Speedomter is 3 MPH slow. Is this normal?

My Sonata 2.0T speedometer is 3-4 MPH slow.

Granted I am basing this data off my GPS but in my CIVIC my GPS speed and speedometer speed match perfectly.

Is this a known issue?

Thanks!

I have a couple of road speed displays I pass by sometimes, and I always get about 3 KM/h less on there than my speedometer. I figure if the road display is accurate, I'm not actually going as fast as I think sometimes and it'll help me avoid tickets! :) The same holds true for my Kia Rio5, but I get about 5 KM/h less with that!

You're not alone; mine is the same. The first time I noticed was when cruising down the highway and reseting the average speed on the dash display. It said I was going 2 mph slower than what the speedo said.

Ditto. Have had the issue since I bought mine.

I actually like it because I feel like I am speeding but really I'm just doing the speed limit or slightly above.

Also its nice when you go past your friendly law enforcement representative...and they continue to sit there or nab someone else!

What your vehicle shows and gps is always going to be different. Simply the vehicles speed is read off of the speed sensors on the wheels, where as GPS is satellite based so latency and other obstructions will cause a small difference in the readings. Also keep in mind that the gps signal is not calibrated for your vehicle where as the sensors on your vehicle are.

I'm sorry but the speedometer in each vehicle is not "calibrated" for your individual vehicle. A group of parts is thrown together and the outcome will vary some because of manufacturing "tollerances".

The GPS, OTOH, is measuring absolute speed. In general, it will be more accurate than the approximation that the speedometer makes.

And sometimes they will come up with the same readings.

I had this issue on 2015 sante fe. Corrected it by changing from 235 x 65 x 17 tyres to 255 x65 x17 tyres. Do be aware it will leave your tyres closer to chassis. Check 1st.
There are tyre size comparison websites to check speed difference

Little late to this party; but my 2013 Sonata 2.0T has always been approx 1mph to 1.5mph off.

Suppose id rather the speedo be SLOW than showing 1mph too fast....o_O
