've not hear of a 'steady bearing' anywhere but in this thread. What dhuang refers to is the 'carrier bearing' aka 'CV joint' between the two 'halves' of the driveshaft that will only exist on AWD Santa Fe models where power is being directed to the rear. Seems that for reasons unknown, different manufacturers have to make up their own names for this part. Hyundai calls this the 'center bearing'.

Yes, Hyundai replaces the entire drive shaft assembly if there's too much play or noise in the bearing.

No fluids are touched in the replacement process.

For the 'center bearing': droning noises, clunking on stop/start, and significant vibration with specific speed ranges are all reported.

The reason i enquired because he referred to it as a 'Driveshaft' not a propeller shaft.
Propeller shaft will have a centre support bearing about half way along length of vehicle where as the right front driveshaft has a support bearing supporting the driveshaft via a bearing assemlby bolted onto cylinder block.
The driveshaft on the right front has a short length of shaft, then a support bearing then has an inner and outer cv joint between support bearing and hub assembly.
it doesnt look like he's posted anything since spring so i doubt we will hear from him.

Transverse engines have just confused the terminology a bit.

Anyway, we're talking about the piece that heads aft and powers the rear wheels.

 

Sounds like it might be related to this.

I've taken my '10 SE to the dealer twice and they've been unable to replicate the noise. But it only really happens when it's cold so in the next couple of months I plan on leaving it there overnight. The head service writer even admitted it's a problem on this rig.

 

Thanks Upthewazzu, it does sound very similar to the description in the other thread. Will be paying special attention this location as well as the inner shaft bearing bracket assembly when I get the car up in the air.

 

Wow I'm really disappointed!! I went looking for the propeller at the end of my propeller shaft and guess what, I found a differential.
Are propellers an option?? How does this puppy float?

 

Strictly an option on the 3rd row version of the Limited. I'm sure you've seen them and didn't realize what they were. Lots of people mistake them for hitch ornaments.

 

A ha. So what looks like a hitch is really the output port of a jet boat. Sneaky!

 

I believe a traditional drive shaft has a fixed length.

A propeller shaft is a shaft within a shaft that can change its overall length; it often has a grease fitting at the sliding section.

No kitty hawk flight ability implied ; but not a 1920's fixed driveshaft either.
